Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

A quick Google of ‘trigger ballot’ reveals that it’s normal Labour Party procedure. Why Camden Momentum aren’t making this clear is a mystery to me!

MockersthefeMANist · 08/09/2019 17:09

Siddiq is as much a 'foreign agent' as Patel. Her vow of silence on human rights abuses in Bangladesh under her Aunt's rule includes telling a pregnant journo who asked her about it, "Hope you have a great birth because child labour is hard.”

I don't think there would be trouble in Glasgow if it wasn't for Brexit.

Brexit has divided every country in the UK and Soctkand has the added issue of possible independence.

There has been anger and resentment simmering under the surface for a very long time and the rhetoric from BJ's govt has no doubt stoked the fire.

There are idiots in Glasgow the same way there are in the rest of the UK- they just voted remain in the most part because the Scottish press has a different viewpoint.

Can someone (anyone?) pleaseeee explain this jumped the shark "thing" that's rife on MN

Happy Days; Fonzy jumped a shark. That was when a TV show just went downhill and never recovered.

TheMShip · 08/09/2019 17:13

Jumping the shark: when something goes way overboard and it's totally ridiculous in order to get attention that is used to have and no longer does: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark

DeRigueurMortis · 08/09/2019 17:13

So where do we think Rudd will stand as an indie Con?

Boris only has a 5k majority over Labour (other parties training significantly (LD's got 1.8k votes in 3rd place).

If she stood there there's a good chance of her splitting the Con vote, especially if the LD's don't stand a candidate.

Better still Id bloody love to see a two horse race there between Johnson and Rudd...wouldn't it be a glorious thing to see Johhson dethroned as an MP even if the Tories win a GE - revenge of the one nations Tories....

Yes I know it's unlikely but I can dream.

JeSuisPoulet · 08/09/2019 17:13

Could they evoke Civil Contingencies after the QS - 24th? So BoZo has to go and fails to get a deal (damn EU!) and thus giving them time to sail through No Deal after the Queen's speech and so doesn't have to get involved (7 days...with a good wind in HoC) - does the 7 days include weekends? Could be earlier if not.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/09/2019 17:13

fluffy The court case would be MPs forcing BJ to obey the law and apply for an extension,
or possibly BJ applying to have the Kinnock Bill set aside as unconstituinal or whatever.

Once the exension is there, the WA becomes less likely, as there is not such an immediate threat of No Deal

Basilpots · 08/09/2019 17:13

@HesterThrale
Glad you are safe.

The footage on Twitter of the chants “we’ve got a lamppost for you” at the very mild looking pro eu protestors was chilling.

MockersthefeMANist · 08/09/2019 17:14

Can someone pleaseeee explain this jumped the shark "thing"?

When a long-running TV show or film series loses credibility because the characters start acting implausibly and out of character.

Takes its name from "Happy Days" when ultra-cool Arthur Fonzerelli put on speedos to go water-skiiing and jump over a shark. (Sharks were a 'thing' at this time because of Jaws, recently released.)

Now means anything that is past its sell-by date.

DGRossetti · 08/09/2019 17:14

Roeg did it all a quarter of a century earlier and better in Performance.

Did I see you down in San Antoine ....

One of the Stones best ever songs .... almost predicts Cunmmings

You're the man that squats behind the man that works the soft machine

JeSuisPoulet · 08/09/2019 17:16

With the CCA - they could even say it was because Remoaners would stockpile and take everything not nailed down from the rest of the country because they are heading UK for No Deal...

Hazardtired · 08/09/2019 17:18

we've got a lampost for you

I hope the response was

GREAT! We'd love to stick it up your ass.

Is this why DP is nervous about me going to protests Blush

Ta red

Apileofballyhoo · 08/09/2019 17:18

Hester I'm glad Saturday was ok and you were safe. I'm just worried that Cummings's plan is to stir up the mob so the CCA can be brought in at the beginning of October.

Grinchly · 08/09/2019 17:19

14 October-Queen's Speech.
also 953rd anniversary of the Battle of Hastings
Grin
It's my parents' wedding anniversary, much joked about, which is why I know.

MockersthefeMANist · 08/09/2019 17:19

Politically, "Die in the last ditch" rather than accept something is a reference to the Tory Lords in 1909 opposing taxes on their estates to pay for old age pensions under the Liberal Govt's budget.

(They gave in.)

TheMShip · 08/09/2019 17:20

The CCA worries me. Not the definitions of emergencies, they're pretty clear, but that it can be invoked without challenge initially. It's unclear whether or not that could be challenged under judicial review. (From wikipedia on Orders in Council: A given prerogative order therefore may or may not be subject to judicial review, depending on its nature.)

Grinchly · 08/09/2019 17:20

Oh and thanks again for the new thread, Red. 🌸🌸🌸

HesterThrale · 08/09/2019 17:21

Thanks @Basilpots.

Apparently Anna Soubry had been unable to speak at the rally.

The anti-Brexit MP Anna Soubry said she was too frightened to speak due to the presence of the pro-Brexit demonstrators, and left the earlier event outside parliament after consulting with the police and organisers. “I’m a parliamentarian and I have a right to speak and I shouldn’t be frightened,” she said, “but it’s very, very, very disturbing, and I’m very frightened actually.”

BigChocFrenzy · 08/09/2019 17:21

Hasenstein If the extension is refused, then that would have taken us to some time from about 22 October onwards

  • AND if BJ resists applying for the extension, then even later

It is possible the WA might be brought forward if there is no extension because BJ is refusing to apply for one
and court cases are ongoing which make it possible that time would run out

The CCA is something that BJ might call up early October during prorogation

  • probably nothing Parliament can do directly because even though they return 15 October, the CCA runs for 30 days before they can vote it down

MPs would have to apply to the courts that the CCA was only a party political trick
I've no idea if the court would dare decide that
..... especially if a lot more civil disorder etc has been whipped up in the meantime

TheMShip · 08/09/2019 17:21

Sorry that should say "invoked without challenge by Parliament initially")
