Westminstenders: The Tory Party Spectacular

A row over parliamentary language and conduct and how MPs are afraid of extremists has over shadowed talk of Brexit.

Cummings has said if you don't want to leave without a deal, vote for a deal.

Yet there isn't a Johnson approved one in front of the Commons and the EU are utterly despairing of Johnson's blank non papers and his full on Trump bullshit.

Then there's the threats to the rule of law.

Apparently there are five known suggestions to bypass the Benn Act and refuse to ask for an extension.
See Twitter Thread Here

This weekend sees the start of the Tory Party Conference. With a parliamentary vote to block a recess, its rather scuppered plans for the rest of the conference. Johnson's planned speech at the conference clashes with PMQ so he may well not attend the Commons.

Expect the conference to be.... Er... Inflammatory...

So BJ has said No he did not grope the reporter and people want to hear about their plans blah blah blah.

Have I missed him saying 'This is something I would never do as it is wrong and I respect women'?

Tx Grin

Robert the Bruce for example is Robert De Brus.

Mentioned on this thread yesterday Grin

For some reason I really want to read that as "Robert De jus" Confused

PusheenLovesPizza · 30/09/2019 17:10

And, it must be said, the internal fighting did not stop with the Norman arrival. Just look at the Clan system and the different patterns of shifting allegiances. The different heritages and long history’s of feuds and alliances still have an impact on politics today. For example, places with Scandinavian heritage often return Lib Dems.

Largely speaking, Central Belt= Anglo-Saxon, West and Western Islands = Celtic, North-East= Pictish, Parts of North Coasts, Orkney&Shetland = Scandinavian/Viking fringe.

PusheenLovesPizza · 30/09/2019 17:12

I think I mentioned De Brus under my last username, when I was of an arachnid bent.

PusheenLovesPizza · 30/09/2019 17:14

And under a user name prior to that, I mentioned I didn’t like the highly sexualised turns of phrase being used as nicknames for Boris. I seem to remember you took issue with that DGR. So I was surprised to see you so vocal today about the importance of recognising historic abuse.

MockersthefeMANist · 30/09/2019 17:15

Awwwww

Zahawi on PM now tying himself in knots trying not to admit the LW increase is a back of a fag packet job with no consultation.

prettybird · 30/09/2019 17:17

Lots of Scandinavian and French words in Scots - such as bing and ashet Wink

Despite claims to the contrary, I firmly believe that the rise of England and later Britain as a world power was due to the relatively early "unification" England showed, compared to other parts of Europe. In particular France and Spain. Especially once Wales had been subsumed. That's before you consider the SOP of successive British regimes has been to continue with the tried and tested Roman model of divide and conquer - from Scotland through to India and Africa.

It's something DF used to ask my DM about, bearing in mind Italy wasn't Italy until Garibalidi ... only 150 years ago. And even when DF did his national service, not all of Italy spoke Italian. As I realised when I met family friends - especially older folk from the south.

Why Europe’s new populists tell so many lies – and do it so shamelessly

A good look at lying, culture, and populism.

Confused Confused ?

If you knew me in real life (you wouldn't like me Grin) you'd know I'm very good at vacillating and trying to see both sides of any argument. It's a Gemini thing Grin

What have I done now ?

pamperramper · 30/09/2019 17:25

Doctors vary around the UK. In England, we got appointments very quickly. In Scotland, we have to wait 2 weeks. The hospital appointment waiting times are extremely long in our part of Scotland. Twice I've been offered a consultation or procedure and they've then not listed it at all.

DGRossetti · 30/09/2019 17:25

Bairn ?

I used to work with a Geordie (although he corrected me once and noted he was a Wearsider, not a Tynesider ?). First turn of phrase for him for children was "bairns" ... which never failed to remind me of "Cam' ye' o'er Frae France" from my folk music days Grin ...

I still want a "kittle hoosie".

DGRossetti · 30/09/2019 17:28

We live 3 minutes walk from our medical practice, and can choose from 5 doctors usually - we can book online and order repeat prescriptions online. I imagine it'll be the first thing to go when Trumps cronies eviscerate the NHS. Can't have NHS scum getting a better service than private patients, can we ?

MockersthefeMANist · 30/09/2019 17:36

There is a Norwegian branch of the supporters club for Stenhuismuir FC, because the name is pure Norse for 'stonehouse wall.'

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 30/09/2019 17:37

I've just realised why, when I see Matt Hancock mentioned, I wonder why people are referring to a comedian at the Tory Party Conference. I'm not very good with names. Grin

MockersthefeMANist · 30/09/2019 17:40

Mat-Hand-Cock

You could mime it.

DadDadDad · 30/09/2019 17:40

DGR - we also live less than 5 mins walk from our practice and have that online access. But it is part of a partnership that is spread over a number of neighbouring towns, so you can get an appointment but it can be with a doctor who might be half an hour's drive away. Hmm

On the face of it, it sounds like a cost effective system to allocate you a GP appointment somewhere in your area, but it is frustrating to lose that connection to a local team that you get to know - let alone all the issues about increased car use or disadvantaging those who can't drive (children, elderly - people who rarely need a doctor of course...)

tobee · 30/09/2019 17:42

Spitting Image is, I believe, going to be made in America for an international audience, so not sure UK politics will be quite so front and centre as we remember.

DGRossetti · 30/09/2019 17:43

Mat-Hand-Cock You could mime it.

Are the Tories signing their conference ? I have to be brutally honest, and say I would be (pleasantly) surprised if they were. Shame on me.

Dockray · 30/09/2019 17:45

I do not trust anyone wanting to "cut red tape" to have done their homework. A couple of years ago I was invited to talk to a government adviser tasked with cutting red tape. He was after supporting evidence to abolish a particular area of legislation. He'd given no consideration of the knock on effects of what he wanted to do. So I gave him stats that showed there was a saving but also showed how it would negatively impact some of the most high profile ambitions of the government. At the end of the meeting he was genuinely shocked and admitted he hadn't thought through what he was proposing at all and how it interacted with other areas of legislation. He'd just been given a list by a minister and told to find evidence to support it.

Nadim Zahawi, in response to the question (on Sky's "News Hour"), "How do you know that there was no improper allocation of public funds?" (re BJ and Jennifer Arcuri) answered in complete sincerity, "Because the PM told me" and that it's just a Sadiq Khan/City Hall plot. (I'm sure that police detectives would love to take that labour saving approach with suspects Wink "I didn't do it Guv. Honest" "OK. I believe you." Hmm)

But when asked about Charlotte Edwardes, Zahawi wouldn't say out and out that she was lying but that she should be asked the question Confused and then changed the subject to talk about businesses wanting certainty and that BJ's job was to deliver Brexit and that everything else was secondary Hmm

Thanks, Pusheen Smile That was very informative about Scottish heritages in the different areas

BigChocFrenzy · 30/09/2019 19:06
