Westminstenders: The Rule of Law

We enter week 2 of what might be considered 'the end game'.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that liberals are not welcome in their ranks. It has become the Brexit Party.

Farage is talking of a pact, though Javid has said no. What would Javid know though, he's only in the Cabinet.

Amber Rudd has resigned. She will run as an independent in an unnamed constituency at the next election. The assumption must therefore be she has been talking to a few people this week about this, though whether that means she is a 'One Nation Tory' independent candidate or simply an independent isn't clear.

Some think that her departure will deal Johnson yet another blow at the polls. Others think as the cabinet members with the worst satisfaction rating amongst tory party members this will be viewed positively by leavers and give Johnson a bounce in the polls.

It been reported that Cummings has overruled Johnson on at least key decisions this week which raises the question of who is in charge and running the show.

Cummings has promised to make us all melt in the coming weeks as he takes a sledge hammer to constitutional convention. He's advised no 10 staff to be 'cool like Fonzies'. A reference to pulp fiction and to happy days. As some have commented if you think about Cummings as some one who has watched too much Tarantino it does make him make a lot more sense.

There are suggestions that Johnson will break the rule of law in refusing to ask for an extension and the No10 have a trick up their sleeve over loopholes. The most obvious thing here being to offer the EU a deal they can't possibly refuse agree too to smear them and to then make it impossible for the EU to agree to an extension which noises out of France seem to suggest anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting...

@flouncyfanny , I think we will all be given inflatable unicorns along with the free trampolines we will all get.

TheMShip · 08/09/2019 19:58

No oh-fuck-bags here, but DH and I know where all the relevant stuff is. Our destination in a political emergency is overseas, so we'd have to book flights and that should give us at least a couple of hours to pack.

Maybe House of Cards wasn’t so far from the truth. Remind me what happened to Francis Urquhart

__ German business has said this repeatedly, but again for the hard of thinking:

The Irish backstop must be retained without a time limit if the Brexit withdrawal agreement is to be acceptable,
the head of Germany’s main business group said.

https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2019-09-06/brexit-backstop-must-remain-german-business-leader-demands?

“We need the backstop, and we reject any sort of expiry date,”
Joachim Lang, director general of the Federation of German Industries, said in Dublin on Friday.

The organization “fully supports the political declaration and the negotiated withdrawal agreement including the backstop.”

Lang’s intervention dashes Brexit advocates’ hopes that German industry would demand the backstop be dropped to allow a deal providing easy access to the U.K. market

If Corbyn’s coming round to a neutral(ish) interim PM, he’s getting serious. What kudos in stepping aside to save his country in its hour of need. It sounds as if he’s listening to the wise members of his party.

ContinuityError · 08/09/2019 20:03

Cummings will have been vetted

Probably basic security and counter terrorism vetting.

The level of vetting that I had to undergo to get access to ex MoD sites was at a level where my boss admitted that my NI born husband (despite him leaving as a toddler) had caused a massive problem.

DadDadDad · 08/09/2019 20:04

But LunarSea, isn't the formula something like "Her Majesty has graciously accepted my resignation...", so no way would the palace officials let Boris in to see Queen until they'd clarified with him who he was recommending as successor? Or if he declined to name a successor, they would ask the Speaker, or the Leader of the Opposition to say who commands the confidence of the House?

Hoooo · 08/09/2019 20:05

In the loop is on iplayer atm.

Remember when politics could be funny?

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 20:05

They cost about £250 for spare wheel flouncy if you have alloys. I have new fiesta and all cars in last come with foamy stuff unless u buy spare which is ridiculous. Perhaps we could save foam for Boris the Animal as I'm always waiting for him to start ' foaming at the mouth' wot with all that hand and arm waving and spluttering!?Grin

Camomila · 08/09/2019 20:08

In a 'state of emergency' I will crack open a few Gin and lay back and let it all pass over me whilst watching a video on constant loop of Berkow going 'Order!Order!

Alsohuman · 08/09/2019 20:10

My husband’s deep vetting involved me supplying my bank and credit card statements. It’s bloody rigorous. I doubt Cummings has been dv’d.

Peregrina · 08/09/2019 20:13

Ken Clarke as interim PM earlier on.

Who could possibly object to having an Independent as a temporary PM? It would be a fitting end to Clarke's Parliamentary career as one of the best PMs the Tories never had. I assume also that the increase in salary that the PM gets would help boost his pension, although in his case I doubt whether the few extra pennies it would give would make much difference.

Sostenueto · 08/09/2019 20:14

Of course we all know that not only has UK used NI as a negotiating strategy but so has the EU? There was a clipping of an interview last year with Tusk saying exactly that. NI has been used purposely by both sides ( even more by EU as they realise they have us by the balls with this). Just saying like....

Anyone been on a committee here? If you have how would you like someone coming in not in any way connected to organisation and taking over the chair from the chairman? JC IS the Leader of the OPPOSITION. No one else is. Protocol has to be followed in such circumstances.

pumkinspicetime · 08/09/2019 20:21

I think we might be beyond standard protocol, leave pushers certainly are.
I think a joint pairing might be sensible, maybe mother and father of house?

ListeningQuietly · 08/09/2019 20:23

Sostenueto
The person who writes the minutes defines the history.
Stalin understood that
Who is writing the minutes that record the decisions?

If its Cummings, we have a problem
If its a proper civil servant, the "record" will provide the route back

JustAnotherPoster00 · 08/09/2019 20:24

What’s the sauce (source) for this ken Clarke story? Top labour source is going to be tom Watson or someone anti Corbyn I just don’t see it being true

chomalungma · 08/09/2019 20:25

These aren't normal times. And we all know an election is coming soon.

Paul Brand@paulbranditv
NEW: Couple of SO24s coming up tomorrow (oh how we love them).
Understand cross-party group agreed tonight:

- One on revealing government paperwork on Operation Yellowhammer (No Deal scenarios)
- One on PM adhering to the rule of law (as he hints he might be willing to bend it)
