Westministenders: Conference Cult

Is it over yet?

The Tory Party Conference is in full swing in the Manchester Rain, and is proving to be its usual fun.

Johnson is caught up in all sorts of allegations of abuses of power - the non-declaration of his "friendship" to a busty blonde whom was getting a large tax payer grant, and then there the Odey question after his sister said he was under the control of the Hedge Funders.

And thats before we talk about the 40 hospitals, his provocative language and how many times he can say the word surrender.

There is lots of distancing from Lyton Crosby. And accusations that Johnson has gone 'rogue' only listening to the wisdom of Cummings and Symonds.

The Queen apparently has asked for advice as to under what circumstance she can dismiss a PM.

AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A DEAL.

I think trying to get a straight answer out of the department for trade might be the way to go. If for no other reason than it brings it to their attention!

LarkDescending · 01/10/2019 21:21

importconundrums yes I imagine their “contact us” form will be buzzing with questions.

Or alternatively not, in that many affected people will assume, apparently wrongly, that sensible transitional arrangements will be in force.

If all else fails, can you get your MP to elicit an official answer? Possibly unrealistic in these crazy times.

Mistigri · 01/10/2019 21:23

Import I would ask on twitter, and perhaps @ some of the keen trade tweeters like that Aussie chap with a Ukrainian name.

Mistigri · 01/10/2019 21:23

MP too, tweet and email.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 21:25

Good idea, Misti
Import he is
Dmitry Grozoubinski@DmitryOpines

Importconundrums · 01/10/2019 21:25

That’s a good idea - he’s very impressive on remainiacs.

Unfortunately my MP is a labour Brexiter and very unlikely to be of any use Hmm

cherin · 01/10/2019 21:28

It’s pretty insane, I’ll admit. But I think if you import stuff which is made in the EU and don’t need to send it back to the EU, there will be not much that you can do, at least until the day that a ‘UKCA’ accreditation will be implemented. I can’t see how anyone will expect you do otherwise....

Boris. Aaaah, it goes back to his first love, I understand now. Such an immature character....His first wife was half Italian, he clearly colluded with an Italo American to eventually shag another one in passing....:-) what can I say? La dolce vita....
(I’m just kidding)
(Kind of)
(Shall we mix a bit of Corleone to the Putin/trump theory? Or is is just lust?)

Importconundrums · 01/10/2019 21:28

Thanks all, you’ve made me feel like I still have some options to explore!

I wonder how often scenarios like this are being repeated up and down the country Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 21:31

Fluffy I think this was your question ?

I've found the article I saw about the EU only accepting an extension request from the PM_

It was the German Foreign Mimister who stated it and also only if it was to hold a GE

BUT the article has since been edited, so I can see the original headline in Google about the PM - see screenshot -
but the sentences I remember have been removed and replaced by:

"UPDATE
September 28, 2019, at 5:02 p.m.
This story has been updated to remove a reference to a statement that the German foreign minister, Heiko Maas, is expected to issue."

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 21:33

Title changed in article too:

merrymouse · 01/10/2019 21:47

From the article it looks as though there are bodies that will provide UKCA assessment, they just won't be recognised by the EU.

"Affected manufacturers/importers will therefore need to make urgent plans to switch to EU-recognised conformity assessment bodies if they wish to continue to market in the EU after a no deal Brexit."

cherin · 01/10/2019 21:51

The problem is that those bodies don’t actually exist, yet. In essence, there are labs but they actually haven’t got formal recognition yet because the new protocols don’t exist

JustAnotherPoster00 · 01/10/2019 22:00

I figured it out 0.000001 seconds

merrymouse · 01/10/2019 22:02

Oh I see now - it's the "EU recognised conformity assessment bodies" that don't exist.

RedToothBrush · 01/10/2019 22:02

Nick Eardley @nickeardleybbc
BREAKING: Boris Johnson to set out his Brexit proposal to the EU tomorrow (Wednesday).

British officials say it's a final offer and if rejected, there will be no further negotiation before 31 October.

No 10 official: "This government will not negotiate delay."

Johnson’s new deal.

DarkAtEndOfUk · 01/10/2019 22:09

Yes, and he's saying how reasonable his proposals are and "The public will no longer be "taken for fools" by those who want to delay or block the process, he will claim."

So really learned lessons about inflammatory attitudes and language then. The EU as big bad bully enemies it is. Does he actually want border clashes with France, and clashes among fishing boats? Why not I suppose, as he clearly doesn't give a damn about the growth of violence in the UK itself. Perhaps he's not even aware of it in his Eton bubble .

Wtf are the Lib Dems playing at too (apart from politics)? Wanting straight revoke without a PV, but won't countenance a particular person as a caretaker for even a few weeks??

Is there something in the water in London, only they're all clearly stark raving mad.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 01/10/2019 22:11

Basilpots he must be on bloody glue!

Eyewhisker · 01/10/2019 22:14

Basil, that’s just insane. Not even a pretence at having a deal that’s acceptable to the EU. I wonder why he wants a No Deal so badly?

Jason118 · 01/10/2019 22:14

Ah, the old ultimatum strategy, or 'lose, lose' as we call it in business.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 22:16

The EU will refuse v quickly, totally absurd cake demands 🤦🏻‍♀️

BJ is pulling their plonker:

Peter Foster@pmdfoster

First, the broad offer:

  • Northern Ireland remains aligned for agri/industrial goods, dynamically, for four years
  • But remains in UK customs territory, so customs checks N-S border in Ireland. /2

So that creates TWO borders.

  • one east-west between GB and NI, which will require declarations for goods moving to NI after 2021

-and one N-S for customs etc. along lines @tconnellyRTE^ leaked last night /3^

  • BUT the UK will seek an immediate and blanket exemption from Union Customs code in next 10 days.
  • NO longer looking to punt customs Q into future relationship, but wants in-principle UK agreement in Withdrawal Agreement. /4

The UK will not ask for an extenstion to transition period.

GB will leave with FTA by 2021, leaving NI in this time-limited arrangement. /5

The UK wants NI OUTSIDE the EU's VAT regime
- which is a massive lacuna for EU Commission which considers VAT major fraud risk/need for checks controls.

AND UK wants NO level-playing field alignment,
while remaining permanently in Single Electricity Market /6

After four years, NI parties get a 'say' on whether to
a) continue alignment with EU single market regs OR
b) align with GB/UK 'mainland'

Do you get that?
In practice that means DUP 'veto', since way Stormont works, they can always effectively block decision to stay aligned/7

But there is no mirror/equvialent mechanism to go the other way

  • ie for NI to choose to join EU CU to avoid the hardening border that would result form decision for NI to 'rejoin' UK.

I cannot see this causing anything other than anger in NI context. /8

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 01/10/2019 22:20

I think I need his plan in diagram form. I'm too tired to make sense of it but know it's batshit and the rest of the EU will say oh do fuck off dear Boris you giant turd of an odious little man.

DarkAtEndOfUk · 01/10/2019 22:20

The EU will refuse v quickly, totally absurd cake demands

I think that's what he wants. There's no other explanation for it.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2019 22:22

Peter Foster@pmdfoster

Understand Dominic Cummings told meeting of top advisers last Friday that UK "won't be hanging around to negotiate"
- “If they reject our offer, that’s it.” /10

What is the UK's nominal gambit here?

See tactical analysis here, but the idea is to box in Ireland - as PatLeahyITrecently reported, UK dips running round saying * @LeoVaradkarrwill cave /11

The aim, I think, is to present a choice:

EITHER - no deal now, and customs border immediately

OR - accept a deal, get £££, citizens rights etc and orderly transition to this 'tech' border

The hope is Merkel and co will squeeze Ireland /12

But that totally misses

a) @LeoVaradkar preference to have a no deal, if he must, to give leverage to solution he wants (rather than acquiescing in a border)

b) Merkel's attachment to EU unity and intergity of SM /13

In summary?

I cannot for the life of me see how this flies; or could ever be intended to fly.

Be interesting to see public EU reaction. 14/ENDS
