Brexit

If you can’t get what you want... what would you settle for? (Remainers and brexiters)

Just curiosity really about if there’s any space for compromise given how polarized the arguement is getting. Personally I voted remain and don’t want to leave at all, but No Deal being the absolute worst outcome (in my opinion) Id be happy with us leaving with some variation of Theresa May’s deal or other compromise (well, not happy, less unhappy).
If you are pro-remain would you accept leaving with a deal to accept the risk of no deal? If you’re a leaver would your second option at this stage be to leave with No Deal or find a compromise with the EU (and if so what)?

Mystery - why don’t you move away from supporting a no deal - we can’t have it because of the GFA and the immediate impact on to individuals personally in health, jobs and social care or business due to the disruption to supply chain and investment.

EEA like Norway as can still deal with the EU, but have freedom to look elsewhere at same time.

BeardedMum · 18/09/2019 15:53

Yes Norway can through EFTA but the UK cannot assume they can become EFTA members. They would have to be accepted by current member states.

BilboBercow · 18/09/2019 17:35

Right now pretty much anything other than no deal. Preferably a soft Brexit- Norway plus or something like that.... but yeah, anything but no deal

Gosh some people have a lot of time to post on MN.
Has more than one leave supporter posted on this thread?

On BBC news that both Finnish and French have said Johnson has till end of September to propose alternatives for backstop or its over with no deal. That would be music to his ears. Blame for no deal goes to EU and borders in Ireland, in accordance with EU law, are also attributable to EU.

Maybe EU is thinking that, while a border in Ireland is potential problem for the island of Ireland, it is offset by no border issues in Eastern Europe?

Wonder what the Supreme Court ruling is about the prorogation of Parliament? Who is paying for all these court cases which seem to produce a different result every time?

Mystery

Actually although I prefer keeping the Sm and cu, I would meet you at EFTA like Norway. Freedom of movement and goods. Plus Schengen which is more free borders than we have now. I’d go for that.

They’ve expressed dissatisfaction at us doing this though so hopefully we have some great powers of persuasion to talk then round.

excitedmumtobe87 · 19/09/2019 02:24

Ps I believe crowd funding is mostly paying for the court cases.

I do agree with you that Johnson being able to blame the EU would play into his hands. But also he’d twist it to blame them anyway.

T May too for signing the WA illegally. The Miller case law requires parliament's approval on any deal. To sign without parliament was wrong. Trying to hide the legal advice on risk that WA wording allows EU to lock UK into the CU and SM forever was also wrong.

Remainer (but wasn't allowed to vote)

Norway ++ would do me, Norway + at a pinch

BeardedMum · 19/09/2019 14:51

Norway is a member of Schengen

Brefugee · 19/09/2019 14:52

I love Schengen!

BeardedMum · 19/09/2019 15:59

Yes but the leavers wouldn’t want Schengen

Parker231 · 19/09/2019 18:34

Juncker is now saying there is a deal to be done by 31 October - wonder what has changed?

Peregrina · 19/09/2019 20:34

Is Juncker saying that or is that what the UK press is reporting?

Parker231 · 19/09/2019 20:40

Watch the interview with him on Sky. Although I’ve also seen that ROI are saying that it is unlikely they would agree to whatever is being discussed.
