Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

OP posts:
Ligresa · 02/09/2019 11:56

If there are shortages I will manage and feed my family on what i can buy or grow. Running out of baked beans doesn't scare me.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 12:01

carotts, parsnips, and a few sprouts in winter and that would be it

Yep, perfectly possible to survive happily on. We are spoilt for choice anyway and rely far too heavily on massive food miles. Might do us good!

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 12:06

Did it say "we'll survive " on the bus?
If you are foolish enough to think that body fat = basic nutrition that people deserve, you know fuck all about nutrition.

Parker231 · 02/09/2019 12:06

@Ligresa - but I don’t want to have to limit my diet because people voted to leave the EU without thinking of the consequences to the supply chain. Why shouldn’t we be spoilt for choice.

tisonlymeagain · 02/09/2019 12:08

Still not stockpiling - if things aren't available, we'll do things differently.

frozendaisy · 02/09/2019 12:13

Most of what we cook with is fresh which you can't stockpile. I am getting ground coffee in mind and some olive oil.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 12:14

We're so spoiled it's unreal. There's a climate emergency, we could all do with eating more local produce

Yup.

Parker231 · 02/09/2019 12:15

But the UK doesn’t produce enough food to supply the population which is why we have to import.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 12:16

What, you mean people didn't take into account your desperate need to eat a Tuscan bean salad if you feel like it? Bastards.

lazylinguist · 02/09/2019 12:21

What's the point of stockpiling 2 weeks' ' worth of food? Surely most people have 2 weeks' worth in their house most of the time? And you can't very well stockpile fresh food - it will go off.

It's ironic that people are being accused of playground 6 year-old behaviour when the original post definitely has a 'hah - told you so!' feel. Also a bit odd that eye-rolling is apparently such an offensive thing.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 12:22

I did laugh when i saw someone say they had a weeks worth of food.

oldwhyno · 02/09/2019 12:22

If in 2, 6, 12, 24 months time, your stockpiling proves to have been unccessesary, what comment will you care to give?

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 12:24

No one can create a mini Tesco in their home. But getting a buffer of food and other bits that suits your budget, space and mental health is what we are talking about. Why so sneery about that?

bengalcat · 02/09/2019 12:24

Not laughing or rolling my eyes but don’t feel the need to stockpile .

HappyHammy · 02/09/2019 12:24

www.telegraph.co.uk/food-and-drink/features/ten-amazing-british-cheeses-to-try-before-you-die/
all these yummy cheeses as well as the usual Cheddar, Stilton, Red Leicester and others that I can't remember.
I don't think I will starve and won't go into a coma

TheBigBallOfOil · 02/09/2019 12:25

If it turns out to be unnecessary, no biggie. It’s all stuff I’ll use anyway.

TheBigBallOfOil · 02/09/2019 12:26

Also how many people are going to come on here and tell us we can’t stockpile fresh food? We know that, dull bulbs. We can stockpile imperishable substitutes.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 12:26

If it's unnecessary, that would be brilliant. Because I'm not a snarky sneery BeLeaver. We can dip into our stash to save money. We only have stuff we eat.
I have plenty of fresh food dehydrated or frozen or home grown.
I'd love egg on my face? But what if you are wrong?

BertsFriend · 02/09/2019 12:27

I've bought a few tins of carrots and peas, and two freezer bags of broccoli/cauli florets because I have the space to store it. I'll buy more tins this month.

Just as an aside, I'm really surprised at the posters who assumed Silenceissilver experienced rationing in England during the second world war. Even after another poster had implied it was in Zimbabwe. Is the assumption here that all mumsnetters are British? That the only rationing there has ever been was in the UK (so during the 40's and 50's)? I'm not British, so my first thought was 'I wonder where that was'.

Theredjellybean · 02/09/2019 12:28

I heard someone on the radio yesterday saying there might be a shortage of ' raspberries, tomatoes and lettuce in November'
I did think... Well we really shouldn't be eating those things in November anyway they are not in season.
Would it be so awful if we actually ate what we should be eating.. What is actually growing at that time.
Much bigger issue though is who is going to be picking /harvesting the produce our farmers are growing?
Where I live farmers cannot get guarantees from seasonal workers from EU that they will be coming after Oct.
Maybe stockpiling some EU farm workers would be most prudent

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 12:32

@Theredjellybean , I have raspberries in my garden still. And lettuce on my window sill. I actually have a tomato plant still going and have tactics to ripen or a recipe for green tomatoe chutney.
I have the means to preserve, dehydrate and or freeze all of these. The lettuce can grow through the year or substitutes can.
So I won't go without. Other people will. This and more.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 02/09/2019 12:33

We can stockpile imperishable substitutes

But this is the rub. The imperishable substitutes you are stockpiling are already being stockpiled by supermarkets. The clue is in the name. They are imperishable, so there is no issue with supply, as they won't go off, and can be stored, and it doesn't matter if they are held up somewhere.

Also, why do people think they need to stock up on (for example) tinned carrots? We grow so many of the bloody things, they lie in piles rotting, and get fed to pigs or get incinerated. Why are you buying tinned pears when it is Autumn, and supply is British, would you buy tinned apples?

The ONLY thing I have bought is a big tin of Olive Oil, and that is because of cost implications, as I just realised I won't have any lettuce to put it on anyway Blush.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 02/09/2019 12:34

and I just realised

IDontBelieveYou · 02/09/2019 12:34

I have seven children, I’m not taking the risk that we’ll be okay. Those that think it’s about olive oil and Tuscan bean salads don’t understand how it all works.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 12:36

@ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave , and where will the supermarkets who also need space in their warehouses for Christmas keep all this stuff?
And who wants to be in a supermarket when people who were whining on here about the shortage of ice lollies are forced to get tinned versions of what they normally eat?
