Westministenders: Conference Cult

Is it over yet?

The Tory Party Conference is in full swing in the Manchester Rain, and is proving to be its usual fun.

Johnson is caught up in all sorts of allegations of abuses of power - the non-declaration of his "friendship" to a busty blonde whom was getting a large tax payer grant, and then there the Odey question after his sister said he was under the control of the Hedge Funders.

And thats before we talk about the 40 hospitals, his provocative language and how many times he can say the word surrender.

There is lots of distancing from Lyton Crosby. And accusations that Johnson has gone 'rogue' only listening to the wisdom of Cummings and Symonds.

The Queen apparently has asked for advice as to under what circumstance she can dismiss a PM.

AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A DEAL.

PMK to say still think revoke is on the cards Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 02/10/2019 17:10

If Varadkar doesn't cave in, the EU were never going to dump Ireland

Merkel says EU countries will now examine Boris Johnson’s Brexit proposals
“closely and evaluate them together. It is important that we stick together as 27”

BigChocFrenzy · 02/10/2019 17:11

Only way that Revoke could pull the country together is if BJ does it

BigChocFrenzy · 02/10/2019 17:13

I liked this comment on his speech: 😂

PM now talking about the Fusion reactor at Culham - is indeed hottest place in solar system.

Tho it is a mainly European Commission funded project called EUROfusion,

reactor awarded to UK after Callaghan did a deal at an EU Summit

DGRossetti · 02/10/2019 17:16

Many years ago - 1988/1989, I heard a Mum in Harrow call after her toddlers:

Kylie, Jason. Stop messing around

I know JD was considered a bit naff by the more rebel teenagers of the day, but from the tiny pieces that flit past my eyes he comes across as an all round decent chap. So it's hardly surprising this thread is trying to wash Boris out of it's collective minds with something more wholesome.

It's funny how you age ... quite a lot of what I dismissed in my youth (which was admittedly a century ago Grin) has gone on to provide a level of gentle comfort, just to know it's still going, and generally not hurting anyone.

DGRossetti · 02/10/2019 17:20

I wonder if the reference to fusion - which has been "10 years away" since I could read, is a subtle suggestion that Brexit will share a similar fate ?

DGRossetti · 02/10/2019 17:22

Incidentally, the Chinese are not cracking on (little physics joke there Grin) with fusion themselves. The worlds biggest reactor being their tokamak ?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 02/10/2019 17:23

Pretty sure that derxa is a rabid leaver?

Myriade · 02/10/2019 17:23

@derxa, fwiw I agree with you.
The last 3 years have been about party politics and wishing for a unicorn ON BOTH SIDES.
The HoC didnt look much further than Leave/Remain or Tory/Labour split and no one seems to have taken the time to look at how to solve the BIG issue of bringing a country split into two behind ONE project.
Each side assuming they were RIGHT dont you know, and therefore could somehow impose their pov to the oher side.
And this has backfired massively. Both on the agreemnet front with the EU and with ending up with someone such as BJ as a PM.

Thats why I have a massive issue with LD atm. Camping on their position on Remain at this time in history is NOT the right thing to do imo. And Remain wo saying what it means is still as useless as saying you want to leave wo establishing what it means.
Thats why I have an issue with BJ and a lot of more moderate Tories who are also camping on their position on Leave. Whilst still not saying what Leave means or proposing an option to make it work. That includes the ultra No Dealers who actually havent given anyone an (realistic!) idea of how they would it make it work.

Thats why I have an issue with Labour who has decided to still try and be as no commital as possible. No lan either way just trying to surf the position that will bring them more votes.

No wonder there is now a nice cosy place available for BJ to do as he likes tbh.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/10/2019 17:24

A GNU is a Really Bad Idea BTW.

Red is there anything realistic that is a good idea?

Myriade · 02/10/2019 17:25

Does it matter of derxa is a leaver or remainer? regrdless of your side, you have to agree this is a huge mess. And that BOTh sides played a part in it.

fwiw Im pretty sure derxa is a remainer and a conservative.

prettybird · 02/10/2019 17:25

She's not Bercows - and never was Confused

She's a frazzled farmer who is worried about the future. Sad

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2019 17:27

Red is there anything realistic that is a good idea?

A single market / custom union based deal presented by Johnson is best option.

We aren't getting that.

is there anything realistic that is a good idea?

I think there are plenty of ideas that are good ideas. But they would require
1- to have more time to sort our mess out
2- to ave politicians with balls that are happy to look a bit further than party politics, rethorics etc... to concentrate on what REAL options are available and what are the REAL ISSUES faced by the population (you know the ones that actually mean something to people, like a vibrant economy, the NHS, some social security etc etc)

MockersthefeMANist · 02/10/2019 17:29

EuroFusion not to be confused with British Redeffusion, just one of the things we're bringing back when we're free, along with doorstep milk deliveries and 150 watt lightbulbs.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 02/10/2019 17:30

My mistake. I remember that she is a farmer though. Sorry derxa.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/10/2019 17:35

Bercows, Derxa is a Remainer Tory voter I think.

So like many Tory voters, everything just ticking along was ok. That's why they are called Conservative. No big changes and so on.

And I think Derxa doesn't like Labour because she thinks they remove the initiative to work.

Hope that's right Derxa. I don't mean any offence. I thought you were a Leaver too from some posts because of your support for the Tories. But I soon realised you aren't and really it's more of a betrayal for you and many like you than for people who think the Tories are awful anyway. If it was JC and Labour carrying on like this on some kind of mad Lexit dream I'm sure you wouldn't have been a bit surprised.

DGRossetti · 02/10/2019 17:42

Remainer Tory voter

Are there such beasts anymore ? I thought they were extinct ? Certainly the Tory party thinks they are, which is all that matters.

mrslaughan · 02/10/2019 17:42

@derxa - I have always wondered what swung farmers in behind leave.... I have asked and never got an answer. What do you think it was? Were they subject to a micro targeted campaign?

I know NFU were very vocal for remain.......but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/10/2019 17:46

A single market / custom union based deal presented by Johnson is best option.

Realistic, I said!

Am I right in thinking the WA is signed by TM but didn't pass in parliament? Is it actually signed or can it not be signed until it passes in parliament?

If it came back, how many would vote for it now? Is there any way of bringing it back? I know changes can't be made unless BJ negotiates them, but if he prorogues for a QS could the same one be brought back?

Could it be brought back by anyone, as in a backbencher?

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2019 17:56

Realistic, I said!

Then the answer is No.

Unfortunately.

This short clip of Liz Truss today is absolutely gobsmacking. Either she actually knows nothing about the government’s plans, or she seriously doesn’t understand them. Or both. But isn’t she International Trade Secretary?

I don’t know the precise details of exactly what we will do, and even if I did I wouldn’t tell you”
The moment International Trade Secretary Liz Truss tells @EmmaBarnett she doesn’t know how the UK will legally achieve a No Deal Brexit
