No man's land?

What is it called between South and North Korea? Demilitirastion zone?

bellinisurge · 01/10/2019 06:45

That plan appears to work exactly the same as a customs border in the sea apart from one crucial point. The DUP areas of NI are in the same zone as the mainland of the UK and nationalist areas, which are still part of the UK , by the way, are in some kind of customs alignment with the EU. And then there's West Belfast. Which is still in the mainland UK zone.
Breaking up NI in other words, with West Belfast as some kind of West Berlin.

You couldn't make that shit up.

MrPan · 01/10/2019 07:52

As the RTE presenter summarised: " Is it worth the non-paper it isn't written on?"

Bare-faced bollocks from Johnson to 'claim' he tried to negotiate with those johnny foreigner types and they absolutely refused to listen.

Posturing that only the knuckle-draggers wouldn't see through.

Boris Johnson: Irish customs checks will be 'reality' after Brexit

Boris Johnson says the "reality" of Brexit is there will need to be customs checks on the island of Ireland after the UK leaves the EU.
But the PM rejected claims that would effectively mean a hard border, in the form of a series of customs posts set five or 10 miles back.

gonnamythme · 01/10/2019 18:56

So the truth (albeit briefly) has finally crossed a Brexiter’s lips...

How many times have I had arguments on here with clueless fools who’ve insisted that no customs checks would be necessary in ireland? Rather a lot.

Shall look forward to them all rushing back on here to admit that they’ve been taken in by an outrageous lie for the past 3 years and that they’ve seen the light.

Ha!

Parker231 · 01/10/2019 20:38

We haven’t left yet and things are already getting worse. I hate to think how bad it’s going to get.

Miljah you keep trotting out..

What is the eu as the most goggled term

Why?

bellinisurge · 02/10/2019 16:39

How's the pub today?

Parker231 · 02/10/2019 16:59

Just read Boris’s proposals - what is he playing at - either the EU or MP’s will accept it. He’s just trying to set himself up for a legal challenge when he tries for a no deal exit avoiding the Benn Bill. He is getting worse by the day.

Parker231 · 02/10/2019 17:10

Boris’s letter

Parker231 · 02/10/2019 17:13

Sorry letter won’t load - it’s on Twitter if anyone wants to read it

MysteryTripAgain · 02/10/2019 17:13

He’s just trying to set himself up for a legal challenge when he tries for a no deal exit avoiding the Benn Bill

Research how to negate the Benny Hill Act started the day after opposition voted. So far only John Major has worked out how the Benn Act can be set aside.

DustyDiamond · 02/10/2019 18:00

ERG & DUP have both suggested they're warm to BJ's suggestion

According to 'EU sources' (Sky journalist said this) - the EU's position is very much 'there's going to be an extension anyway so no credible threat of no-deal anymore, so EU not likely to budge'
(Not Direct quote, but essence of what he was saying)

Slow hand clap to anti-brexit coalition for spiking the focusing of minds which the deadline provided.

As it stands, if EU go for new proposals then likely most of ERG, DUP, Tories, most former Tories & some Labour MPs will vote for it.

But all hinges on EU.
Who weirdly maintain they will not reopen & amend WA because the backstop is so very important, and yet backstop is the sticking point for WA to pass in WM, which ultimately means no deal & no backstop at all.

bellinisurge · 02/10/2019 18:29

So he's talked you all around to NI staying in the single market. Only the customs union to go. And the default for NI is to stay in the single market/customs union if an every four year Stormont vote fails.

DustyDiamond · 02/10/2019 18:35

NI having its own agency & periodically re-evaluating is sensible I think

Parker231 · 02/10/2019 18:43

Don’t think the EU and especially Ireland will agree. Labour have already criticised it.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/10/2019 18:44

So probably enough support to get it through Parliament but if the EU dont accept it then no deal will be their fault. Quite a canny move by Boris.

DustyDiamond · 02/10/2019 18:46

So, DUP & ERG on board, and Stephen Kinnock has just said "if Dublin & Brussels are happy then we're happy"
(Meaning MPs for a deal presumably)

All down to EU now

WA with backstop as is will never get through WM, therefore risking no-deal & no backstop at all

WA with proposed backstop very likely to pass therefore a guaranteed transition period & route forward to a deal which hopefully negates the backstop anyway

DustyDiamond · 02/10/2019 18:49

So probably enough support to get it through Parliament but if the EU dont accept it then no deal will be their fault

Yep
Hanging on to the backstop so dogmatically is very strange to me tbh - it's the biggest block to an agreement
And if no agreement then no backstop anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

DustyDiamond · 02/10/2019 18:50

Guy Verhofstadt not happy with it

DustyDiamond · 02/10/2019 18:51

Bet he'd have been warm to it if no-deal was still on table for end of month though....

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 02/10/2019 18:59

Interesting.

I liked the line about politicians solving larger crisis in past, I'm sure we can solve this one.

So.. Ball in eu court.

Love how democratic eu is when all we hear is opinions of junker, guy and barnier.

Great bloody eu of 2 men

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 02/10/2019 19:03

Wow, just googled and guy looks shell shocked.

Parker231 · 02/10/2019 19:05

EU won’t accept it if it doesn’t work for their members - UK’s fault for messing around for three years and then trying to rush it through at the last minute.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/10/2019 19:07

Guy Verhofstadt not happy with it
What country does he represent? And people wonder why we want out of the EU.
We have a probably 'acceptable' deal. The EU will now have to show its true colours, that it will never accept the UK leaving the EU and if we do manage to get out they intend to try and give us a punishment beating.
