Westminstenders: The Slow No

Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

Rory Stewart: "If Boris Johnson gets a deal, my political career is over'

Rory Stewart: "I am running as an independent candidate for Mayor of London"

Perfectly reasonable as it’s clear BJ won’t get his deal!

BestIsWest · 04/10/2019 12:40

Why stand in London though? It seems completely the wrong thing for him.

Bodoni · 04/10/2019 12:42

Well, Trump will be pleased if Rory Stewart takes out Sadiq Khan. Why would he want to do that?

DGRossetti · 04/10/2019 12:42

It's not essential, but as a Londoner (admitted "ex" Sad) there's a slight preference for a Londoner Mayor. To the extent that my DM (who hated Ken Livingstone) still voted for him over the other candidates for that very reason. (She still was a massive "Fares Fair" supporter from the 80s).

By the same token, my preference for a Birmingham Mayor would have been someone who was passionate about the area - which tends to be a local (Carl Chinn would have got my vote had he stood).

Pretty certain Sadiq Kahns appeal comes in part from being a Londoner.

BestIsWest · 04/10/2019 12:43

Ah ok lakequeen, thanks for clearing that up.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/10/2019 12:46

At least one LDem MP publicly stated he would prefer No Deal to Corbyn as PM
I don't know how many other LDems believe this, but just haven't said it

The problem with anyone else as PM is that Labour have 247 of the 321+ MPs needed
The LDems have 18 MPs
The expelled Tories have 22 MPs

Pointless trying to push anyone that Labour don't want,
e.g. former Tories who served as ministers and pushed through legislation against unions, cut benefits etc
or a Labour MP who would boost the chances of the left or right faction taking over when Corbyn steps down

A 100% neutral MP might just be acceptable to almost all the Rebel Alliance,
but that basically restricts us to Lady Hermon, who would be a v unusual choice (even though she was my suggestion ! )

As for blame:
Brexit is a rightwing Tory project throughout

I blame Corbyn for not campaigning enthusiatically for Remain during the referendum
and for being a dim and ineffective opposition leader

BUT
none of his faults would matter wrt Brexit if the Tories hadn't decided on / stumbled into (Cameron) Brexshit

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/10/2019 12:50

I don’t believe they’ve ever said categorically they wouldn’t support JC as temp PM “even at a minute to midnight on 30th October

Lib Dem Mp Jamie Stone is asked “No Deal Brexit or Jeremy Corbyn as PM”

He Replies “No Deal Every Time”

umm, you sure oakenbeach?, please tell me the nuance of a party that wants to ignore 17.4 million people, pretends they cant understand the Labours Brexit position, a position that seems to be only misunderstood my BBC 'journalists Tory MP's and LibDem MP's, a party that, whole heartedly in the case of Swinson, backed the policies that brought us here but now wont support one of the only things that could stop a No Deal Brexit

MockersthefeMANist · 04/10/2019 12:56

It is essential to be a Londoner to be Mayor. A Londoner can come from anywhere. Most come from somewhere else, or have a parent who did. What matters is where you call home, and where you mean when you say "Town."

If you came to my area Mockers how long do you think it would take you to come to understand the people and the struggles they face, I live in a small welsh village?

Ah, so we're not 'leaving on 31st October do or die' then? Now there's a surprise...

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/10/2019 13:00

If that is in fact true I'm guessing VONC before the 31st but Id prefer if they hold out till Nov 1st

I was a Londoner for my first Twenty years. I think I know as much about your village as Rory Stewart does about the Peabodys, Grenfells and other estates like the one in Brixton where I lived confined to the flat unable to play outside as a child.

Emilyontmoor · 04/10/2019 13:03

I suspect Sadiq’s centrist remainer stance will keep his remainer base safe. His unpopularity is with the right and left wing Brexiteers, certainly on local forums it is the ones frothing about Brexit that are frothing about Sadiq. Apart from the new money types, though that is not where he is targeting his message of love, hard to see where Rory would appeal, though I am sure he will deeply dent the vote for the official Conservative candidate who has I presume been selected to please the ultra frothers. Basically we now have a right wing and a centrist Tory candidate. Still Boris was not an obvious “popular” winner, but then he could carry off his trick of being all things to all men, not something that works in a capital that is, if anything, even more divided between leavers and remainers than the rest of the country.

JeSuisPoulet · 04/10/2019 13:03

Re vaccines - another mum reminded me that our primary didn't do the nasal vaccines until December last year. This year I've been calling the Dr every week to see if they have it in yet to give it to dd there. So far they haven't had it in and can't say when it will arrive. I'm not sure how it works around the country but maybe some areas do know when they will get it Queen as it sounds as if your school has it booked in already!

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 04/10/2019 13:07

Can I stop worrying I've not completed (or rather have depleted) my brexit stash?

Outsomnia · 04/10/2019 13:09

Any extension should be for minimum two years. Time for the muppets to get their act together and stop the mayhem, misinformation and uncertainty for all.

Did anyone see Bonnie Greer on Question Time last night? I thought she was excellent on the Irish question. Said honest things that dare not be mentioned in the National Media. Varadker is being hammered by the right wing press, but I reckon at this stage he feels it's about time to fight back now. Have a look at Bonnie...

Vaccines - DS had his booked at school for next week and we had a letter last week advising the shipment hasn't arrived and it'll be January at the earliest that they expect to be able to administer them. DM works in a GP surgery and they got 150 vaccines to give to the most vulnerable/in need. They've been told to expect the next load in February

Hoooo · 04/10/2019 13:11

My youngest gets hospital at school but it was november last year!
Might ask at the pharmacy...

Hoooo · 04/10/2019 13:12

Got to make sure dh and ds1 get theirs. They are asthmatic.
Mum had hers a couple of weeks ago.

Emilyontmoor · 04/10/2019 13:13

Justanotherposter If your village is anything like the village I come from then the village will make it as hard as possible for you to understand it. Whereas London is used to absorbing people. The Council block my daughter lived in in Stoke Newington has residents from all over the world who were as friendly and welcoming to a group of middle class young flat mates as to each other. Yes there were drug raids and a stabbing, and a defunct IRA cell, but that would not be to give an accurate reflection of their community.

NEW:
I’m told that the Secretary-General of the EU Council has informed member state delegations that if no new legal text is submitted by the UK before the end of next week,
the focus will then shift to preparing for a no-deal scenario or an extension of a50.

Ellie56 · 04/10/2019 13:19

From the thread "Boris’s Irish solution - is it workable?"

Noone who had a machine gun stuck in their car while taking their kids on holidays would ever agree on a border.
Noone who's friend had their tshirt cut from their body on the street in Belfast because there were orange sleeves would ever want to return to the past.
Noone who didn't go shopping on a Saturday because there might be bombs without warning would think bringing back those tensions would be a good idea.
Noone who was burnt out of their family business in the 70s and forced to move to a refugee camp in the Republic would think Boris has any idea what he's talking about.

The reality is that all those things happened to me or people I know. Because Northern Ireland was a war zone. Because Northern Ireland could easily become one again if borders and checks are returned.

The arrogance of the British government, the idea that Ireland can be some sort of collateral damage, is utterly frightening.
History needs to be learned from and never repeated

The Tory party should be utterly ashamed. Angry
