Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

I'm a single mum who is financially struggling and have absolutely zero money left to stockpile. Otherwise I would. I just don't have anything left over

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 07:55

Best I can suggest if you haven't been adding it a tin at a time is
cookingonabootstrap.com/

Welliesandpyjamas · 02/09/2019 07:58

What a squabbly, first world thread ☹️

Shutupseaguls · 02/09/2019 07:59

I'm a single mum with nothing left to stockpile. Worst case scenario I have a couple of podgy cats and quite a few strays round here.

(That's a joke before anyone accuses me of being a monster)

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:06

@Welliesandpyjamas , first world and me with egg on my face would be a brilliant outcome.

BeanBag7 · 02/09/2019 08:13

The shortages will be for fresh goods with a shelf life of less than a week. You can't stockpile for that
No but you can stockpile for alternatives. Say 50 people who go into asda want to buy fresh oranges. There are none available so they each buy tinned satsumas instead. Now there are no fresh oranges and no tinned satsumas. So the next group of people buy tinned grapefruit as an alternative. Now there are no fresh oranges, no tinned satsumas or grapefruit.
The supermarket can't restock the tinned fruit until next week because the lorries have been held up at customs and tinned oranges aren't manufactured in this country.

It's easy to see how a shortage of only fresh food can lead to a shortage of all food.

May I point out that, despite all the people in this thread saying it’s bonkers and I’m not stockpiling, actually most people ARE stockpiling, incl Leavers. (There has been quite a few surveys about it).
The difference is that very few people actually talk about it in RL, even to family members (we certainly haven’t).

The other comment I would make is that stockpiling NOW, beg of September, isn’t going to create a crisis. SuPermarkets have time to replenish stocks etc... if people start buying more than usual. However, stockpiling and panic buying on the 15~20th OCTOBER WILL create problems and shortages!!
Personally, I’d rather see people buy tins etc... now than suddenly panicking around the 30th October. Much nicer and safer for everyone concerned

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:18

I can only hope that the people on here who say they are stockpiling Johnson's wank juice and not any actually useful are getting a buffer of food and supplies in in real life.

Myriade · 02/09/2019 08:19

@Silenceissilver, tbh I doubt that anyone who has lived through rationing (and have a proper recollection of it, eg they weren’t children at the time) will say it’s no big deal.
Unless they were also in very specific circumstances.
Eg family had plenty of money to buy stuff on the black market
Family had several farms so few issues to find foods etc....

Source please?

I'm not stockpiling. Even secretly. And have no intention of doing so.

Alsohuman · 02/09/2019 08:22

Mandarin stew! Jesus, I’d rather eat potatoes and cabbage.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:24

Beef stew with mandarins in it is not mandarin stew unless you are a shit Cook.

Alsohuman · 02/09/2019 08:27

It’s bloody disgusting, regardless.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:28

There's this brilliant thing called choice. Which we still have. And you can exercise it.

Alsohuman · 02/09/2019 08:32

I am exercising it @bellinisurge. I’m not filling my cupboards with food I’d never use or researching recipes reminiscent of Liz Jones’ character in The Vicar of Dibley.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:34

Lovely. And sneering at people who choose differently to you and are experimenting with different ideas to make a shit situation less shit? That's optional too.

Silenceissilver · 02/09/2019 08:35

WTF is this stuff about rationing? Rationing was shit. Really really shit. People were malnourished. Grow the fuck up you assholes talking about the blitz spirit
We’re not talking about WW2, we’re talking about Africa

Glurf · 02/09/2019 08:36

Well done.
I wished I could afford to stockpile then. I wish I could do it now.

But mostly I wish I could stockpile my ds's life saving medication. But expiry dates mean I can't.

What do you want me to say? Well done you on being able to afford to stockpile and not having a child whose life depends on medication that won't be available.

berlinbabylon · 02/09/2019 08:36

I do wonder what the best before date on the things in your stockpile are I checked the tins the other week and some said 2021. I don't think I need to worry - and best before means just that anyway.

I did find one with a 2017 date on it

Alsohuman · 02/09/2019 08:39

I wasn’t sneering at you @bellinisurge, I was turning my nose up at that vile recipe.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:39

And @Glurf , which is why people who can should. So that they keep the fuck out of the way of the shops and the NHS so that people in your position get the priority they deserve.

CrunchyCarrot · 02/09/2019 08:40

Everyone keeps saying "tinned goods". What you mean tomatoes?

Chickpeas, borlotti beans, red kidney beans, broad beans, butter beans, cannellini beans, baked beans, sweetcorn, carrots, peas, green beans. And yes, tomatoes. Also tinned pineapple, peaches, pears, etc. Not forgetting sardines, mackerel, tuna, salmon. Need I go on? Grin

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 08:40

@Alsohuman , we tried it so you don't have to. I was surprised at how tasty it was. I thought it would be shit too.

Evilmorty · 02/09/2019 08:49

Tbh I grew up in neglectful circumstances. I’ve eaten a 2 week old birds trifle for breakfast and a tin of sandwich paste. I wish I was joking! So there is very very little chance I’m ever letting that shit happen to my kids even if brexit doesn’t happen, so if that means buying a few tins extra each week, why would anyone else care or judge me for that.

I have 19 kitchen cupboards and a chest of freezer, so it’s not even a new thing, I’ve always had spares in for the days we run out of things.

Allington · 02/09/2019 08:57

My parents lived through rationing. They would be the first to say they would not want that again. They were fairly lucky, living in rural areas so a lot could be grown (and there was enough warning to turn land over to domestic needs) and had adequate nutrition. But rationing was still a desperate measure, and something they hoped their children and grandchildren would never need to experience.
