Westminstenders: "I don't give a flying flamingo"

Amid scenes parliament was shut down.

In an unprecedented comment the Speaker, stated it was not an ordinary prorogation and it was blatantly an attempt to stop the executive being held to account.

And now it seems a Scottish Court agree with him:
"Lord Brodie cont: "the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference"

Thus parliament must reopen. Unless the decision is overturned in a higher court.

This is constitutionally a big deal. The Queen is highly unlikely to attend a reopening, especially in this manner, due to how political it now is.

General Election campaigning has already began with parties trying to take full advantage of the fact that there are currently no rules over spending.

Dominic Cummings actively and openly campaigning for the Conservatives whilst paid as a civil servant by the tax payer is a huge breech of the Civil service code but MPs are struggling to pin the government down on this as its being obstructive.

Cummings is keen to use data to target and personalise people based on their usage of the .gov portal for Brexit. This is OK as its in the national interest apparently. Its also incredibly sinister and concerning about how this could be used against the population.

Anyway if you thought parliament closing would result in a lull in events you were very much mistaken!!

What next?

Am considering taking a 3 month trip to the other side of the world. If I tell the school dd won't be in from mid-October, how long legally am I allowed to have her out of the school? If this all goes the way we fear I doubt they will care much, but if I was in normal times? She's always had 98% attendance if that matters.

thecatfromjapan · 12/09/2019 00:57

Mind you, £8.3 billion is a lot of money. So there's a powerful incentive there not to even try for the role of WA saviour.

It really is unbelievably dire.

thecatfromjapan · 12/09/2019 01:00

JeSuis You're allowed 2 weeks.

Would your school be able to fill her place?

Legally, you could say you're home-schooling, rather than taking a holiday. Legally, you then only have to provide education in some form.

But the school would fill her place, leaving you to find another school upon return.

However, not all schools have the same pressure on places.

JeSuisPoulet · 12/09/2019 01:05

Yes thecat it is a very good state school with a waiting list Sad
I almost wish they would show us the real effects so I could plan shit like this without worrying they'll get me for trying to protect my child [anger]

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2019 01:07

Whatever red lines she dropped, any WA would still only have a legally non-binding future framework for a trade deal

Our problem is that the likely future government after a GE is an authoritarian hard right party

Basically, you want a WA that will stop voters choosing the hard right afterwards, for the negotiations
No WA can fix that

If it was a cuddly centrist party likely to win, noone would be worried about the WA

JeSuisPoulet · 12/09/2019 01:15

Need to admit my anxiety is getting the best of me tonight and try to sleep. Been a pretty shitty day tbh. So sorry to all of you worrying about meds and those unable to consider escape plans Flowers. It's so hard to know what to actually do Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2019 01:18

We are in the "Burning hair" scenario - you certainly don't praise one of the arsonists,
but don't waste time yelling at him for being an evil bastard, either

Just grab the damn fire extinguisher

JeSuisPoulet · 12/09/2019 01:19

And I bet CumFace's operation early Nov is in the Bahamas and will take months Angry Night all.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2019 01:27

Jesuis Personally, I'd wait and see what happens
but use the time to prepare absolutely everything in case things get bad enough for you to want to take that trip

You don't know when that would be, even if No Deal happens on schedule, without an extension

imo, although the first few weeks may indeed be dodgy, the worst effects would be after 6 months or more, if the givt has refused to cave in
That's when we might see a balance of payments crisis, Sterling crash, unemployment rising

Depends how many things happen the govt didn't expect, or how many things happen at once
It might just be like a worse case of the 2008 financial crash

Apileofballyhoo · 12/09/2019 01:37

Just caught up. Had v busy day. Nothing to add. I wish somebody could stand up and say how ridiculous it all is and cancel it without being accused of being a Remainer.

Frankiestein402 · 12/09/2019 01:38

I still believe that a new WA can be negotiated by a new PM and govt with a CU/SM

? The WA sets out how the status quo will be maintained for the duration of the transition period - ie it includes CU/SM until end of transition - it doesn't actually need to change.

The WA neither mandates nor precludes CU/SM after transition, the non legally binding PD is where that would be - it doesn't really matter whether its there or not - the existing WA will support the softest BRINO and as hard a brexit as can be achieved without stuffing the GFA

JeSuisPoulet · 12/09/2019 01:40

I'm worried about flu/snow/traffic/schooling/looters/rioters mainly. I don't know whether to move my dad in with us as he lives rurally. I'm also worried if things get bad people will all be trying to get out and cause logjams. If we have outbreaks other countries may not let us in.
OK, sleep needed now, not helping myself.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2019 01:50

JeSuis We might get the WA, in which case things like trade would continue as if we are in the EU,
for the transition period, which would probably be extended.

We would stay like that for some years, at least

So, we've hope 💐

placemats · 12/09/2019 03:25

I've woken up early and can't get back to sleep.

I went to get a flu jab yesterday and was asked my age. Then I was told that the jab was reserved for over 65s only at the moment. I'm grateful for not being mistaken for being over 65 but I would like a flu jab nonetheless. I'm paying for it!

Dominic Grieve on Boris Johnson and if he was lying to the Queen

I would love to know what the scandal is.

ArmchairTheatre · 12/09/2019 05:33

Type1 diabetic here...I'm very worried...it's all very well others saying I will be ok....but you don't have to live with my condition, I'm insulin dependent. I cannot live for 3 days without insulin. It will put me into DKA ,(diabetic ketoacidosis) on day one without insulin. Not to mention potassium, electrolytes and hydration fluids. Ffs!

Stillfunny · 12/09/2019 05:45

I wonder how history will reflect these times we are going through? With Trump and Boris , it truly is a crazy life we are living. Two bullies trying to force their agendas on the world.
I would love to be Teresa May right now.

ArmchairTheatre · 12/09/2019 05:56

I can't bloody believe it's taken me 3 fucking years to get an insulin pump (Accu-Check insight) only to be told because it's manufactured in Germany I won't be able to get supplies and the pump carts ( novo pumpcarts) Ffs! Thanks Bojo! I'm bloody making an effigy of you

bellinisurge · 12/09/2019 06:06

Just posted on another thread that my normally cult loving local FB page and the comments section of my local MPs Yellowhammer post have taken a different turn overnight.
There are still a few cult members posting but the vast majority of responses or other posts are of the " Are you on glue?" variety. The demographic who would be disproportionately affected are in my area in large numbers.
It actually gave me some hope that we would get popular support for a WA this time. I'd prefer a border in the sea type thing but whatever saves GFA is fine by me.
Sometimes the only way to pull people out of a cult is to shock them.
I'm clutching that straw today.

LarkDescending · 12/09/2019 06:18

placemats the flu jab designed for under-65s is slightly delayed this year due to a late decision on what strains to include. It is a different formulation from the over-65s’ one which contains an adjuvant. In my area it is becoming available in high street pharmacies from about 23 September.

Flu jab supplies may become yet another Brexit issue - Guardian link

NoWordForFluffy · 12/09/2019 06:21

So could Kinnock be a godsend in that the WA needs to come back? (When / in what circumstance does it have to come back?)

Mother, I still agree with you re the WA, but it doesn't appear to hold popular opinion.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/09/2019 06:21

It's not just delayed, there are also restricted quantities available before Brexit.

NoWordForFluffy · 12/09/2019 06:22

The kids' flu vaccination at school is on 15 October this year. Which is earlier than normal.

Mistigri · 12/09/2019 06:25

I went to get a flu jab yesterday and was asked my age. Then I was told that the jab was reserved for over 65s only at the moment. I'm grateful for not being mistaken for being over 65 but I would like a flu jab nonetheless. I'm paying for it!

This might not be strictly Brexit related as it is very early in the flu jab season and I believe there was a delay to manufacturing of the vaccine this year (it has changed versus the Southern Hemisphere flu vaccine).

The caveat, of course, is that the bloody disinformation and Cambridge Analytica-style fear-based psyops crap would have to be contained. And I really don't know how one achieves that.

I am against a ref in the current environment for this reason. I don't know how you get anything like a constructive environment for a referendum. Electoral law has no teeth, one side has no scruples whatsoever, and the other side still has a touching and rather naive faith in the rule of law.

LarkDescending · 12/09/2019 06:31

Children aged 2-17 get live attenuated vaccine, different from the adult ones (under 65 & over 65). I imagine this is being prioritised pre- 31 October, as the over 65s’ one certainly is.

QueenOfThorns · 12/09/2019 06:34

My DD is also having her flu vaccination on 15 October, I was happy to see that it’s before B Day.

Thanks to everyone on this thread who answers my questions! I hate not knowing what’s going on, so you’re really helping me to cope with all this.
