And the quick stuff it in a bag as we come home from holiday bag. Which is now spread on the floor whilst the recently unpacked bag is back under the stairs.

I hate all the faffy bits.

There is definitely plenty of space under there now though.

Gingerninja4 · 31/08/2019 06:58

Waiting in some more heavy duty shelving for under the stairs .
Brexit may been the push I needed but now could never go back even if cancelled like being prepared for bad weathet/illness,universal credit etc

Just catching up on these threads after a few weeks of pretending it's not happening. My stash still in good shape... but the tins are in a damp, leaky shed which will have got stupidly hot recently. Am worried now they'll all be wrecked... going to do a test run with some tuna and canelini beans and see if they're ok, wish me luck.
I will properly cry if they're all ruined.

HouseOrNoHouse · 31/08/2019 08:09

Something DH pointed out to me this morning: the cooling mats we got for the dogs can double as cooling packs for injuries. They don't need to go in the freezer and don't need electricity. If you have a pet, you might already know all of this but I thought it might be useful for people who don't.

If you decide to get one, test them in store. There are differences between brands. We got the branded version Pets at Home stores, which was a fiver more than theirs, and the difference was huge.

bellinisurge · 31/08/2019 08:12

I tried Jack Monroe' "sort of Brazilian stew" from tins last night with some Idaho instant mash. Dh had had a rough day and it was nice to spoon it up and slump in front of the tv for some Peaky Blinders binge watching while dd was in bed.
I think it suits making in advance (which I did) but it was yummy. Tin of Princes stewed steak and a can of basics broken mandarins . Plus a tin of black beans (I have a load of dried black beans but cheated with a tin that was on offer). Onion, tomato purée or ketchup, paprika, pinch of dried chillis, beef stock cube, water.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/08/2019 08:36

There's some quite good bulk buys at Home Bargains with free delivery over £50.00. Might be worth a browse!

bellinisurge · 31/08/2019 08:50

Here's a link to Jack Monroe's website and the recipe for the stew in question is now on there.
cookingonabootstrap.com/

Don't like her (as I keep saying) but she's doing a good thing making a lot of this available for free.

londonloves · 31/08/2019 09:01

That recipe is on my list to try Bellini. I've actually updated my shopping list based on some of her recipes.

HalloumiGus · 31/08/2019 09:17

Another reluctant checker inner. I would say we've spent an extra 50quid a month since Jan on stockpiling. Need to get Calpol etc still and try and get some fresh stuff that keeps well closer to d day.

Another one to say thanks for all the help and prompts since last year. I've had a prepper mentality for a while after very severe weather taught us to have food and water in the house but it was great to get such good lists and tips.

JessC23 · 31/08/2019 09:46

Some great tips, thanks all! I prepped pretty well for March, but we worked our way through most of the stash since then so have started again. Lots more fresh fruit and veg in the freezer this time and pumpkins etc still to be harvested at our allotment soon. I’m more nervous this time round though as we are expecting our second child two weeks into November so will already be an intense time and need to now make sure I’ve sorted all the newborn stuff earlier than planned, plus make sure things are in place for Christmas too.
On the plus side if No Deal doesn’t happen will have a well stocked and well organised first few months when the new baby is here so can concentrate on looking after him and our daughter and not worrying about getting Christmas etc sorted!

HalloumiGus · 31/08/2019 10:32

I got the Tin Can Cook book and it was cheap and recipes are very accessible. Thumbs up from me.

We have diesel cars and long commutes. Does diesel store safely at home? I'd like to have plenty in.

Hoooo · 31/08/2019 11:37

New shower bought.
Amazon pantry delivery arriving later

BlackeyedGruesome · 31/08/2019 12:40

Kelly Kettle arrived this morning. Plan is to take it to the beach on holidays etc as well as a back up.

Will test it in ex's garden.

BlackeyedGruesome · 31/08/2019 12:41

Back up for run of the mill powercuts not necessarily Brexit before anyone panics.

Hoooo · 31/08/2019 12:42

18 pk loo rolls for £3.19 at lidl today (so you're getting 9 free)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/08/2019 13:17

If you’ve got kindle unlimited www.amazon.co.uk/Preparing-Brexit-Survive-Food-Shortages/dp/1728958512/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&crid=38MUTM5JAVOEY&keywords=preparing+for+brexit&sprefix=Preparing+for+brexit%2Caps%2C152&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1567253256&sr=8-1 this book is currently free. Or only £1.99 on kindle app if not.

It has a 3day and 8 day menu plan, but it’s also got a few other recipes for stuff you can cook from the store cupboard. Between that and Tin Can Cook I might manage a reasonable variety of stuff.

Today’s plan is going to be sorting the medicine box/first aid stuff I think. And then a general stock check to see what I need to replace. I’ve been a bit slow in getting round to replenishing what I used from March’s stockpile.

Socksontheradiator · 31/08/2019 13:27

I am normally a think before I buy but twice this week I've bought kindle books purely on a poster's recommendation. Bit too easy, isn't it? Thanks Rafals
(The other is 'How to Be Right... In A World Gone Wrong')

GrouchyKiwi · 31/08/2019 13:33

Thanks for the book rec, Rafa.

Is it a bad idea to keep stocks of food in the garage? We had thought of doing that. Will maybe just do shampoo and things instead.

thenightsky · 31/08/2019 13:43

GrouchyKiwi I'd avoid keeping food in the garage. I put a tuperware of pasta shells in one of my garage cupboards and found it all nibbled by mice or something yesterday.

I now keep flour, pasta, rice etc in big plastic boxes (from Home Bargains) in the spare room.

BlackeyedGruesome · 31/08/2019 13:48

I sore washing liquid, compost, anti bac on thé garage.

Rest in flat.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/08/2019 13:54

OK, thanks. Will just keep non-food stocks out there.

@Bercows Hope you're feeling better.

You could always replace the Christmas chocolate. Grin

Wolfcub · 31/08/2019 14:24

Thank you for the new thread.

More brexit stash stuff ordered in tomorrow’s shop - bread making stuff (now the weevils have been evicted), tins, frozen ginger etc and some dry spices to make things taste reasonable, peanut butter, honey, butter to freeze etc
