Westminstenders: "I don't give a flying flamingo"

Amid scenes parliament was shut down.

In an unprecedented comment the Speaker, stated it was not an ordinary prorogation and it was blatantly an attempt to stop the executive being held to account.

And now it seems a Scottish Court agree with him:
"Lord Brodie cont: "the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference"

Thus parliament must reopen. Unless the decision is overturned in a higher court.

This is constitutionally a big deal. The Queen is highly unlikely to attend a reopening, especially in this manner, due to how political it now is.

General Election campaigning has already began with parties trying to take full advantage of the fact that there are currently no rules over spending.

Dominic Cummings actively and openly campaigning for the Conservatives whilst paid as a civil servant by the tax payer is a huge breech of the Civil service code but MPs are struggling to pin the government down on this as its being obstructive.

Cummings is keen to use data to target and personalise people based on their usage of the .gov portal for Brexit. This is OK as its in the national interest apparently. Its also incredibly sinister and concerning about how this could be used against the population.

Anyway if you thought parliament closing would result in a lull in events you were very much mistaken!!

What next?

Cameron won a unexpected victory with only one Scottish Conservative MP.

Yes, but May did need those 12 MPs when she botched her election. The DUP wouldn't have been enough without them.

Sostenueto · 11/09/2019 12:16

Well great news but I'm not cheering just yet until Supreme court decision. Looks like both Scottish and English cases will be heard together. Possibly on the 17th.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 12:17

dad I hope the Supreme Court don't overturn this,

but if they do, at least a (currently) British court has ruled the govt is behaving illegally.

Yes, overturning it might be another reason for Scots to protest, but they have already been handed so many of those by Brexit

e.g. Indy ref lies, being outvoted by England in the EU ref, being forced to accept Trident / missiles, frequent insults in the media ....

Every govt cockup, every broken promise, every time the govt arrogantly breaks the law for party political reasons ....

I know the govt can't all be SNP agents, but they might as well be !

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 12:17

I understand why everyone's celebrating this as a big blow to the Tories, but isn't anyone worried that the Supreme Court will overturn this, giving Boris the last laugh, while also creating an extra reason for Scots to protest that they should be allowed another IndyRef?

If the Supreme Court effectively says that Scottish law is invalid, might it not then strike at the acts of Union by which Scotland is part of the Union ?

Anyway, we're fortunate to have such fundamental confusion at a time when economic pressures would prefer a long period of stability and certainty to allow investment.

Bit of a bind for the Law & Order party now ? If nothing else, Brexiteers have really done a number on the Tories. You'd think they'd have twigged by now.

Unattributable govt. sources have denied that unattributal govt. sources questioned the impartiality of the Scottish courts.

Although this is scary within the Brexit agenda but its a beautiful beautiful thing watching this government collapse like a flan in a cupboard

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

Former No10 chief of staff.

Westminster has gone from relative peace to weapons-grade clusterf in a matter of seconds.

Gavin Barwell@GavinBarwell

This is a very unwise road for a party that believes in

a) the Union and
b) the rule of law

to go down

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

Sources in No10 now hitting back at the Scottish judges, suggesting they are politically biased:
"We note that last week the High Court in London did not rule that prorogation was unlawful.
The legal activists choose the Scottish courts for a reason".

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 12:27

Dadadad - Scottish Court has said it was nullified. So until Supreme gets together and rules again, we are back in HoC.

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 12:27

Unattributable govt. sources have denied that unattributal govt. sources questioned the impartiality of the Scottish courts.

Be interesting if that's the tack they use if it comes to SCOTUK (has it been appealed yet ?)

Can someone please ask the supreme court to witness summons Boris Johnson and Cummings

The supreme court is televised and we could all do with some entertainment
