Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

I dunno, bellini, the Brexit zombie apocalypse can only be the logical conclusion to all of this! In which case the OFRS might be useful. And potentially a 6 pack of tuna to stove the zombies' heads in. 🤷‍♀️

One of John Mann’s first jobs will surely be to find out why the IHRA code on antisemitism in the Tory Party only applies to officials and elected representatives but not to all members: a curious omission.

Im becoming more and more disgusted at this country and I have no option but to stay and take it, Bear mentioned the Tory chip on my shoulder, is it any wonder?

I guess we all cope in different ways sos

We have had to spend lots of £££ on this stuff....which has meant sacrificing other things. It's certainly not been easy.

The moment it looks like things are getting really bad the dc and I will leave.

Not sure where yet!

Dh will not cannot come with us.

It will mean leaving my elderly mum (who refuses to even talk about brexit).

I will do whatever is neccessary to protect my children.

I seem to living in a surreal nightmare atm tbh.

One one hand I'm prepping for civil unrest, on the other I'm planning ds2s bday party and thinking about xmas....very, very odd feeling...just got to koko I guess.

Re the two letter plan from BJ- this is from Charlie Falconer which seems to dismiss the idea as illegal....

Charlie Falconer
@LordCFalconer
“One plan would see PM send accompanying letter alongside request to extend Article 50 setting out Government does not want any delay after Oct 31.” DTel, tonight. Statutory Purpose of request letter is to get extension. To seek to destroy statutory purpose is to break law.

The very first two tweets I've seen this morning

David Allen Green @davidallengreen
Good morning

Government will be bound shortly by a law obliging them to seek A50 extension if there is no deal

Govt responses so far:

Break law
- Slapped down by Lord Chancellor

Emergency powers
- Legally illiterate

Side letter
- Also legally illiterate

They are desperate

James Patrick @j_ames
The EU extension law doesn’t:

Compel the prime minister to justify any extension request

Prevent the prime minister from adding a covering letter explaining why he disagrees

Prevent him from sending it now because of the wording of the conditions

Perhaps needed more thought.

This is all very wearing, emotionally and intellectually!

Maybe the point is to grind the country down so we are all just grateful for whatever we get at the end of it (when no deal is avoided by the skin of our teeth).

What if extinction rebellion cause trouble so this is used as an opportunity?
RTB

Or what about sectarian violence in Glasgow...
Who is behind all those counter demonstrations that turn ugly, I wonder?

And might there be an act of provocation or a false flag operation in NI?
The British public and press are highly unlikely to closely scrutinise anything that happens involving 'Celtic and Rangers fans', or 'among the Irish'/ 'over there'.

By the time truth was revealed - commission of inquiry reporting back in a few years - the damage would be done (cf Gove sledgehapper approach described upthread).

Hazardtired · 09/09/2019 07:53

just linked to the GP story last night. A few select MPs found out about it on the day the suspension was announced so no chance to argue against. Not that any would.

It's sneaky and classic tory imo. Look over here while I screw you over, over there. What else is being cut/scaled back that we don't know about?

Next up why the fuck are we paying for consultants if we won't utilise them? So then there'll say there's limited demand for that specialism and get rid.

Meanwhile gp surgeries will be clogged up with complex medical cases and simple basic medical problems won't be dealt with swiftly because no one can get an appointment.

KennDodd · 09/09/2019 07:55

History won't be kind to these evil politicians

As if they care about that.

Absolutely yes, I think it's what many, many people did vote for.

JeSuisPoulet · 09/09/2019 07:56

I'm not sure if "legally illiterate" bothers Cummings. I'm sure people will think he won't try something if it doesn't work in law but that's why he does it - to "melt" people with shock/awe - the latter is what he hopes I suspect. While everyone argues about the legality or it is taken to Court, time marches on and nothing gets done.

I have to agree. The sort of people who aren't interested in politics, stuck their cross where the Mail told them to, can't normally be bothered to vote in GE's, but we are having to destroy the country because of them. All egged into doing this by 40 or so mardy, extremely wealthy Tories, who will do a Dyson and skip the country if it gets too unpleasant for them.

Of course they will do a Dyson. They won't even wait for the corpse of the UK to be cold to fuck off somewhere else. This is a heist on a national scale and those trying to pull it off are no better than the lowlife who burglared my house last year.

Peregrina · 09/09/2019 08:24

But they speak with posh accents a le Rees-Mogg, so people don't realise that their behaviour is as scummy as the worst low lifes.

Worse if anything, (sorry for your experience songs must have been traumatic af Flowers) this is all done with a veneer of respectability and 'its done for your own good'

Me too. I was pondering this last night, comparing DGRs lovely story with the twitter comments underneath the poor Portughese lady's interview.

Interesting article in the Daily Lie:

It’s me or Boris: what Jo Johnson’s wife told him

Ironically I was just having a conversation with my husband yesterday saying I wondered if Amelia had advised Jo to resign. Not because of BJ’s wife, but simply because he’s a sinking extremist ship.

Amelia is of course an award winning left wing journalist, who’s done sterling work on benefits and Windrush.

So I think it’s possible there’s some truth behind the gossip.
