Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

Disappointed in Rory.

This is excellent but Cummings has form in refusing to comply with FOIs & going to lengths to evade scrutiny. What steps being taken to preserve evidence?

SHRED. DELETE. Go!

Helene Bismarck @helenebismarck
Genuine question: if, say, Cummings does not volunteer his phone, what happens? They send in the police to confiscate it? Court Order? What?

See above.

Not much.

Supreme Court and police searches take time.

We don't have time.

Cummings has already been found in Contempt - by rights he should not have a HoC pass

@bercows my friend bought me a Bercow mug & shopping bag, I love them!

OublietteBravo · 09/09/2019 20:19

Can I be frivolous for a couple of minutes please?

What odds will you give me on Bercow being a contestant on Strictly 2020?

Jittery, belated placemark. Thank you Red.

So sad to see Bercow go but better now than after the election I suspect. What an extraordinary afternoon in Parliament.

Waves to Hazard, yes one of DH’s Parkinson’s five different PD meds meds (the generic version of it) is on that list. He has to take it five times a day so this is bad news. It’s one of the most widely used PD treatments - I’m shocked it hasn’t been stockpiled. Actually on reflection I’m not shocked at all. Shock capacity lacking atm.

What about a special MPs version of Love Island

Outsomnia · 09/09/2019 20:40

Has rock bottom been reached now do you think?

If removal of the whip for so many Tories, the lies, deceit, prorogation and so many other awful things have not made a jot of difference really, well I think we are finished.

And mobile phones should be banned from the chamber. It just makes those speaking look irrelevant and boring (maybe some are), but members can slip out to the bar/toilet whatever and preserve some dignity. But no. Not happening.

Just having a rant, and it's possibly a reaction to Bercow leaving, saddo that I am. I know it wasn't unexpected, but still, amongst all the shenanigans, he is (was) a great orator, he often lightened the mood, and kept the idiots in check.

God almighty where are we headed. It is just so depressing.

Oh, and I saw a clip of Johnson and Varadker in Dublin earlier today. I have to say LV was so polished and professional, a statesman standing up for his country, an independent country that Johnson probably still assumes is part of the UK. And the cut of Johnson beside him was just so embarrassing. Yes that is the person in charge of UK now. Awful stuff.

OublietteBravo · 09/09/2019 20:50

What about a special MPs version of Love Island?

Only after someone invents brain bleach.

NotaRealLawyer · 09/09/2019 20:50

I thought LV was a credit to his country. He was excellent.

Grinchly · 09/09/2019 20:50

Am behind but utterly wonderful history historic; stuff from Grieve

Tarchie · 09/09/2019 20:51

I have DCs who rely every day on medication listed as likely to be affected. If my children don’t have their medicine, it would ultimately prove fatal. Within a very short time, but no-one seems bothered. The support group, pharmacist and GP are all simply saying things “should be ok” which isn’t at all reassuring. I even emailed my MP but her office just said that she was busy working on minimising the inconvenience to all her constituents. Not much consolation to a very concerned parent!!

Hazardtired · 09/09/2019 20:56

singing I'm sorry my heart sank for you both when I saw it.

We can cling to its not official and just a guess list put together by one company??

Hazardtired · 09/09/2019 20:58

tarchie Its so frustrating to feel like your not being heard properly. Flowers
