Westminstenders: "I don't give a flying flamingo"

Amid scenes parliament was shut down.

In an unprecedented comment the Speaker, stated it was not an ordinary prorogation and it was blatantly an attempt to stop the executive being held to account.

And now it seems a Scottish Court agree with him:
"Lord Brodie cont: "the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference"

Thus parliament must reopen. Unless the decision is overturned in a higher court.

This is constitutionally a big deal. The Queen is highly unlikely to attend a reopening, especially in this manner, due to how political it now is.

General Election campaigning has already began with parties trying to take full advantage of the fact that there are currently no rules over spending.

Dominic Cummings actively and openly campaigning for the Conservatives whilst paid as a civil servant by the tax payer is a huge breech of the Civil service code but MPs are struggling to pin the government down on this as its being obstructive.

Cummings is keen to use data to target and personalise people based on their usage of the .gov portal for Brexit. This is OK as its in the national interest apparently. Its also incredibly sinister and concerning about how this could be used against the population.

Anyway if you thought parliament closing would result in a lull in events you were very much mistaken!!

What next?

Exactly as I thought / was advised. They've not asked the Court to suspend the decision pending the SC judgment, therefore as it stands, the prorogation isn't legal.

FractalChaos · 11/09/2019 17:57

Interesting bit from Miller at 16.35 on that guardian link that says MPs have to go resume duties. Maybe thats why Bercow was going into the HoC?

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/11/nigel-farage-wont-be-allowed-anywhere-near-government-say-tories

The new app Pericles, inspired by technology used by Donald Trump, has been launched by the Brexit party, which enables activists to access the electoral register.

Richard Tice, the Brexit party’s chairman and an MEP, said:

“You can go into a constituency, click on a street, go in and you know who is on the electoral roll there and see it on a map
and that way we can register their interest, a yes, no or maybe.
That will help us also on the actual election day in terms of getting out the vote.

“This is a new piece of technology, no one else in the political system in the UK has this and this is what we’ve been doing over the summer.”

FractalChaos · 11/09/2019 18:02

BCF that is fucking scary!

TheMShip · 11/09/2019 18:02

They also couldn’t explain why I hadn’t had a response to my letter to
@marksedwill
re #Cummings - said they had had “a lot of correspondence” - I pointed out I hadn’t even had an acknowledgement!

I also was told they had “a room” of people working on the #Yellowhammer disclosure

Boris PMQs Facebook link

The best part is all the insults scrolling past.

BestIsWest · 11/09/2019 18:08

Just failed to get my HRT patches. Dr has given me a month’s tablets instead but was very upset. He is very concerned for his patients.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/09/2019 18:11

If the prorogation isn’t legal; surely it means that all the Bills which were still WIP, can just be continued, such as the divorce bill etc.
However, if there is an election; is that a new parliamentary session? ( I had never paid that much attention before so not sure. All bills default to zero; bit of a waste of time).

RedToothBrush · 11/09/2019 18:11

I know the LDs had an unsophisticated web system for logging voter interest.

The big thing is the sheer amount of door knocking you need to do to get the data inputted.

How long do you think it takes to door knock 100 houses?

So whilst it sounds scary, it's just a souped up version of what other parties already have.

And it's got its limitations too.

FGS, it's like waiting for the carefully redacted Mueller Report.

One-page letter of "summary" by the political appointee was all we got for months.

Then redacted report once the headlines had died down.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/09/2019 18:15

The LDs have something called Mini Van which their canvassers update in real time to a) log preference and b) prevent two visits to the same house.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 18:16

😂

Ian Dunt@IanDunt

Is there some kind of rule that Boris Johnson has to fail really badly at least once a day.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 18:17

BCF that's horrific! Shock I thought the vote was meant to be legally private? Sorry, brain fart moment where I can't think of the right word.

My friend's mum has just been sectioned due to her medication changes so I am going to disappear into some Wine. My friend said the ward was very chaotic with paramedics running in and out and people trying to escape. It's testing her own MH thinking that her mum is stuck there Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 18:19

Meanwhile, view from Brussels - and germany - on the "negotiations":
"Much ado about nothing"

Fabian Zuleeg@FabianZuleeg

...In addition, I doubt UKG is serious about any of this - they want to show they are negotiating but without really compromising.

And even if they did, would BJ command a majority in HoC?
Much ado about nothing

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 18:22

Don't worry, poulet The vote is indeed private

afaik, the App is just a very sophisticated means to collect and sort all the party's data for each voter,
so that they can be targeted appropriately

It's apparently based on Trump's much-vaunted App, which as supposed to have helped his campaign in targeting on the ground

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 18:22

That BoZo link is also scary as hell - "I've offered twice an election for them to take"...you are meant to be saying you AREN'T authoritarian Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 18:22

The problem comes if the Tories can also download and add what data you gave the govt portal ....

JustAnotherPoster00 · 11/09/2019 18:41

The LDs have something called Mini Van

After the 2015 election they didnt have enough MP's to fill 1 Grin Grin

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 11/09/2019 18:42

Wow, the Lib Dems are on a mission. I've had a letter through the post this week and then two leaflets delivered tonight. Our previous councillor is an abusive, misogynistic arsehole and gives me the rage whenever I see him. We currently have a new Lib Dem councillor. I don't know what she's like but I'm pretty sure she's not making the female Green Party candidate feel intimidated and unsafe. Tories don't tend to campaign here but labour do. I shall look forward to seeing all the bumpf to compare them.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 18:43

UK's new vision was laid out in Brussels www.theguardian.com/world/2019/sep/11/angela-merkel-stresses-danger-of-britain-becoming-singapore-on-thames-no-deal

Merkel also warned of the economic threat that the UK could pose. Johnson had privately told EU diplomats during his time as foreign secretary of his desire to build a “buccaneering” Britain, which has been seen as an indication of his plan to recast the UK as a low-tax and low-regulation state.

Merkel’s comments indicate the difficulty that the British government will face in striking what it has described as a “best in class” free trade deal if it fails to match EU standards on goods, workers’ rights, tax and the environment, among others.

EU sources have said that the UK will need to sign up to more onerous, level playing-field obligations than Canada due to the UK’s proximity and the size of its economy.

That's a pretty obvious bit of technology.
Mapping your voters and getting them out.

BirdandSparrow · 11/09/2019 18:52

Are they likely to release the yellow hammer docs, do we think?
