Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

'm feeling really quite anxious tonight what with the Cummings "melt" threat and all this grab bag stuff

Make yourself look strong even though you are weak..

Is this what Cummings is doing now?

Songsofexperience · 08/09/2019 22:56

I admit the 'grabbag' talks make me feel anxious. Cummings is a dangerous lunatic.

ContinuityError · 08/09/2019 22:59

Dear God can we not find a job for IDS that removes him from any sort

I’d happily crowd fund a shepherd’s hut for him so that he can live out his batshit flights of fancy in a harmless straight-to-remainder-bin way.

JeSuisPoulet · 08/09/2019 23:00

I think my new name says it all!
Not much advice on anxiety - weirdly mine is no where near as bad as March; like I've had a trial run and am feeling as prepared as I can be. I've not got fresh veg despite planting over 50 seeds (other than green tomatoes but we shall see if they last!) so I can say I have tried! I haven't stockpiled wine though...oversight!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/09/2019 23:04

"What happens if the EU do not give us an extension ?"

Then
either MPs vote for the WA
or the PM Revokes
or it's No Deal at 11 pm on 31 October

JeSuisPoulet · 08/09/2019 23:06

BoZo heading to Ireland to discuss backstop etc. Not sure that's the best place to go as UK PM while you talk about breaking the law and being dead in a ditch Hmm.

Ellie56 · 08/09/2019 23:06

We have quite a lot of wine owing to all the supermarkets' recent 25% off deals. Wine

Oakenbeach · 08/09/2019 23:06

What happens if the EU do not give us an extension at the summit?

Three choices:

a) we leave with “no deal”
b) we leave with the WA
c) we revoke

The EU refusing to extend would concentrate minds and would likely lead to the WA being resurrected and passed.... In the final analysis how could it not be! Apart from a few dozen Tory Brexit Ultras, the DUP, Kate Hoey and a handful of Remain extremists who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for deal which meant we left, it would likely pass quite comfortably.... Of course, there may need to be a technical extension beyond 31st to ensure all arrangements were in place, but I don’t imagine that would be an issue.

colouringpro

I hear you.

Plan!

That's been my way of dealing with it and writing emails, signing petitions, going on marches

I've got an ohfucksack. (See upthread) Get all your important information and documents (birth certs, passports etc) in one place. Have some ready cash.

I've been stockpiling food and meds since last summer.

I've got a debit card with euros on.

I've been able to get EU citizenship for me and my kids - I realise how lucky I am in that regard.

^ all of the above has taken time and money, of course.

If I were in your position I would start with a 3 day food/water/meds buffer. Then build up to a week. Then a month.

Get your 1st aid kit up to date.

If you can, get wind up torches, a wind up radio and power banks, batteries and a solar lamp. Look into camping stoves.

If you have a car, keep it's fuel tank half full.

It's so shit.

It seems unbelievable that we are talking about any of this, doesn't it?

chomalungma · 08/09/2019 23:08

There is nothing in the new Act that tells the PM what to do if there is no extension given, is there?

chomalungma · 08/09/2019 23:09

It's at times like this I bet some people wished that they lived on a continent and not just an island off the Continent.

It keeps us safe from people wanting to get in....but harder to get out.

colouringinpro · 08/09/2019 23:11

Thanks Hooooo

iIt's so surreal. Yes I'll have to get organised again. Somehow will have to find the time and money, both a real challenge in my house.

Hoooo · 08/09/2019 23:16

Start small....build up.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 08/09/2019 23:17

BigChocFrenzy · 08/09/2019 23:22

"if there is no extension given"

Then Kinnock's bill will bring back the WA for MPs to vote on

Ellie56 · 08/09/2019 23:22

Can't believe this is all happening in the UK.

And that so many educated people seem oblivious to what is going on...

BigChocFrenzy · 08/09/2019 23:23

Boris Johnson will 'test to the limit' law forcing no-deal Brexit delay, says Dominic Raab

Brief reminder that revoking A50 doesn’t overturn the referendum or stop Brexit

Lots of people say it does both

These people are wrong

JeSuisPoulet · 08/09/2019 23:25

If we did have chaos here and somehow managed to get to, say, France. What are the rules about becoming a refugee?

If BoZo goes full dictator and remainers are still "enemies of the people" or worse, could we be granted asylum or - horror of horrors - does he have to start imprisoning people for that to be a valid reason?

I am very meh over planning. There keeps being curve balls. I started cutting out breakfast a few months ago as a cost saviour, enough pasta/rice for a few weeks and meds, meds, meds. Wind up radio which hoooo made me buy.

I keep meaning to get a few packs of lighters that have surprisingly good mini torches in them from poundland. And stock up freezer.

Other than that mehhh. If shit hits the fan I think me, DP plus dog are kinda fucked and there's no way to overcome that really.

So cheery Grin

How are they wrong?

BigChocFrenzy · 08/09/2019 23:33

Revoke legally does stop Brexit - at least this time

A future PM could invoke A50 again - which never required a referendum, anyway

JeSuisPoulet · 08/09/2019 23:33

Had several lecturers who were very twitchy about teaching us ANYTHING about the opiod crisis only a couple of years ago despite me asking why it wasn't on our addictions module news.sky.com/story/fears-uk-could-follow-the-us-into-opioid-crisis-11805269 Hmm

Big pharma certainly getting rich from Brexit Sad
