The current clusterfuck is purely political

Correct. EU pretending to support the β€œno border on the island of Ireland”, but in reality all they are interested in is protecting the single market and customs revenue.

EU secretly hopes that the border issues in Ireland result in Brexit being cancelled. There is a very humorous post on the β€œDear Brussels” thread that makes that point.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 14:24

Now WTO rules to have control over your economic area don't apply to the UK either. We are sooooooo exceptional πŸ˜‚

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 14:26

There is humorous post about it on that thread. Your nonsense is there in abundance, though.

MysteryTripAgain · 09/09/2019 14:29

Who said that? Might end up with two borders. Point is that Ireland will have to install a border in accordance with EU law regardless of what the adjoining third country does.

Parker231 · 09/09/2019 14:35

News reports are stating that the Brexit Secretary is blaming the EU for lack of progress. I thought that Johnson said when he met with Merkel that he would come back with proposals. The EU are saying that nothing new has been put forward.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 14:39

You are clearly saying we don't need to put up a border @MysteryTripAgain . But we do. If we No Deal and want to trade under WTO rules.

DustyDiamond · 09/09/2019 14:40

All EU have to do is remove backstop.
That has been obvious since last year.

EU aided by Brexit-blocking MPs have brought us to this point.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 14:41

Oh dear. Another one who doesn't give a shit about NI unless it can be used as a pretend reason for "holding the line".

time4chocolate · 09/09/2019 14:52

Nothing new put forward or nothing new put forward that the EU deem acceptable.

It’s unlikely we can negotiate with the EU any further than what we were given in the WA. Brexit secretaries have tried and failed and moved on, and we are onto our second PM.

Under the β€˜no deal’ bill the PM will be required to meet/report to parliament every 28 days on future negotiations!! They’ll be very short meetings I would imagineWink

Parker if you are a Belgian working in the UK did you have a vote in the EU Ref in 2016? Would you have a vote in a UK GE or 2nd Ref?

My neighbour is Belgian but has UK citizenship. Her view is that she is fine either way and so it is a decision for those more affected to make. She had me in stitches explaining her trip to the Belgian consulate to renew her passport. The nice young Belgian refused to speak English. He insisted on French. She decided on Flemish. He called for a translator rather than back down. My neighbour is fluent in English, French, Flemish and German. Sadly her interlocutor was only fluent in English and French. Grin Brew Cake

My MiL is French / British. She voted Leave primarily because she is not a fan of the state of French / EU politics.

For those patiently explaining the difference between "in Government" and "in Parliament". I have a question. Who is the Government if Parliament is dictating to the PM and his cabinet? If they refuse to unseat Boris with a VoNC and GE then I wonder if they can in fact force the Government to exercise its prerogative powers in a certain way? The Benn Bill may in fact be ultra vires in this scenario.

EU aided by Brexit-blocking MPs have brought us to this point

So they can one day become EU Commissioners and get all the perks that go with it

Parker231 · 09/09/2019 15:01

Howabout - I didn’t have a vote as I don’t have UK citizenship. I understand your comments about the different languages. My DH is French Canadian. Our DC’s grew up trilingual with me speaking to them in Flemish, DH in French and English at school. DD is doing languages at Uni, she is fluent in six languages now and hopes to work for the EU.

I would have voted Remain if I’d had the vote.

time4chocolate · 09/09/2019 15:02

Excellent question howabout

Could it be a case of cake and eat it Grin

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 15:04

Broken link @MysteryTripAgain . What a surprise.

jasjas1973 · 09/09/2019 15:04

Jesus wept... all 329 are potential EU commissionaires? even more ridiculous when as we leave the EU, the UK wont have any.

Where does MN get these posters from ?

Parker231 · 09/09/2019 15:06

Interesting afternoon in the Commons - from the Guardian

Two MPs make applications for emergency debates under standing order 24. They are Dominic Grieve, the Tory pro-European, and Jeremy Corbyn. Taking advantage of the Speaker’s decision to allow SO24 motions to be used not just for neutral motions (ie, ones with no practical effect), Grieve has used the process to table a β€œhumble address” that, if passed, forces the government to release written material. And he is asking for not just one batch of material, but two: all private correspondence relating to the decision to prorogue parliament, and the Operation Yellowhammer government no-deal planning documents. Corbyn’s motion is about the rule of law, but I have not seen the text yet.

The Speaker will have to decide whether to accept one or both motions. Given the level of anger in the Commons about the prorogation decision, it is quite likely both will be allowed.

jasjas1973 · 09/09/2019 15:07

There has to be a border.

As the UK diverges from EU standards, their consumers will demand to be protected from for example Hormone treated beef.

Equally, businesses will want to limit cheaper products coming into NI.

MysteryTripAgain · 09/09/2019 15:14

As the UK diverges from EU standards, their consumers will demand to be protected from for example Hormone treated beef

UK will not prevent EU from installing a border.

MysteryTripAgain · 09/09/2019 15:16

Broken link @MysteryTripAgain . What a surprise

Article in the Irish Times 25 Nov 2018

jasjas1973 · 09/09/2019 15:21

But it will then be UK actions that cause a border... or are you saying EU families should eat the shit we wish to import?

What will NI business demand to counter cheaper EU produce and goods hitting profits? costing jobs.

MysteryTripAgain · 09/09/2019 15:26

But it will then be UK actions that cause a border... or are you saying EU families should eat the shit we wish to import

If Ireland wants to prevent food products that don't meet EU standards from crossing over from NI, then they will have to install a border like those in Eastern European.

jasjas1973 · 09/09/2019 15:34

Yes Mystery, i think we get that.

Whatever border arrangements there are at Dover, there will be in NI/ROI, to protect both economic zones.

The consequences of that will be on Cameron for not considering this & the brexitiers

@continuityerror

You might want to post page 36 as well.

The pages you have selected state what the best outcome would be, but they do not state they are the only allowable outcomes
