The people who could be bothered to vote in the referendum voted overwhelmingly to leave the EU. & yes. I think 52 to 48 is a significant win

Good luck trying to instigate a constitutional change at your local gym on those percentages!

The way parliament chose to implement the referendum was that if Leave had won by one vote, we'd still be in this mess.

September Johnson cannot go into a pact with BXP because it will tear the Tory PP even further apart.
1/2 their candidates and voters would not support a no-deal manifesto.

frumpety · 24/09/2019 20:55

How can this parliament be legal πŸ™„ and acting lawfully when it's given its powers by the people and is acting agaisnt them?

Is it because not all of the people agree with you September and so it isn't acting against all the people ?

frumpety · 24/09/2019 21:02

Parliament should always act in the best interests of the 66 million, not just the 17.4 million. The 66 million are the majority. Those are the people, the 17.4 million are some of the people. They are a good chunk and deserve to have their voices heard, just not to the detriment of the majority.

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:05

Acting in the best will of the people is to extricate this country from the insidious grasp of the eu.

frumpety · 24/09/2019 21:09

In your opinion September Smile

frumpety · 24/09/2019 21:13

Interests trumps will September

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:16

It is in the best interest of the UK to leave the failing, bloated, in coherent political monolith that is the eu.
It's failing in every conceivable way and its much easier to jump ship now and get ourselves sorted than hang on until the bitter breakup and carnage at the end. Which Italy will bring very soon.

Parker231 · 24/09/2019 21:16

September - its not in the best interest of the UK population to leave the EU. If it was we would have already left.

jasjas1973 · 24/09/2019 21:18

Acting in the best will of the people is to extricate this country from the insidious grasp of the eu

At most, 17m out of 46m agree with your description of the EU.

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:22

Well that's voting for you.

Fewer people choose to go and vote in ge but one party wins.

Perhaps not anymore... The sitting party could ignore the ge vote and simply carry on. Because Parliament has gone.

Rouge.

twofingerstoEverything · 24/09/2019 21:23

re KennDodds' post... How do you read this:
"I would much rather my tax money was spend reducing inequality than billionaires didn't pay any tax."
and think it says:
Wow you'd rather your money went to Poland.. Than supporting poor communities here?
Talk about wilfully misconstruing and misrepresenting someone's actual words...

DustyDiamond · 24/09/2019 21:23

A one line bill is amendable. See Vernon Bogdanor on this.

Amendable after it has passed through all stages?

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:23

Rouge 🀣.

It should be blushing.

But it's also gone rogue

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:25

Two.

Kenn Dodd only presented two narrow options for the money. To Poland rather than billionaires.

No thought for money to support Poor communities here. Its why Frank field wrote his vote leave for the poor plea.

jasjas1973 · 24/09/2019 21:28

Its why Frank field wrote his vote leave for the poor plea

.....then after the vote changed his view to a Norway + option, which apparently is the same as staying in the EU.....

twofingerstoEverything · 24/09/2019 21:34

At no point, however, did KennDodd say "I would rather my tax money went to Poland.. Than supporting poor communities here?"

You were just making that up, weren't you? Did you think people wouldn't notice?

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:45

Are you implying Frank changed his blog plea?

He actually refuted his blog?

ContinuityError · 24/09/2019 21:47

DustyDiamond Go read Bogdanor and ask yourself why Johnson didn’t go for this option when it only requires a simple majority.

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 21:55

Fascinating that farage also wants Cummings sacked.

Are we going to end up with leave wanting to remain and remain wanting to leave, how much further can this political inversion go.

bellinisurge · 24/09/2019 21:57

Farage has always hated Cummings because he froze him out although used him.

DustyDiamond · 24/09/2019 22:03

DustyDiamond Go read Bogdanor and ask yourself why Johnson didn’t go for this option when it only requires a simple majority.

ContinuityError, you need to give me a specific link really - I googled him & there's lots of stuff he's written

As far as I'm aware, a one line bill is amendable as it's going through the stages of Parliament.
Once it has passed all stages & has royal assent it is no longer amendable.

DustyDiamond · 24/09/2019 22:06

As I understood it, the reason BJ didn't go for one line Bill was because opposition parties would have tacked on amendments to suit them as they have the numbers over BJ (extension, 2nd ref etc)
Fuck all to do with BJ being able to unilaterally amend a bill that has passed all stages.

Septembersunrays · 24/09/2019 22:12

What we do need is legislation to force mps to get behind ref. This must never happen again. Parliament is supposed to be checks and balance but that function is lost because we realise Parliament is full of human mps who suddenly reject democracy when a vote didn't go their way. So they are autocrats. We must have laws to stop this.

ContinuityError · 24/09/2019 22:21

DustyDiamond

Johnson didn’t go for the nothwithstanding bill because the date of the GE could be amended by the Opposition.

But equally Opposition parties weren’t going to fall for it when the Government could have tabled amendments too (and this would have been before the 21 rebels were sacked).
