Jasjas1973 - That is commercial fruit - Apples, pears, blackberries, raspberries, plums, rhubarb etc.

Mamamia456 · 18/09/2019 15:12

Hersymphony - By not appreciating it I mean not turning up for appointments which costs the NHS millions à year. Having the courtesy to cancel an appointment so that somebody else can use it etc.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 18/09/2019 15:16

I thought you might do - as outlined upthread this is not the reason why the NHS is under threat. Yes it is a perfectly reasonable thing to make people aware of, though the amount of money spent on such initiatives is not actually effective, but it is not the cause

HerSymphonyAndSong · 18/09/2019 15:17

I mean, bless you for trying to make a complicated thing the simple fault of individuals, but it won’t wash

AuldAlliance · 18/09/2019 15:17

Clavinova
Maybe we should be looking to copy some of the initiatives used in France?

I misunderstood your initial post comparing France, Germany and the UK.
I hadn't realised you were suggesting that a higher number of food banks distributing more meals was a good thing and a potentially positive outcome of Brexit.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 18/09/2019 15:18

Which is the same MO as saying that the reason people don’t appreciate the blackberry season is because they are forced to buy strawberries in December 🙄

LulaLandry · 18/09/2019 15:19

"Society probably won't collapse" is an example of how life will get better after Brexit?

Of course not, if you'd read the rest of my posts you'll see I'm a remainer, I've just said I don't think it is going to be a mad max type scenario.

I don't know why people get so snippy with those of us who don't think it's going to be utter out and out, end of civilization catastrophe. I don't support brexit, I think it will be crap.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 18/09/2019 15:25

I may get fast-tracked through passport control leaving DH and kids to languish with other "3rd nations"... not sure if this will make my life better or not as yet. 10 mins of peace and quiet V 30 mins of post queue whinging/bad temper.
Shellfish might be cheaper [we export most of it apparently], along with home grown lamb [when in season] for a bit until sheep farmers go bankrupt presumably.
Struggling to find anything else really?

BollocksToBrexit · 18/09/2019 15:28

Cheaper local holidays as I'll never be stepping foot again in the UK.

Helmetbymidnight · 18/09/2019 15:30

i think saying you cant get worked up about a no deal brexit because your family's legacy of suffering is extraordinarily snippy but appreciate that probably wasnt the intention.

ExpletiveDelighted · 18/09/2019 15:31

I can't think of any positives at all.

Helmetbymidnight · 18/09/2019 15:32

so mama, benefits of brexit include freezing fruits and less cancellation at gps.

thats ....niche.

Clavinova · 18/09/2019 15:38

AuldAlliance
Nothing to do with Brexit - my original post was side-tracked by another poster who mentioned 'food banks' - the 'go-to soundbite' these days.

I hadn't realised you were suggesting that a higher number of food banks distributing more meals was a good thing

It might well be a good thing if those people are not receiving adequate food - how do the 3,000 EU nationals rough sleeping in London eat?

NeverTwerkNaked · 18/09/2019 15:44

I don't know if my children will survive. They rely on a shortage medicine.
I don't know if my best friend will survive, she relies on a shortage medicine.
Half my family have already moved abroad because their jobs moved due to Brexit.

So far I can't think of anything positive at all.

Mamamia456 · 18/09/2019 15:47

Hersymphony - I'm not trying to lay all the blame on individuals, but we need to do our bit too, we can't blame it all on the Government whether that be Labour or Tories, millions of pounds are lost each year because of people missing appointments, people not returning wheelchairs, crutches, etc. We need to stop just assuming that the NHS will always be there.

Helmetbymidnight · 18/09/2019 15:51

So mamamia, I'm still not getting your point at all. I've seen you talking about missing GP appointments on lots of Brexit threads. Clearly, there is a strong link for you. What is it?

Mamamia456 · 18/09/2019 15:51

Hersymphony - Surely money shouldn't need to be spent on telling us to cancel appointments or to return equipment loaned to us by the NHS. We shouldn't need telling, that's the point.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/09/2019 15:51

I go blackberry picking. They are mostly done now in September. And the accessible areas, where you don't need a car, are picked out a lot of the time. Exactly how will this feed additional people? Unless they turn over golf courses and other useless areas to blackberries? Dig for victory!

And I'd love to know why the EU is preventing the UK having fresh, flavourful, seasonal fruit and veg when the French and Italians always do. Could it be Shock demand?

My upside, no more exporting langoustine to France. Langoustine for all! It's a niche area. But langoustine yum!

jasjas1973 · 18/09/2019 15:53

Jasjas1973 - That is commercial fruit - Apples, pears, blackberries, raspberries, plums, rhubarb etc

None of the above produce fruit in December, January Feb March, which is winter, it is not commercially viable to grow under glass

Rhubarb is a vegetable and can be forced for an early crop.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/09/2019 15:53

Bollocks. Just found out the UK also exports them to China. As you were. No langoustines. Sad

BertrandRussell · 18/09/2019 15:53

“My upside, no more exporting langoustine to France”

Until they’re fished out.....

OP posts:
jasjas1973 · 18/09/2019 15:56

Mana - you need to stop digging!!! so to speak.

Sure we can adapt growing techniques and make all our appointments/return walking sticks etc but it still leaves us all worse off then if we remained, which is the point here.

BeardedMum · 18/09/2019 15:59

Yep - people will die including children but you know.... in the name of democracy🙄

Filmbuffmum · 18/09/2019 15:59

Perhaps we all need to look on it as an opportunity to prepare for when climate change really starts to hit here (sorry if this point has already been made). A kind of practice run...

Mamamia456 · 18/09/2019 16:01

Ohflipping - I didn't say blackberries grew in the winter, but you can freeze them to use in the winter months, or am I the only one on here who does that?
