Westministenders: Conference Cult

Is it over yet?

The Tory Party Conference is in full swing in the Manchester Rain, and is proving to be its usual fun.

Johnson is caught up in all sorts of allegations of abuses of power - the non-declaration of his "friendship" to a busty blonde whom was getting a large tax payer grant, and then there the Odey question after his sister said he was under the control of the Hedge Funders.

And thats before we talk about the 40 hospitals, his provocative language and how many times he can say the word surrender.

There is lots of distancing from Lyton Crosby. And accusations that Johnson has gone 'rogue' only listening to the wisdom of Cummings and Symonds.

The Queen apparently has asked for advice as to under what circumstance she can dismiss a PM.

AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A DEAL.

I've read about Fine Gael being "West Brits", but also their flirtation with fascism, which made me regard them with some caution even during the Troubles, when they were the "friendlier" of the 2 main parties

I also wondered if West Brits generally had faded away over the years, since polls consistently show about 90% of people in Ireland want to stay in the EU
(or is that just the economy trumping sentiment ?)

Somerville · 01/10/2019 23:14

Agreed, no way Fine Gael even consider this “proposal”. Electoral suicide, even if they were minded otherwise to accept it (which they won’t be).

Also agreed that the opposition need to get their collective act together bloody quickly now. Angry

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:19

After the rumours of EU concessions earlier, which sent Sterling up, now these proposals should bring it crashing down again
More windfalls for the hedge-funders Angry

We need an enquiry into whether there has been collusion in all these rumours, why they were generated, any inside information given out

cherin · 01/10/2019 23:20

Did you watch Newsnight?? Terrifying.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:22

Nope, I don't have UK TV atm
Anything new ?

I think the worst bit is the one they don’t tell...the cover two major topics, brexit and then HK. And the HK situation is explained in fairly good way, the issue of the one country two system is...basically....think about it....the island of Ireland....
Only, in the island of HK there’s robocop police officers who fire live rounds point blank at 18yo protesters

cherin · 01/10/2019 23:32

Powell literally said: it’s a scam.
He was seething. In a British, not foaming-at-the-mouth way (that'd be me), but seething still

JeSuisPoulet · 01/10/2019 23:36

Harry having to spell out that the media is key to a democracy in an attack on the tabloids - about the only person who can point out their schemes that some leaver's might listen to perhaps?

I wouldn't be surprised if they leave the country if this attack on her continues. I'm sure they would be far happier in many other countries!

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:36

Thanks, swedish Smile

JeSuisPoulet · 01/10/2019 23:37

Cherin don't worry, I'm sure Priti is onto it...

cherin · 01/10/2019 23:38

She definitely would not like me

^Priti Patel vows to end freedom of movement 'for once and for all' - Metro

Patel then explained that Britain would be introducing an Australian style points-based immigration system that works in the ‘best interests’ of the country.
She said: ‘One that attracts and welcomes the brightest and the best. One that supports brilliant scientists, the finest academics and leading people in their fields.
‘And one that is under the control of the British Government. Because, let me tell you something.
‘This daughter of immigrants, needs no lectures from the North London metropolitan liberal elite’^

Happy to chip in to get her to do some sessions with a nice therapist, and make peace with her roots without fucking up with my life, pretty please??

JeSuisPoulet · 01/10/2019 23:38

(that was in response to HK and the rubber bullets btw!)

cherin · 01/10/2019 23:39

Perfectly timed anyway!

JeSuisPoulet · 01/10/2019 23:39

Why would the brightest and best from abroad want to come to a country full of xenophobes who hate experts Confused I thought that was what Leaver's didn't want!

Oakenbeach · 01/10/2019 23:40

I was just looking at the Parliamentary arithmetic - Labour 281, SNP 35 and PC

Labour has 247 MPs at the mo... It may have had 281 at the 2017 GE, but they’ve haemorrhaged MPs since then.... and very few of those who have left would support Corbyn as PM.

For a GNU to work, it needs a PM who is respected across the HoC, at the end of their career and with no further Governmental ambitions, and who operates as an independent and resigns any whip they may have currently.

What Corbyn is doing is trying to cajole the LDs, Tory rebels and Labour independents into supporting what would essentially be a Labour-led Government, not a GNU.

Precisely when we need party politics to take a back seat and for our MPs to act in the national interest, Corbyn is trying to make it all about him and his political ambitions. Corbyn is the villain here, not Swinson, Hammond, Boles etc, who would be happy to support someone other than themselves from a different political party.

cherin · 01/10/2019 23:40

Where’s that water cannon that Boris bought? Not sure he ever bought about the colouring in the water. Not blue, though. That’s too european. Protesters might like it.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:44

The watercannon were scrapped at a loss of 300k for the residents of London, as no buyer could be found
A certain T May said it would be illegal to use them

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:46

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

EU source: this is “an act of bad faith”

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:48

The EU are saying this openly now, or at least those v close to them are:

Fabian Zuleeg@FabianZuleeg (European Policy Centre, Brussels)

Attacking Ireland openly and behind closed doors won't isolate Dublin.

On the contrary, it unifies EU27 & shows how untrustworthy the UK government has become, reinforcing the need for the backstop.

^ But it is not a deal the UK seeks but only to shift blame^

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 23:50

BJ is going for broke, but even the ERG are looking for a way out, never mind other Tory MPs

Paul Brand@PaulBrandITV

Senior source in ERG tells me tonight “we’re ready to show a bit of leg”.

They are desperate for a way to climb down on backstop and vote for a deal.

Seems PM just needs to offer the bare minimum, tho they insist it must properly constitute “leaving the EU” in their eyes.

Oakenbeach · 01/10/2019 23:51
  • even with the LDs, i calculate another 15 or so MPs from the ranks of independents (and Caroline Lucas - who I think would support JC) would be needed to give Corbyn a majority.

Nearly all Wednesday papers seem to have used the phrase "Take it or Leave it"in their headline:
