Lord Hope is retired Depute Head of the Supreme Court and a Scottish judge.

AuldAlliance · 11/09/2019 21:25

Never mind what I like.
What do you mean?
If you're going to make threatening remarks about the judiciary, the least you can do is clarify their meaning when asked.

BunchMunch · 11/09/2019 21:31

BelleHathor
Great post, very interesting. Doesn't surprise me in the least about Tony Blair - obvs still hoping to be EU President one day.

howabout · 11/09/2019 21:34

Is Yellowhammer not just akin to a Disaster Recovery Plan? You think up as many almost unimaginably bad outcomes as you can happening all at once and come up with contingencies. That is my understanding and so it doesn't really bother or interest me that much. Why? Because most of the scenarios are not likely and political intervention can avert them all.

Are we really saying we think either side of the Channel would sit on their hands while people in the UK starve or go short of vital medicine? There would be public outcry if that was our attitude to the recent hurricane victims in the Bahamas. So the idea that the EU would treat the UK in this way seems implausible (although their record in Greece isn't great)

cba to read it so open to catastrophe correction.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 11/09/2019 21:40

Why aren't you saying some shit like " we need a Deal "?
Happy to have a deal but we do have to leave either way.

You actually think that Yellowhammer makes a good case for No Deal?
You think leaving in 10 years time will be easier?

If you're going to make threatening remarks about the judiciary, the least you can do is clarify their meaning when asked
Just for clarity, nothing I have said is intended to be threatening (in a bad way).

Parker231 · 11/09/2019 21:40

The Project Yellowhammer report has been backed up by experts - ie the leading supermarkets warning of problems and medical experts mocked by JRM for whistle blowing about the risks.

howabout · 11/09/2019 21:43

Don't disagree Parker. Experts pointing out all conceivable bad outcomes as opposed to anything remotely likely.

Mistigri · 11/09/2019 21:45

Is anyone else finding it really hard right now to believe that this government will ever deliver any Brexit of any sort?

I'm not saying that Brexit is undeliverable, just that it requires some basic competence. Every day I think "now I've seen it all", but it turns out there are new depths still to be plumbed.

Parker231 · 11/09/2019 21:46

Why doesn’t it bother you that lorries will be delayed ? This is a fact.

time4chocolate · 11/09/2019 21:47

I’ve just read it - I don’t think it’s going to have the impact that Dominic Grieve et al hoped it would.

Completely agree with Boris not divulging mobile phone messages etc.

In other news, Tom Watson says the 2016 referendum is no longer valid and wants to have another referendum before any election!!

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 11/09/2019 21:49

Except it's not the "worst case scenario", merely what actual, you know, experts, think are the most likely problems.

This "worst case scenario" bullshit, still spouted by the lying likes of Gove, has long been disproved.

howabout · 11/09/2019 21:50

Actually not a "fact" at all. Iain Dale interviewed ex head of Port of Dover (UK's 9th most significant port and hardly matters at all to anyone North of Watford) earlier in the week. He reckons any delays at all are unlikely and planning for anyone not up to speed (pardon the pun) is in good shape.

AuldAlliance · 11/09/2019 21:51

Just for clarity, nothing I have said is intended to be threatening (in a bad way).
But you still don't want to provide clarity as to what you meant?
It's threatening, but in a good way?
OK.

howabout · 11/09/2019 21:57

The next thrilling instalment on what happens if the stalemate on calling an election continues.

Oranginna · 11/09/2019 22:01

Is anyone else finding it really hard right now to believe that this government will ever deliver any Brexit of any sort?
Me.
We need a general election.

howabout · 11/09/2019 22:01

time4chocolate pretty sure Tom Watson's constituents are busy trying to prove his selection invalid. More power to their elbows I say. Cannot wait till we can ignore him as a political non-entity. Oh sorry I forgot. We now pay more attention to ex politicians and also rans than the actual incumbents. [gjn] Cake Cake I can do without him lecturing me on my diet too.

howabout · 11/09/2019 22:03

Disproved by whom Doris? I've shown you mine.

Bearbehind · 11/09/2019 22:07

Am reading some of it now and it makes a very good case for why we have to leave the EU now rather than in x number of years when it will be even riskier.

Exactly as I said on another thread - it only serves to make Leavers more determined

There is no good ending now

YeOldeTrout · 11/09/2019 22:16

Parliament is prorogued which means there is no institution that might check the power of the executive right now... except the courts. How can we not have a court with powers to rule on constitutional matters? Idea of having no such legal authority makes me extremely alarmed.

No power... except the Monarch, I suppose? Coz we all know how the Queen likes to get involved in politics.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/09/2019 00:55

Are we supposed to believe TMs scare everyone into voting for her deal 'worst' case scenario? I imagine an updated version of what Boris has planned will be a LOT different.

Need to get out of the EU asap.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 12/09/2019 01:06

By the people wot wrote it @Howabout, have you not been paying attention?

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 12/09/2019 01:19

Or, if you prefer, ...

Greenland left the EU after a referendum. It took several years despite one issue - fishing rights.

Greenland originally joined the then-European Community with Denmark in 1973. At that time Greenland had no autonomy from Denmark, which it gained in 1979. ... Greenland left in 1985, following a referendum in 1982 with 53% voting for withdrawal after a dispute over fishing rights.

My local FB thread and the local MPs FB thread which were usually full of the kind of cheery bollocks often touted on here has taken a rather different tone overnight.
There are still a few cult members posting but most are of the "we believe it and don't want this" variety.
Lobby your MP to agree a border in the sea type option and we get Leave with a transition period to avoid this horrible stuff.
