Westminstenders: The Tory Party Spectacular

A row over parliamentary language and conduct and how MPs are afraid of extremists has over shadowed talk of Brexit.

Cummings has said if you don't want to leave without a deal, vote for a deal.

Yet there isn't a Johnson approved one in front of the Commons and the EU are utterly despairing of Johnson's blank non papers and his full on Trump bullshit.

Then there's the threats to the rule of law.

Apparently there are five known suggestions to bypass the Benn Act and refuse to ask for an extension.
See Twitter Thread Here

This weekend sees the start of the Tory Party Conference. With a parliamentary vote to block a recess, its rather scuppered plans for the rest of the conference. Johnson's planned speech at the conference clashes with PMQ so he may well not attend the Commons.

Expect the conference to be.... Er... Inflammatory...

In fairness, the group predicting a Tory win has imo more reliable posters such as YouGov

whereas the other group includes Survation, whom I haven't trusted since those dodgy events after the ref that led to massive windfalls by prominant wealthy Leavers who were hedging Sterling.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/09/2019 20:15

Doesn't suit their narrative though, @Alsohuman.

Not only that BigChoc, but they still haven’t twigged that individual EU countries (France) won’t be entering into separate deals with the UK.

Barnier must have the patience of a saint.

CendrillonSings · 28/09/2019 20:24

Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to drop in on election night so we can see if the polls turn out to be true. Fair warning: if they are, I will be utterly insufferable. If not, I’ll be sulking.

Something to look forward to, either way!

NoWordForFluffy · 28/09/2019 20:27

You do recall the 2017 polls?!

Given a) times are so incredibly turbulent, b) the extent of polls changes during the 2017 election campaign, and c) the likelihood of substantial tactical voting; confidence in the outcome of the likely forthcoming election must surely be extremely low!

NoWordForFluffy · 28/09/2019 20:36

Yep, flouncy, the ones where the Tories had a MASSIVE lead.

CendrillonSings · 28/09/2019 20:37

Do you expect Boris to announce policies like the dementia tax that kick the Tories’ core voters in the face? I don’t. Labour’s platform is now much more extreme following the conference (just wait till their new immigration policy becomes common knowledge - it’ll send their heartlands into cardiac arrest!). The Lib Dems are now also a viable home for Remainers which they weren’t before.

There’s all to play for from my perspective. Like I said, we’ll know soon enough.

Oakenbeach · 28/09/2019 20:38

....the Conservatives still have a 12-point lead over Labour in today’s Opinium poll for the Observer

Down from 15% lead last week... Opinium does nonetheless look better than all other polls for Tories. If Remainers want some comfort, the EU elections tended to overstate the ‘Leave’ vote.
But as per my previous post, the chances of any poll being accurate forecast of the forthcoming GE is very low.

I don't think many people will be surprised on here if the Tories get a majority. Anything less than a majority will be a pretty good going.

Bit like anything less than no deal on 31st October. Don't think these threads are renowned for optimism.

Anyone would think we're all laughing up our sleeves and going "it's gonna be revoke and a Corbyn landslide!! You foolish Tories"

Oakenbeach · 28/09/2019 20:50

Do you expect Boris to announce policies like the dementia tax that kick the Tories’ core voters in the face?

No, but his handling of Brexit could have a far bigger impact!

For instance, if he brings back a re-heated withdrawal agreement, I’d expect the Tories to haemorrhage many more votes to the Brexit Party than it would win back from those centrists he’s alienated.

If he smashes through a no-deal, I wouldn’t necessarily expect the votes of a grateful public in the polling booth - he’ll have served his purpose for the Brexiteers who aren’t naturally Tories - in the same way the Britain didn’t vote back Churchill in 1945.

Oakenbeach · 28/09/2019 20:55

Those having coronaries are probably already intending to vote Brexit Party!

Grinning Carrie and Johnson plastered all over my news apps turning up at in Manchester. I still find it extraordinary.

When they arrived they were actually greeted by shouts of “stop brexit!”, albeit bbc news at 7 said “it was only a small group of protesters, they’ve were cheered by the party members”
(Imagine if they had been shouted at, both outside and inside their party conference, then!)

tobee · 28/09/2019 21:41

I'm not sure that the bbc needed to comment on the size of the group booing?

tobee · 28/09/2019 21:42

*shouting stop Brexit.

Arborea · 28/09/2019 22:56

Did I just see that Margaret Hodge has been deselected?! Shock

I'm not Jewish, however I am very concerned about the culture of anti semitism and intolerance within some sections of Labour's support. I follow a few people on Twitter whose artistic work I admire, but who appear to be of a very hard-left bent and although I've often been turned off by the 'if you're not with us you're against us' rhetoric, the past few days have seen some truly distasteful stuff. Not just celebrating the deselection of someone like Hodge (whose wikipedia entry itself reads like it's been written by people who don't like her!) but sharing grotesque images of Jo Swinson and trying to get hashtags trending about 'getting' her. For a floating voter, this stuff is hard to stomach - why would someone like me want to lend my vote to a shower like that?

p.s. I'm seeing elsewhere that there will now be a full selection process in Hodge's constituency, so it's a case of 'down but not (necessarily) out' - still doesn't reflect well on my Twitter buddies though...

3dogs2cats · 28/09/2019 23:59

I am very sad about Margaret Hodge. She is very hard working. I think I will have to resign my membership. It is all such a mess.
