Motion D: β€˜common market 2.0’ – defeated
Defeated by 282 to 261, a majority of 21

Common market 2.0 included permanent customs union iirc (I may be mistaken).

That's why leave MPs were against it.

The EFTA/EEA option was comprehensively rejected even though it was & is the most pragmatic (a time limited CU could have been tacked on to it to enable smooth transition)

Labour voted against it because it didn't involve permanent CU (again, iirc, I may be misremembering), but I've no idea why the ERG dickheads were against it.

MysteryTripAgain · 13/09/2019 13:46

@time4fourbeers.

Hopefully, as it is Friday afternoon your lunch was not only food, but some alcohol too.

Nothing has changed on MN. Still a nucleus of members who think that MN is the sole property of remain supporters clutching at straws. The general theme seems to be that if a leave supporter makes a typo in their post it proves that Brexit should be cancelled.

Those posters from NI or ROI seem very convinced that their personal opinion is law and the rest of the universe is obliged to agree. While I have sympathy for those who lived through the period known as the troubles, I can’t convince myself that the border conundrum should deny 17.4 million votes to leave the EU

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 13:49

If you offer Bear a lunchtime drink and suggest bringing back WA, she might throw it at you.πŸ˜‚

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 13:51

@MysteryTripAgain , I'm not from ROI or NI. Protecting GFA isn't a niche issue. Despite efforts to downplay its significance.
It is why we are not out yet.

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 13:54

and a lunchtime wine for Bear

Thanks time - I need it! πŸ˜‚

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 13:56

Was just wondering, if the original WA was bought back (with or without tweaks) where would labour MPs stand on it now? Would they be willing to vote it through?

If they call it the WA - no chance

If they call it something else but it’s still the same thing - possibly

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 13:56

So if someone suggests bringing back WA and offers you a drink, you don't jump on them. Hmmm. Interesting.

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:00

The general theme seems to be that if a leave supporter makes a typo in their post it proves that Brexit should be cancelled.

mystery you’ve said that before and it was nonsense then

The discussion is somewhat more advanced than that even if you find it necessary to play the victim

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:01

Mystery, your mistake was not offering booze.

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:02

So if someone suggests bringing back WA and offers you a drink, you don't jump on them. Hmmm. Interesting.

time asked a theoretical question about the WA - you harp on about the same thing all the time as if it’s something none of us have ever considered before - there is a difference

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:02

OMG, you’re actually being childish enough to think it’s about the wine

πŸ€”

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:03

I have pretty much suggested the same as time. And said that enough Labour MPs would support it. Earlier today you described WA as radioactive.
You aren't really very consistent, are you?

MysteryTripAgain · 13/09/2019 14:06

mystery you’ve said that before and it was nonsense then

So why the point scoring among remain supporters?

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:06

Why the assuming that we are all still for Remain?

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:07

Earlier today you described WA as radioactive.
You aren't really very consistent, are you?

No, yet again you’re only reading what you want to read

I said that if it was called the WA and badged as the same thing there’s no chance of it going through

If it could be spun as something else, because at the end of the day it’s content will have to be agreed at some point anyway, there’s a possibility that enough MPs would support it

What is inconsistent about that?

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:08

So why the point scoring among remain supporters?

Not sure what point scoring you’re on about?

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:08

And I have said that a rebranded WA to protect GFA (which is what WA did) would get enough cross bench support so that DUP/ERG vote didn't matter. I said that countless times.

MysteryTripAgain · 13/09/2019 14:11

Why the assuming that we are all still for Remain

The assumption is the opposite. That’s why opposition MPs have dropped logs into their underwear since 23 June 2016.

Vote was to leave the EU. No evidence ever presented that proves that people have changed their minds. Hence remain MPs don’t want an election

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:14

And I have said that a rebranded WA to protect GFA (which is what WA did) would get enough cross bench support so that DUP/ERG vote didn't matter. I said that countless times.

No, you’ve always spoken of changing the WA so it has an NI only backstop

I’m talking about a fudge where nothing changes except the name and a lot of spin.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:17

Jesus Christ, that is exactly what I have been saying. If there is an acceptable all UK version of a rebranded WA, so be it. I don't care. All the Leavers were getting exercised about being in the customs union under WA so I suggested pulling it back to NI. It was made all UK to protect the finer feelings of the DUP who rejected it anyway.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:22

I lobbied on here for WA every single time it hit Parliament. To protect GFA. Leavers were triggered by it so I fucking compromised over the thing they simultaneously care and don't care about- NI.

howabout · 13/09/2019 14:39

Hard hat on and here goes Wine

I think, and have done since Boris took over, that his plan is to get a Deal which is the Canada + version of the WA - this necessitates dumping the Backstop as that is the mechanism to back UK into CU and SM permanently.
OR
No Deal which in fact morphs into the above once everyone finally smells the coffee.

Which eventuality we get depends on EU and Parliament but at this point Revoke looks like the only Remain option, especially with LibDems and SNP scenting victory (or more accurately capitalising on their USPs and protecting their flanks from each other)

The ERG only ever supported the WA under duress and therefore the total who would vote against from them is closer to 100 than the 35(?)ish so-called Spartans. The DUP would be unlikely to want to look "weaker" on this than the ERG.

The Labour Party are as ever caught in the middle. The WA is the least popular option if the alternatives are No Deal / Remain or WA. They cannot afford to pivot to WA without losing shedloads more support to the LibDems.

There were, according to Caroline Flint, about 40 Labour MPs prepared to back the WA. However that is nowhere enough and now we are where we are the political cost of them doing so would be much higher.

Chin chin time Wine

PS as a Lexiter the WA is my worst of all options but the "Boris Deal" I outlined above would be acceptable - others I follow agree (still does not make us Tories / fascists etc etc etc). Therefore Labour stymieing this sort of Deal would be another nail in their coffin.

jasjas1973 · 13/09/2019 14:41

Common market 2.0 included permanent customs union iirc (I may be mistaken)
That's why leave MPs were against it

Leave MPs are against anything that remotely ties us to the EU, they won't even accept EU standards, instead insisting on mutual recognition... like that s ever going to happen!

Negotiating a FTA is going to prove a nightmare of epic proportions if the Cons/Bxp are in power.

Songsofexperience · 13/09/2019 14:51

but I've no idea why the ERG dickheads were against it.

The ERG won't want a customs union (even time limited) as it prevents a FTA with the US (otherwise known as the USUKA)

Bearbehind · 13/09/2019 14:53

Negotiating a FTA is going to prove a nightmare of epic proportions if the Cons/Bxp are in power.

Agreed - which is why even the WA or β€˜the document formerly known as the WA’ is likely to just be more endless can kicking
