Westministenders: Conference Cult

Is it over yet?

The Tory Party Conference is in full swing in the Manchester Rain, and is proving to be its usual fun.

Johnson is caught up in all sorts of allegations of abuses of power - the non-declaration of his "friendship" to a busty blonde whom was getting a large tax payer grant, and then there the Odey question after his sister said he was under the control of the Hedge Funders.

And thats before we talk about the 40 hospitals, his provocative language and how many times he can say the word surrender.

There is lots of distancing from Lyton Crosby. And accusations that Johnson has gone 'rogue' only listening to the wisdom of Cummings and Symonds.

The Queen apparently has asked for advice as to under what circumstance she can dismiss a PM.

AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A DEAL.

But handily enough Inniu, there aren't any DUP constituencies along the border so no one important for Tories lives there. Will Donegal basically get cut off by this proposed buffer? Great news for the tourist industry too....

It's just some kind of brexiteer joke. Noone can be expected to take this seriously.

I recently joined the Lib Dem's - but I despair of there policy . I can't believe they would veto JC as a caretaker PM

It would be nice to think it's some sort of clever ploy to keep Boris and chums feeling smug.

On the basis that the UK works under collective cabinet responsibility I am really struggling to see what could be so bad about a brief Corbyn premiership when compared to the shitshow of no-deal ?

Or is Swinson determined to prove herself as thick as Brexiteers by creating her own "red lines" ?

Maybe she looked at how much hate Nick Clegg got for enabling the Tories* and has decided "Anything he could do, I could do better ?"

*I know, I know.

mrslaughan · 01/10/2019 10:55

@DGRossetti
It's not only failing to work with Corbyn, it's the fucking Lib Dem MEP's asking the EU not to allow an extension on the weekend....... world has gone mad, and it takes something to make JC the sensible one in the room......

ListeningQuietly · 01/10/2019 10:57

When I was at school we had a problem with flashers near the gates
so we were taught (by the teachers) to put our keys through our fingers in our pocket and be willing to wave it in the face of anybody who gave us a hard time.
Knowing I was not defenceless made a huge difference to me at work in the 80's

DGRossetti · 01/10/2019 11:08

Brief diversion, but BBC are showing an 8-part adaptation of "Name of the Rose" starting next week (Friday).

As you were ...

DadDadDad · 01/10/2019 11:10

I understand the criticism of Swinson, but I thought her claim was that even if the LDs backed Corbyn as caretaker PM, there isn't the numbers amongst MPs overall to give a majority to that proposal. So, for that reason a different caretaker is needed.

By the way, I think we should refer to Boris as a caretaker PM: he has a minority, is basically doing one task (getting a deal, allegedly), and is otherwise marking time until a GE.

DGRossetti · 01/10/2019 11:16

^When I was at school we had a problem with flashers near the gates

Be curious to know how that advice would stack up today ...

borntobequiet · 01/10/2019 11:17

Swinson's interview:

Corby wouldn't get support from Tory rebels/defectors or Labour defectors, being despised by both. So any initiative under him would fail.

MrPan · 01/10/2019 11:19

Can anyone help?
This 'convention' that the Opposition Leader has first go at forming a govt.

Has this happened, ever?

Wilson in 1974 Feb was a minority govt. after an election.

Have we had a VoNC followed by the LOHMLO forming a govt.

Sostenueto · 01/10/2019 11:24

I find Jo Swindon as obnoxious as ' loathesome' leadsom. ( anyone see the audiences response to AL speech at Tory conference?Grin)
BREAKING.....leaks of Bojo deal on NI deal is not the real proposal he's putting forward allegedly...........
BREAKING...... The rise by 22% of people dying on Britain's streets in 2018 is the highest ever recorded. Hope the Tories are proud of thatAngry

Hoooo · 01/10/2019 11:25

Oh!
Thanks dg!
One of my favourite novels

I must admit, whilst in normal times, it would be the expected thing for JC as leader of the largest party in the alliance to become PM of that alliance, it should be clear to anyone with a smidgen of a brain that these are most emphatically not normal times.

With that in mind, maybe convention can be stayed and rather than faff about discussing who isn't a suitable PM, could the powerful minds of the rebel alliance apply themselves to someone who is.

Especially as speaking for myself, I couldn't really give a shit who it is, as long as we swerve no deal.

If people are willing to argue about the make of ambulance that arrives at the scene of the RTA where they are bleeding to death, you really have to wonder about their sanity.

borntobequiet · 01/10/2019 11:27

Corbyn

DGRossetti · 01/10/2019 11:28

The FTPA complicates things, and it's not a convention, it's law.

Sostenueto · 01/10/2019 11:30

Exactly this!

Sostenueto · 01/10/2019 11:33

As I said before they put their party, personal feelings way ahead of the country.

As far as I'm concerned Parliament might as well stay closed for what good they are doing.
Its all crap and meanwhile people continue to die,.............

cherin · 01/10/2019 11:37

@NoCryingInEngineering let’s not forget Grenfell and Lakenal house and a few more. I was thinking about yesterday’s proposal to allow double storey extensions without planning permission or consultation. First of course you’d block the right of lights of your neighbours (but that’s just light, who cares, yes you can measure but it’s for boffins), then....I can see the houses built on London clay slowly toppling down...down primrose hill they go, ooohhh...

MrPan · 01/10/2019 11:39

The FTPA complicates things, and it's not a convention, it's law

I don't think it is law. The FTPA doesn't say it, and from what I've just googled any MP can be the new PM. (hence the search for a hero)

And I cant think of this situation arising ever. So 'convention' and law do not apply AFAISee and Corbyn is sort of bluffing a bit.

Possibly...

but yes, just get your shit together please and avoid the disaster.

TokyoSushi · 01/10/2019 11:40

I'm cross today. It's October. They went to such lengths to stop the prorogation and what have they done since they've returned? Argued about language and tone, called each other names, but otherwise fuck all.

Swinson won't accept JC as PM or even GNU interim leader. There is no progress, no plan, no VONC, no election, no way of stopping BJ and his ludicrous move the border 5 miles fro the border and pretend its not therefore a border, border.

They might as well just say, run down the clock, be my guest, lets no deal, because other than whinge and moan, were not actually going to do anything about it! Argh!

Hoooo · 01/10/2019 11:41

Someone has doused themselves in flamable liquid outside parliament...

MrPan · 01/10/2019 11:42

It;'s about timing Tokyo, I think. I'd hope they are furiously busy in earnest discussion about 'game planning' rather than anything else.

lonelyplanetmum · 01/10/2019 11:44

The rise by 22% of people dying on Britain's streets in 2018 is the highest ever recorded. Hope the Tories are proud of that

But you see this is a plus.It means there are less vulnerable people for society to support.

That what hasn't filtered through yet at all (and probably never will). The Leave vote has opened the door to increased support for a 'survival of the fittest' right wing ideology.

The likes of Farage and JRM believe that if some one is bankrupted to pay for health care (as in the US) that's the unfortunate law of the jungle.

If workers are injured by effluent or emissions from a factory due to low regulation that's an unfortunate consequence of their choice of job.

If people have eventual health problems from eating poorly regulated additive filled food, that's the individual's choice for repeatedly buying it.

If homeless people die on the street then that's an unfortunate result of whatever issues they faced.

This is the ideology that has been unleashed and I don't think it will go back in the box now.

lonelyplanetmum · 01/10/2019 11:44

Sorry missed the flammable liquid post- god.

TokyoSushi · 01/10/2019 11:48

But time is running very short @MrPan and I have a terrible feeling that no cunning plan is going to emerge!

I will be delighted to be proven wrong!

pamperramper · 01/10/2019 11:52

Taking a day off today. Enjoying the West Highland Railway. At least we still have beauty (for now).
