Amid scenes parliament was shut down.

In an unprecedented comment the Speaker, stated it was not an ordinary prorogation and it was blatantly an attempt to stop the executive being held to account.

And now it seems a Scottish Court agree with him:
"Lord Brodie cont: "the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference"

Thus parliament must reopen. Unless the decision is overturned in a higher court.

This is constitutionally a big deal. The Queen is highly unlikely to attend a reopening, especially in this manner, due to how political it now is.

General Election campaigning has already began with parties trying to take full advantage of the fact that there are currently no rules over spending.

Dominic Cummings actively and openly campaigning for the Conservatives whilst paid as a civil servant by the tax payer is a huge breech of the Civil service code but MPs are struggling to pin the government down on this as its being obstructive.

Cummings is keen to use data to target and personalise people based on their usage of the .gov portal for Brexit. This is OK as its in the national interest apparently. Its also incredibly sinister and concerning about how this could be used against the population.

Anyway if you thought parliament closing would result in a lull in events you were very much mistaken!!

What next?

Hmm
BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 16:56

From Erskine May, only the Queen can recall parliament during its prorogation - the PM cannot do so directly

Of course, HMQ never normally makes such decision herself, but is "advised" or politely told what to do, by advisors

Would these be the same ones, e.g. PM and JRM, who advised her wrongly before ?

What a horror.

Anyone got a link? I'm curious.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 17:01

Phew, back!
Someone will have to transcribe from fb as I left yesterday. As I said, going to become a Leaver bubble Hmm

Found it interesting that upthread there was mention in France of how populist governments aren't organised enough to actually govern. If they can see how populist we have become it's a world view IMO. Also we might actually be doing Europe the biggest favour in our lives as an island member of theirs by showing up the populists (we've already taken one for the team dissuading other -exits).

DarlingNikita · 11/09/2019 17:01

It's OK, I've found it. Some of the comments are quite funny.

Which is basically the accused getting to mark their own homework.

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 17:09

Surely at 90 she could abdicate without too much of a quarrel?

DGR I was in a pushchair when the Hyde Park bomb went off. My mum had left shortly beforehand and fortunately we had got far enough away not to be involved. I've told my dd that story and she marvels often at how I am still here meaning that she is now here. She was also the only kid in her class who named all political parties after being asked by the teacher (she said Brexit Party and Independence Party - which frankly even I had forgotten about Blush). I'll let her off the BxP not strictly being a party for that Wink

prettybird · 11/09/2019 17:10

He's late. Hmm

Colour me surprisedGrin

NoWordForFluffy · 11/09/2019 17:12

With regards to following the law to the letter (channeling my inner Ted Hastings!), we don't have written laws for the civil courts. It's common law, so based on case law and interpretation of statutes in light of the evidence before the Court.

I would think that the Scottish Court's decision wouldn't be undermined lightly. It'll be 5 judges I think, though. A huge number of judicial hours going into this.

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 17:14

Surely at 90 she could abdicate without too much of a quarrel?

However it's frequently been reported that she regards reigning as a "sacred duty" and isn't about to drop it when it suits her.

Remember she is only Queen because her uncle almost ended the Monarchy in the 1930s.

I bet she wishes Winston were still around to advise her. He'd be horrified at what has happened since he's been gone.

Cailleach1 · 11/09/2019 17:17

A people's PMQ? After shutting down parliament. Oh, well. Rule by Facebook. Will everyone's info be harvested or whatever the term is?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/09/2019 17:17

So those questions weren’t cherry picked at all...

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 17:25

WInston's GS is a good pal of her eldest

JeSuisPoulet · 11/09/2019 17:28

How to the older population and tech shy feel about being ignored when it comes to asking PMQ Hmm
Although I can't see it as coming off too well if the Q's had to be so obviously rigged? Can someone transcribe or copy a link?

youllhavehadyourtea · 11/09/2019 17:31

It had the same vibe as a question and answer session between Ordinary Russians and Putin.

DGRossetti · 11/09/2019 17:34

How to the older population and tech shy feel about being ignored when it comes to asking PMQ

grateful ? By definition Boris can't reach them on facebook.

OublietteBravo · 11/09/2019 17:40

PMK - can’t believe I’ve already missed 1/3 of a thread. I was busy. I worked a 9 hour day with only two 10 min breaks today.

BirdandSparrow · 11/09/2019 17:42

The Guardian online has at least some of the questions from the FB PMQ.

And I thought it was going to be a quiet few weeks...

Can someone tell me where to look on twitter for the MP's protesting outside HoC, please? And what is Bercow doing now after going into the HoC earlier?

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2019 17:52

Queenie will not abidicate. Abdication is a shameful act. She may decide to put her feet up and declare a regency so she can stay home and watch the racing channel.
