Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

Not sure Dawn Butler got the love in memo here

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 16:30

He is a great speaker and I don't think anyone can control the thugs in Parliament like he has done so especially in the last few months. He's a very clever guy. I'm so gutted. Its definitely going to get bad over the next few years.Sad

Songsofexperience · 09/09/2019 16:31

Why couldn't he wait a bit longer? Why is he resigning amidst the chaos?

Songsofexperience · 09/09/2019 16:32

Basically he'll be making way for a nutter, won't he?

Peregrina · 09/09/2019 16:33

I would hope that Lindsay Hoyle got the job. He would maintain order in his own way and wouldn't stand for any nonsense from either side.

AutumnCrow · 09/09/2019 16:33

He's doing a Ruth Davidson. Fuck this shit, and I'd like to see my family more.

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 16:36

I can imagine the threats Berkow has had from the likes of ' loathesome' Leadsom and those who accused him of bullying. I bet it went on the lines of ' go now or we will start throwing shit at you' ( even if its unfounded). He's had to think of his family I'm sure but its a decision that has not come easy for him. I've got tears in my eyes too! A d the Tory front bench ate pigs! I hope to goodness they all lose their seats at next GE.

pumkinspicetime · 09/09/2019 16:37

The conservatives were threatening to break with tradition and stand a candidate against him.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 16:38

Songs I'm thinking that we have a better chance of getting a non-nutter from this parliament than the next one.

fedup21 · 09/09/2019 16:39

Goodness me, things move fast round here.

What next-any predictions?!

So very sad to see Bercow go 😢

DGRossetti · 09/09/2019 16:40

Apparently someone has quoted an EU source as saying "The EU will never force no-deal on the UK"

HmmHmmHmmHmmHmm

If true, not quite sure what it means. If anything.

Hoooo · 09/09/2019 16:51

I imagine he is quite happy to piss on the erg tory chips

TatianaLarina · 09/09/2019 16:51

Bercow NOOOOOOOOO!! Sad Sad Sad

RedToothBrush · 09/09/2019 16:52

In theory, it shouldn't make a jot of difference. The speaker is supposed to be above party and policies.

In ordinary times yes. At a time when there is a constitutional issue? I note the lack of bums on the government benches for this whilst the opposition benches are rammed.

I'm thinking he's going now before an election to give parliament a chance to choose a new speaker from the current bunch rather than a possibly more scary bunch after a GE.

So yes I do agree with this. A new speaker gets a free run at a GE in theory.

Also the person who oversees the election of the next speaker is the father of the House (currently Ken Clarke). I believe the next in line is Dennis Skinner but who knows if he will stand again nor if he will survive a general (his seat was very marginal at the last General)

The list is then:
Sir Peter Bottomley Con Worthing West
Geoffrey Robinson Lab Coventry North West
Barry Sheerman Lab Huddersfield
The Rt Hon Frank Field Ind Birkenhead
The Rt Hon Harriet Harman Lab Camberwell and Peckham

The deputy chairman of the Conservative Party such a nonentity that I forget who it was Wink was insisting to Kay Burley that Leo Varadkar had said this morning during BJ-Cummings' visit that although the EU didn't want No Deal, it wouldn't allow another extension.

I'm not sure that's quite what I heard Varadkar saying Confused

Grinchly · 09/09/2019 16:55

Watching the Bercow speech and follow up responses on Guardian website. Very moving indeed and what a bunch of disgraceful twits on the Tory front bench for not applauding.

Again, as with PMQs, I thought Corbyn was very good indeed. It flowed well and very clearly came from the heart.

The whole thing was curiously uplifting in these dark times.

ContinuityError · 09/09/2019 16:59

DGRossetti

I’ve heard that too - might suggest that the EU won’t deny an extension on 31/10?

Peregrina · 09/09/2019 16:59

Good to see that Rees-Mogg is getting a bashing for his remarks about Dr Nichol, said under Parliamentary privilege, so he couldn't be sued.

Wonderful to hear the tributes to Bercow. It's now turning into a bit of a love in - You are wonderful Mr Speaker - So are you the honourable member for ......

Either way, I think he's outwitted Johnson; today ought to have been Johnson waffle about how the Irish are bowing down to me. Instead, he's got pushed to the back.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 17:02

Bercow just commented that they would "have more time if it weren't for this" - I think - "ridiculous..." And I missed the last word.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 17:03

The whole thing was curiously uplifting in these dark times. Agreed, Grinchly.

The speaker is elected by majority.

If a hard right government have a majority, then can whip for someone of their choice who might not be non-partisan and may just do the governments bidding.

This parliament is both hung and full of independents. That helps to protect parliamentary sovereignty.

You would hope.
