Is it over yet?

The Tory Party Conference is in full swing in the Manchester Rain, and is proving to be its usual fun.

Johnson is caught up in all sorts of allegations of abuses of power - the non-declaration of his "friendship" to a busty blonde whom was getting a large tax payer grant, and then there the Odey question after his sister said he was under the control of the Hedge Funders.

And thats before we talk about the 40 hospitals, his provocative language and how many times he can say the word surrender.

There is lots of distancing from Lyton Crosby. And accusations that Johnson has gone 'rogue' only listening to the wisdom of Cummings and Symonds.

The Queen apparently has asked for advice as to under what circumstance she can dismiss a PM.

AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A DEAL.

OK, we disagree
No Deal would be a disaster, but that may be a feature, not a bug,
because of Cummings wish to destroy, in order to remake the country

At least, BJ may feel No Deal is his best chance of winning the next GE
Then

I do not think that Civil War will happen. People are either too cocooned, too rich, too lazy, or too stressed trying to provide for their families to have the time or the inclination to engage.

There may be sporadic attempts at civil disruption. But I just don't think it will happen to any disruptive degree.

Unless and until people are individually affected, and find no one cares about their plight, but continue to pursue a failed project for their own ends, that is. That may be the catalyst alright. Eventually, but not immediately.

Let us see what happens at EU summit.

Reading some of the replies to Lewis Goodall's thread about the Awkward Squad's Fringe Meeting (where Grieve, Burt and Gauke talked a lot of realistic sense) was illuminating although sadly not surprising ShockSad

.....talk about shooting the messenger! Confused I couldn't bring myself to read further Sad

RTÉ news tonight - was described as a lead balloon.

KennDodd · 30/09/2019 22:10

With regard civil war, we're forgetting about Scotland. After no deal some people may be willing to resort to violence to demand independence.

I noticed it went downhill surprisingly quickly. One of those where you back out quietly hoping not to catch anyone’s eye...

Interested to read that Farage is starting to use the word 'surrender', so presumably Boris's repetition of it is to counteract the Brexit Party using it about his Brexit effort, whatever it eventually looks like.

I just googled 'Boris bus' but that search is full of the Wrightbus collapse. However, the bus models thing is still above the NHS bus lie in the Google rankings I get.

Peregrina · 30/09/2019 22:31

Customs posts some miles back from the border are 'frictionless' are they, like the er customs posts between London and Manchester? Even if the put the customs post in the middle of Lough Neagh, it will still be a customs post.

Outsomnia · 30/09/2019 22:56

Customs Posts anywhere between ROI and NI will be a magnet for nefarious backlash activity. How daft are some people that thinking of placing them far away from the Border will be an unconditional success!

DUP is actually letting down the people of NI. I cannot believe their doggedness in this regard. But hey, God is on their side, just like the Wright Bus business that donated millions to a church, and now their employees are on the dole.

God means what to them, ruin people's lives no matter what?

Very saddened to think that things might kick off again, but honestly, this gambit from DUP is daft.

boatyardblues · 30/09/2019 23:10

Just watching the Saj on the 11pm news. He reminds me of a comedy character/sketch but I was struggling tonput my finger on it. Then I remembered Mark Heap’s hospital consultant character in Green Wing & that was it!

boatyardblues · 30/09/2019 23:11

It was his speech to conference specifically.

Apileofballyhoo · 30/09/2019 23:12

liberal democracy is obsolete and regard the complete mobilization of society under a totalitarian one-party state as necessary to prepare a nation for armed conflict

I wrote a very sad post earlier and ended nearly crying and not finishing it.

I hadn't forgotten about Scotland, KennDodd and I actually looked up the amount of police in Scotland earlier on this year, and how much of the British Army is stationed there. Assuming the state will have control of all of the army might not be the correct assumption. I studied former Yugoslavia too, at the time.

There's NI too. And countries like Rwanda. I looked that up too, last year. Neighbours slaughtering neighbours.

And when I'm really worried I think about Ireland having food and land and the UK having an army. But I suppose the EU would have to break up first? I'd imagine if it does Putin will be in to Eastern Europe like a shot.

prettybird · 30/09/2019 23:12

The talk of a border "set back" from the actual border - actually two borders Shock - reminded me of what TiP said to me over 3 weeks ago: her dh had met a chap at a conference that day who comes from right near the Irish border. The view there is that the "Loyalists" (DUP) and the "Republicans" (Sinn Fein) both want the hard border back as then their goons will make more money out of smuggling and protectionism.

The "DMZ" (as I've seen someone else describe it, saying "what could possibly go wrong" Hmm) between the two borders would be ideal for such racketeering Sad They'd love it Confused

As TiP finished back then: bring back the UUP and the SDLP, all is forgiven Sad

It's a non-starter anyway as the EU/Ireland are never going to accept it as a viable solution. It's just posturing.

RedToothBrush · 30/09/2019 23:24

Gnu and Boris to ask EU not to give us an extension.

Who is going to work in these border posts and how much danger money will they get?

Outsomnia · 30/09/2019 23:30

Leaving aside the immediate issue of Brexit for a moment, it seems to me that there are absolutely NO consequences for dodgy actions, court rulings etc. by the Leader of our country and many others, anymore.

Sad times. We are powerless really. Well I think so anyway.

Ordinary folk cannot get away with a parking fine.

Keiran Pedley @keiranpedley
THREAD: Published some more numbers from our @IpsosMORI Political Monitor today. Some highlights.

Satisfaction with how the government is running the country

Satisfied 14%
Dissatisfied 81%
Net -67

Since 1977, only Major and May's government's experienced worse ratings...

To illustrate the point... (no giggling at the back)

"The word ‘competent’ is an accurate description of the current government"

Agree 22%
Disagree 66%
Net -44

In April 2015, Cameron's govt scored +6.

Moving on...

Public satisfaction with how Johnson is doing his job as PM

Satisfied 37%
Dissatisfied 55%
Net -18

Net rating is down 11pts from July.

But Corbyn's net rating as Labour leader is -60...

Who do you think would make the most capable PM?

Johnson 50%
Corbyn 29%
Neither 16%
Other / DK etc 4%

"Labour is ready to form the next government"

Agree 27%
Disagree 62%
Neither / DK 11%

In Feb 2015 33% agreed Lab were ready. Went on to lose.

In April 97, 55% agreed Lab were ready. We all know what happened there.

So what have we learned?

In a General Election, Labour will want to make the campaign a referendum on an unpopular government.

But the government will want to make the campaign a referendum on Corbyn and whether Labour is ready....

Whoever cracks that wins

ENDS

Key score here is Johnson net satisfaction. Only one worth watching imo.

We leave the EU at the end of this month.

Unless something happens.

Yep, we are into the 1 month count down.

The UK seriously is suggesting that the solution to the Irish border issue is to create three borders instead of one

OP posts:
yolofish · 01/10/2019 00:19

To lower the tone a bit, I was talking to DD1 (aged 23) today about our current PM today and his apparent irresistibleness to women.

Everything I have ever read does nothing to suggest that he is charming, or funny. He surely cannot be said to be goodlooking. So why do they fall into bed with him?

DD1 said they have low self-esteem; I'm not sure as most of them seem to have pretty good careers (with the exception of Ms Arcuri who is surely as much a shyster as he is). She says having a good career is not a good measure of self-esteem.

RedToothBrush · 01/10/2019 00:19

Ian Dunt@iandunt
So the latest Brexit plan in full: convince the EU to override the legislation of parliament and block their own Article 50 decision-making in exchange for creating multiple borders in Ireland.

Ireland, Northern Ireland and the bit in the middle. Sounds great.

Baldrick would be proud.
