Johnson lost his first vote by 27.

The Commons take control again, and Johnson is now, with his majority gone, is seeking an election.

Whilst the feeling might be one of victory there is a definite sting in the tail.

Johnson has purged the party of 'trouble makers', meaning any replacements after an election are hard liners. And they will be in safe seats. Possibly many of which will be careerists parachuted in.

The party has split. The civil war is over.

Parliament has just lost some of its very best minds in the process. That bodes ill for us all in the long term. The polarisation has just jacked up a level. The centre has fallen even more.

There are no more moderates.

Polling suggests that Johnson won't be blamed for any of this and that's significant.

Take note of this tweet

Douglas Carswell @Douglascarswell
Boris Vs the political Parasites. Guess who wins across suburban Britain?

The optics are not about what you or I are seeing. Nor about what any of the politicial pundits are seeing.

The Democrats and the Media failed to see Trump coming... And this is what now concerns me. His optics are not bad with his core and targets.

Will Johnson be able to have his election?

If yes, I fear the polls look good for Johnson. People want 'Brexit over with' and don't want another extension. They may or may not understand the ramifications of that.

If no, then what? Johnson can do anything with his numbers. Does that mean potentially two governments and the Queen stuck in the middle? Or does he limp on, with no intention of doing anything but take us over the cliff by counting down the clock?

Or something else?

The Brexit Party and Conservatives now seem to have formally united one way or another. They have aligned with current politics alike the divided Opposition parties.

Tonight the penny might have dropped with a few Labour MPs too. They want May's deal to return. Its the only deal there is, in the absence of a Johnson plan and a Labour / Opposition plan. Too little too late...

This isn't going away as an issue either. Stoking up anger against the rebel alliance is a long term project for the fascist right.

Is tonight’s result a victory? Yes, but my fear is its potential to be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The battle today may have been won, but Johnson still looks set to win...

I'm a remainer but I support the WA. I think we need to leave. But No Deal is simply not an option for me. If it were voted for in a ref I'd accept it tho (the same way I accept we must leave).

RHTawneyonabus · 04/09/2019 21:38

I don’t get this numbers in the FTPA vote. Did a lot of MPs just not bother to turn up?

Camomila · 04/09/2019 21:38

I'm impressed at your quick counting prettybird you got there before Bercow.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 21:38

myriade That's why I said if both parties agree - any treaty can be amended if both parties want to
and repeated transitions would be an OK option while the UK govt decides what future trade deal it wants and can get through Parliament

ListeningQuietly · 04/09/2019 21:39

So Bozo has so far lost every vote since he became leader
WOW

Wenttoseainasieve · 04/09/2019 21:40

Labour Party line was to abstain

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 21:40

Did a lot of MPs just not bother to turn up?

Labour line was to abstain which was the same as voting against in effect

SansaSnark · 04/09/2019 21:40

Lots and lots of abstentions.

BJ having a go at Jeremy Corbyn right now. I'm not sure it's the right move. It will play well with his own audience, but I think a lot of remainers with little faith in Jeremy Corbyn think he has acted with integrity on this.

Oakenbeach · 04/09/2019 21:40

I don’t get this numbers in the FTPA vote. Did a lot of MPs just not bother to turn up?

That’s right.

TatianaLarina · 04/09/2019 21:41

So Bozo has so far lost every vote since he became leader
WOW

Great innit. Grin

OublietteBravo · 04/09/2019 21:41

Does Erskine May mean Johnson can’t try for another vote to get an early GE under FTPA in this parliamentary session since he lost this vote?

WhatwouldScoobyDoo · 04/09/2019 21:41

They are literally Time Lords ... love this, red .

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 21:41

Many MPs didn't vote, especially on the Labour side

because they didn't want a GE they would lose and / or one whose date BJ would amend to force No Deal while Parliament was dissolved

but they also didn't want to be seen to be voting against a GE

The FTPA requirement for a â…” majority required Labour to actively vote for it
They didn't

Oakenbeach · 04/09/2019 21:42

Looks like SNP didn’t vote for it either looking at the numbers...

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 21:43

Ah I see now about labour abstentions

Cwenthryth · 04/09/2019 21:44

So essentially abstentions count as a no? That’s silly, it should be 2/3s of the votes. Ah well.

So what now?
We wait to see if the lords filibuster the anti-no deal bill +/- Kinnock therefore-May-deal amendment
Monday everything stops until October and they all go and have theoretical debates at their conferences
Hmm, great

PoffleWaffleWoo · 04/09/2019 21:44

I am a GC Jewish woman, and I would vote Labour at the next GE. With gritted teeth, but I still would.

LyraParry · 04/09/2019 21:45

What options does BJ have now? Is he going to actually have to negotiate with the EU Shock?

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 21:47

Oakenbeach The WA wouldn't destroy Labour
They only really opposed it before because they were playing political silly buggers

Corbyn cba about the backstop, which is the sticking point for many ´Tories opposed to it.

The Tories would be in trouble from all those frustrated hedge-funders and vulture capitalist deprived of their loot.
Good.
Some will try to stir up Brexiter voters
BJ at least needs to show he tried to get No Deal, to reduce the otes going to Farage

However, the WA may even neutralise Farage - because we'd have left

"Not a bang, but a whimper" etc could be how Brexit goes off the boil
and eventually people calm down in transition limbo
so we can talk about a soft Brexit

prettybird · 04/09/2019 21:47

Didn't need to count camomila Grin

484 was the absolute number they needed and they didn't have it, so as soon as it was announced by the teller, I could press my pre prepared post Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/09/2019 21:50

Now what?

OublietteBravo · 04/09/2019 21:50

BJ seems to have been pretty adroit at backing himself into a corner. Is he still going ahead with proroguing parliament? Doesn’t starting a new parliamentary session require him to have the numbers to pass a queens speech? Tricky when you lost your majority (which required DUP support in any case) and then expelled 20+ MPs from your party.

Camomila · 04/09/2019 21:50

They're presenting constituency petitions now, the whole Brexit debacle makes it seem like politics is just a big game at times, it was nice to hear the labour lady talk about primary school funding cuts. The last few days has made me think better of a lot of politicians.

Belindabelle · 04/09/2019 21:50

News is saying if the bill gets passed into law by Monday then Johnson might try again on Monday for a GE.

Apparently negotiations going on to get the Lords to stop the filibuster and move it along quickly.
