Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

One plus is that BJ’s rule is every bit of a shitshow everyone believed it would be.

He and Cummings are clearly mildly insane.

Apileofballyhoo · 08/09/2019 21:29

So as red said it depends on what an 'emergency' is. I don't know how people could argue in court that something is not an emergency if there is are no court sittings, for example.

It's terrible that so much depends on people in government being normal.

chomalungma · 08/09/2019 21:31

It's terrible that so much depends on people in government being normal

If we do come out of this the other side, I think there are going to be a lot of demands for changes to the way our country operates.

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 21:40

I won't be able to fit the dog in a grabbag....

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 21:41

Not sure I could fit ALL of my meds in a grabbag.....

TatianaLarina · 08/09/2019 21:42

My above post ^^ was in response to reports today that BJ is being urged to break the law. And Cummings and his legal loopholes.

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 21:42

Hope there will be room in grabbag forGin

Normal and sane.

We’re going to need serious psychological profiling after this debacle.

TatianaLarina · 08/09/2019 21:44

Of MPs I mean.

Entrance exams, psychiatric assessment.

BirdandSparrow · 08/09/2019 21:44

I know why pur democracy is in such shit. There are no gentlemen/women in Parliament. We have an unwritten constitution and years ago people abided by the code of gentlemen/women e.g agreements were kept, words were kept, promises kept etc. To break these codes were seemed unseemly and below the status expected. Or am I rambling here?

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 21:47

Good idea flouncy Grin

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 21:51

It will be a rummin' if Cummings turns out to be a Russian 'plant' nurtured from a very young age to destroy western democracies.

It could he very deep cover operation.
Definitely need to go to bed med's kicked in 2 hours ago!

Outsomnia · 08/09/2019 21:55

What has UK become now?

Don't get me wrong I enjoy all the gin and wine stuff and fun in the face of adversity, but honestly, this issue is just being handled so badly all round, it is beyond parody completely now.

Every day there is some other daft idea.

If it wasn't so important to everyone's lives it would be the subject of some mad TV/Netfix drama. But that may happen too I reckon, in time.

chomalungma · 08/09/2019 21:59

I just need to clarify.
Johnson no longer has a majority.
He knows he won't be able to get a Queen's Speech through Parliament.
He is proroguing Parliament for 5 weeks to prepare for a Queen's Speech.

Is that where we are at the moment?

RedToothBrush · 08/09/2019 22:01

Write a letter to the EU saying we don't have a reason for an extension, seems to be the latest idea.

This from the Daily Star about Therese Coffey the new DWP minister.....

DPAC co-founder Linda Burnip told the Star: “Therese Coffey is just the latest in a long line of nasty DWP ministers who have consistently voted to further impoverish disabled people.
“She has also suggested that pensioners should be forced to pay national insurance contributions to get their pension.
“Together with the idea that the retirement age should be raised to 75 put forward by Iain Duncan Smith’s think tank, her appointment very much suggests the Tories are now going to target our pensioners in spite of our state pensions already leaving many unable to heat their homes.”

Re vetting, Cameron's dir of comms Andy Coulson never applied for higher level clearance (despite his predecessors having it), and thus avoided the most rigorous vetting.

After Coulson was arrested, there was some discussion of whether he'd seen/heard material he shouldn't, because those around him simply hadn't realised he wasn't cleared.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Coulson

Does make me wonder what clearance Cummings has applied for, and whether he got it.

No, you're not rambling Sustenuoto. That's why they always said we didn't need a written constitution. They were the Honourable members and worked to Gentlemen's agreements and the like.

However, it's also said that the British knew when to stop being Gentlemen and they've had their bounders and scoundrels over the years. It's our ill-luck that the bounders and scoundrels are in power at the moment.

RedToothBrush · 08/09/2019 22:17

Re CCA: if the government declare no deal an emergency, then how do the opposition argue otherwise if they think no deal is a disaster and they want to stop it at any lengths?

How would you tackle that in court too?

OP posts:
NoWordForFluffy · 08/09/2019 22:19

You'd argue that if it's such an emergency, Parliament should be sitting and active to either stop it happening or to ensure all necessary legislation is in place (i.e. the legislation required for NI to keep functioning).

RedToothBrush · 08/09/2019 22:23

Also, you could sting the opposition for failing to support the CCA and proposed measures. If no deal is such a threat why aren't you backing the CCA measures to prevent x, y or z.
