Amid scenes parliament was shut down.

In an unprecedented comment the Speaker, stated it was not an ordinary prorogation and it was blatantly an attempt to stop the executive being held to account.

And now it seems a Scottish Court agree with him:
"Lord Brodie cont: "the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference"

Thus parliament must reopen. Unless the decision is overturned in a higher court.

This is constitutionally a big deal. The Queen is highly unlikely to attend a reopening, especially in this manner, due to how political it now is.

General Election campaigning has already began with parties trying to take full advantage of the fact that there are currently no rules over spending.

Dominic Cummings actively and openly campaigning for the Conservatives whilst paid as a civil servant by the tax payer is a huge breech of the Civil service code but MPs are struggling to pin the government down on this as its being obstructive.

Cummings is keen to use data to target and personalise people based on their usage of the .gov portal for Brexit. This is OK as its in the national interest apparently. Its also incredibly sinister and concerning about how this could be used against the population.

Anyway if you thought parliament closing would result in a lull in events you were very much mistaken!!

What next?

There's a subtext I'm missing here I think. I would be quite confident that a tory/brexit pact would secure a majority. Its very odd that they're so set against it...

I think a lot - a lot of "shy Tories" - the backbone of Tory Britain - would find that a step too far. For all the bluster and bravado of Boris, he knows he can't afford to piss off too many Mk.1 Tories. (While they still draw breath that is ...)

There's also a real danger it would confuse the electorate. Who as a whole don't always show they get the programme.

Finally, Boris and Cummings don't want to be beholden to anyone - it's a clash of egos. Dumping Farage and chums is also a very (dare I say it) Hitler-y thing to do.

Be curious to see how Farage and Banks strike back. Because they will. Be ready for incoming tweets from Hair Force one.

BXP hasn't been tested in a GE yet, only against EU. It isn't in the Tory's interests to let them have a wedge of their pie as a far right party. It also gives them equal credibility which Tory's think they have fought long and hard for Hmm. Ultimately BXP merger would have dissuaded more Tories to vote Tory than increased I suspect. I did think BoZoCum were probably already using donations from them though...will be interesting to see where Tory funding is coming from if not!

Hoooo · 11/09/2019 13:42

I go to bed for a bit and....

Um...

What exactly has happened?

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 13:43

BXP hasn't been tested in a GE yet, only against EU

Whereas UKIP have - and been found wanting to say the least.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 13:44

As Red has pointed out more than once, the next step is targeting the judiciary. I wonder at the public response to this as part of the "melt".

I read the Scottish Court needed to provide an injunction to enable the House to sit again? Nothing is covering this well atm.

prettybird · 11/09/2019 13:45

Joanna Cherry made the point earlier that the Inner Court of the Court of Session is a higher court that the High Court, so at the moment, the judgement of the highest court that has ruled is that the prorogation is illegal.

That will remain the case until the Supreme Court has ruled Grin. (There has also been controversy about the role of the Supreme Court overruling Scottish Law and has been since it was set up without the consent of the Scottish Government? but I will assume that there will be at least one Scottish Law Lord sitting on the panel Wink)

NoWordForFluffy · 11/09/2019 13:45

Where did you read that, JeSuis?

Basilpots · 11/09/2019 13:46

Just because they say there is no pact doesn’t mean they won’t be. Two Leave campaigns co existed.

Tory Party are straddling two camps as much as Labour.

BXP hasn't been tested in a GE yet, only against EU. It isn't in the Tory's interests to let them have a wedge of their pie as a far right party.

They’ll maybe get some pie (of the humble variety, I hope), but under FPTP they probably won’t win any seats!

squid4 · 11/09/2019 13:47

I was sort of looking forward to a day without major news events as parliament was shut down.

tobee · 11/09/2019 13:47

Been skimming this thread because have bad internet at the moment on holiday here in Devon but not seen anyone here comment on the explanation for the judgement given on Miller- Major case which basically seems to be "yes, Johnson was being devious. But that's politics!" Hmm

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 13:47

DGR Fromage was trying to throw his weight around after the visit to Ireland; show BoZoCum he will snatch the rug out from under them if they go against No Deal. Looks like they were standing on a carpet instead.

Talk about the remainers not sticking together though! This will split the vote for the next GE. However if that is after 1st Nov, who will want to win it?

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 13:48

"yes, Johnson was being devious. But that's politics!"

Devious isn't illegal. Unless you are a little person and you tangle with HMRC.

AutumnCrow · 11/09/2019 13:49

Perhaps Cummings and Johnson have had a tip off about how the investigations into Banks (and by association, Farage) are going? Result: not touching with bargepole.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 13:50

Basilpots yes, and if I were BoZo I'd be wondering how much our funding sources overlapped with BxP and why...

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 13:52

Autumncrow I have spoken before about the lack of protection BoZo must use on his bargepole. I suspect there will be traces there, if not something more sinister, after the Leave campaign.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/09/2019 13:53

I'm not sure that's right, JeSuis. My understanding (and that of my friendly barrister) is that unless the government sought to suspend the Order, it means that the HoC should sit.

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 13:53

A BOOKMAKER has slashed the odds of Scottish independence, making it the clear favourite in a future referendum.

Irish bookie BoyleSports announced it had cut the odds on more Scots backing Yes than No in indyref2 from 5/6 to 8/11.

The betting firm is giving even odds for the likelihood of a No vote in a future referendum on Scottish independence.

A spokesperson for BoyleSports, Lawrence Lyons, told our sister paper The Herald: “Calls are growing for a second referendum in Scotland and supporters of the status quo have plenty to be concerned about according to the bets we’re seeing.

"The odds are now clearly in favour of a vote for independence and we have no choice but to make it an odds-on prospect should the vote materialise.”

That vote ended with Scots rejecting independence by 55% to 45%. However, various polls since have shown a narrowing of the gap, with one poll in August – commissioned by Lord Ashcroft – putting Yes in the lead.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 13:55

NoWord that is interesting! I'd hope so but at the moment reporting doesn't seem to be keeping up with what is happening well. I've no access to a television atm but did someone say MP's are gathered and hoping to sit?

0lga · 11/09/2019 13:55

PMK

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 13:58

Off on a tangent, but which castle does Cumming's wife's family own? Is it south of the border?

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 14:01

Seems to be a movement on Twitter for the Welsh Govt to release Yellowhammer as they have seen it...

📺: The #Yellowhammer report has been shared with the Welsh Govt on a confidential basis & cannot be shared with the people of Wales.

Its an affront to the Welsh public that the UK Govt is hiding the truth about a #NoDealBrexit

My constituents in #Gower need this information!

But are they English enough ? Or even Welsh enough ?
