Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

If we Brexit, a future govt could apply to rejoin

No government can prevent its successors from either Invoking or Revoki

I can barely keep up with these threads. Continued thanks to our indomitable regulars & well done on pushing past the disruptors.

Papers look like only Express has any faith in BoZo.

And they say JC would cause uncertainty!

Off to bed now to try to sleep. Let's see if we get a yellowhammer wake up call tomorrow!

pamperramper · 08/09/2019 23:52

Do we have any idea why the police are recommending grab bags? And what about petrol shortages?

AutumnCrow · 08/09/2019 23:55

Jesus. Grab bags. Curiouser and crazier.

Apileofballyhoo · 08/09/2019 23:56

Hope everyone gets a good night's sleep.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/09/2019 00:01

Forgot to say don't forget Ireland and UK Common Travel Area if things look like they're getting really bad. You still currently have right to live and work in one EU member state even when UK Brexits. 5 years (I think) to citizenship.

RosinaAlmaviva · 09/09/2019 00:12

We're well into a new thread now, but I had to thank BigChocFrenzy for this pungent image:

BJ has been spraying around promises of billions in spending, like a tomcat drunk on catnip, spraying the Magic Money Tree

Grin

Do we have any idea why the police are recommending grab bags?

September is Preparedness Month apparently? It's a US thing which has now been adopted here, much like Black Friday:

www.epa.gov/natural-disasters/september-preparedness-month

September is apparently when most hurricane activity happens. People like Flylady in the US recommend grab bags, they're a good idea especially if you live in an area prone to natural disaster and might suddenly have to take refuge.

I think the timing is a bit unfortunate as everyone is on edge over Brexit, and it's certainly ironic that Preparedness Month is the one our government has chosen to dash around like a chicken with its head off, but these things happen.

(First post on new iPhone 7 - must relearn how to stop the keyboard clicking)

Still catching up after a) going off to get my new phone (upgrading from an iPhone 4 which causes its own problems as my old iPhone long stopped properly backing up to iCloud and the iOSes won't talk to each other Hmm), b) going to supper at my dad's, c) making a fruit cake to post to ds tomorrow for his birthday and d) setting up the new phone Blush

But, in response to flouncyfanny - garden is still available Grin but ContinuityError is correct: Siamese language is loud - and this current pair is the loudest and most vociferous that I can remember in 50 years of owning being owned by Siamese Shock

The contents for a fucksack advice is amusing as I had sent ds a windup, solar powered torch/lamp/USB charger/radio as an "extra" birthday present. It arrived early and he was somewhat bemused as he said, "But I don't listen to the radio Confused". Once I'd explained that it was being prepared for Brexit and other eventualities Wink, he was still not convinced as he said that the USB charger was only "supposed" to be used for emergencies. I had to spell out that a power cut would be defined as an emergency Confused Only then did he get it Grin

Must get myself a similar one Wink

If we have a vote on the WA, will anybody tag a revoke amendment on / will revoke also be voted on? Given the utter clusterfuck, I wonder if revoke has any more traction.

The kids' passports expire in Dec. I might renew them now.

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 05:23

Well im not worrying about stocking up as if there's a war. I can't afford to stock up, my cupboard is never full so used to doing without. There are millions in this country the same so I won't be alone! Think its getting out of hand now what with grabbags stocking up, plans to leave the country, escape routes etc. Think its all a bit too much for me now. What will be will be. If you don't have tremendous resources it seems you will have to manage no matter what. So, I will not worry about it. I will not panic buy, have sleepless nights over it. I will cross each bridge as I come to it. I know it will be hard if all the prophecies of doom come true but I won't be the only one left behind to get on with it. 3/4 of the country will be in the sane boat.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 05:37

Grab bags or, as MN has wonderfully described them "ohfucksacks" are an utterly normal concept anywhere in the world except here.
September is Preparedness Month in several countries and the only sinister thing about it is the fact it occurs while Brexit nonsense is ongoing.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/09/2019 05:40

Think its getting out of hand now what with grabbags stocking up

I'm sorry, but that's just rude. People who are stocking up aren't 'grab bags'. I'm sorry your situation doesn't allow for you to stock up, and I appreciate that I'm fortunate I can. But I've got small children and will do whatever I can to ensure that whatever 'bumps' there are after no deal are as small as possible in relation to the impact on them. Including the food they have to eat.

And if it does all go to utter shit and I lose my job, then I will step up efforts to join DH's brother in NZ, if we can get visas.

Thinking about alternative options doesn't make somebody a bad / inconsiderate person.

borntobequiet · 09/09/2019 05:40

BJ going to Ireland to bully/coerce/persuade them to do what? exactly - in the anniversary year of the beginning of the Irish War of Independence (does he know or care?)
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Irish_War_of_Independence
My mother, God rest her, remembered the Black and Tans and the horrors of that time.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/09/2019 05:42

Oh, apologies, you're not calling people grabbags. I mis-read. I've now read bellini's following post.

But the sentiment is the same. People are just doing what they can.

FWIW, I'm not doing a grab bag. But I think DH already has one set up!

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 05:58

Its OK fluffy people deal with things in different ways. I'm not knocking people for dealing with things different to me. I was only stating what I will do/ can/cannot do.
Having always had to lurch from one crisis to another due to financial and health circumstances I believe that stress and worry can overtake your life and life is too short for that IMO.
I live for the minute appreciating every one of those minutes. Its my own personal ethos and coping mechanism. My family have always been my priority and if I worry excessively I may miss previous minutes

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 05:59

....of joy and love with them.

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 06:01

Precious minutes.

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 06:06

I always think what the worst could be, ponder for a few seconds, realise that no matter what as long as I have my family I can cope with anything life throws at me!Smile

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/09/2019 06:07

Sostenueto - I feel your pain, I can barely survive month by month, the joy of the Tories 'welfare' 'reform', if prices go up I'll just have to do with out, if fuel is rationed, I wont be leaving the house because I live miles and miles away from humanity in the Welsh boonies, the only thing that takes me through all of this is the saying that a friend of mine uses 'it is what it is'

Sostenueto · 09/09/2019 06:12

Exactly just it is what it is!Flowers

NoWordForFluffy · 09/09/2019 06:15

I think it's disgusting that people have to resign themselves to - essentially - poverty in this country. And that the government is willing and ready to make life even worse for them.

History won't be kind to these evil politicians. And if hell exists? Well, I know where they're heading.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 06:16

Please, for the love of all that is holy, will you all stop conflating grab bags with Brexit. And will you all stop conflating stockpiling and panic buying.
Slowly buying a few extra bits a few months ago (over a few months to spread the cost ) just to have a small buffer of food and hygiene stuff in does not equal middle class panic buying.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/09/2019 06:21

And if hell exists? Well, I know where they're heading.

One of the drawback of being an atheist is knowing that theres no punishment after death for these people and in life are shielded from the hell they cause other people, a politician on 70K a year gets to decide that £74/week is enough for a single, unemployed person to live on, its disgusting
