I never knew this, but timber snobbery is a 'thing'. We recently had to have a large willow tree cut down, and I asked on my village FB page if anyone wanted to log it up and take 2/3 of the wood for free.

You'd think I was asking for the moon!! apparently willow is of very low calorific value (?) and therefore no one wants it... I didnt like to say we've burnt table legs in the past. So hauled the log splitter out and will gradually work my way through it.

Lidl have some shelf stable potato rosti with long dates for £1.79

Wolfcub · 13/09/2019 12:31

1.79 for bacon and cheese and 1.49 for plain

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/09/2019 13:05

They may regret rejecting it later.

Branston beans 4 for £1.50 in Morrisons.

CrunchyCarrot · 13/09/2019 14:03

I never thought about getting dried veg! Just as I was despairing that the freezer is now too full to fit in the coming raspberry season's fruit!

Am going to buy some dried veg and see what it's like, if I like it then I'll replace the freezer stocks with dried. Grin

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 14:14

@CrunchyCarrot , I dehydrated last year's crop of spinach - I had a terrible gardening year this year. I tipped some into an omelette on my day off. It was delicious. And didn't kill me.
You can get dried veg in the supermarket if you don't want the faff of dehydrator fun and games. It's trick to find - I saw it in Morrison's in gravy granules area.

FractalChaos · 13/09/2019 14:54

Re NHS and fuel - They have a plan, and the ambulances etc get first dibs. Transport aren't concerned about fuel atm.

CrunchyCarrot · 13/09/2019 14:59

@bellinisurge, yeah I am not keen on getting a dehydrator, but I found Buy whole foods online do a good range of all sorts of dried products! The organic dried tomato juice powder sounds interesting!

I'm glad the dried spinach didn't kill you - Popeye would be proud! Grin

Socksontheradiator · 13/09/2019 15:17

Do you know what the plan is, FractualPlan? In the petrol strike 20 years ago my DH had a pass to be first in line for fuel, due to his job. IIRC that shortage didn't last long.
I imagine there are a lot of people working in similarly important jobs, so I wonder at what point it stops.
I am within biking distance of work, thankfully.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 15:20

@CrunchyCarrot , "I'm strong to the finitch 'coz I eats me spinach ".
Thanks for the link. Hope others give it a go.

Dontlickthetrolley · 13/09/2019 15:42

This was in B and M for £1, normally between £2 and £3. Its dated 13th November, so if it all goes to pot will be one of the first thing we eat!

Grinchly · 13/09/2019 17:39

Those Lidl Rosti are good Smile

MINItrawler · 13/09/2019 17:44

Homebargains also do the rosti for around 79p. Not sure if it's the same brand, but it's got a brilliant date on it. DH likes a rosti.

Wolfcub · 13/09/2019 18:46

Glad to hear they are good @Grinchly

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 13/09/2019 20:57

My first aid kit bag is full. I'm thinking I need one for first aid, and one for first aid type medication. It will make it easier to find things.

MINItrawler · 13/09/2019 23:01

It's happened. I can't fit anymore in the cupboards. And I have a walk in pantry.

It's all in proportion - i.e it makes meals it's not just stuff.

My flour, grains, soup mixes are in giant jars and free of weevils.

I have a sensible supply of general medicines, to see us through minor ailments.

My freezers have fruit, veg, cheese and butter.

I can't thank you all enough. I'm low income. Large family. And in the last 18 months I've gone from week to week shopping to this.

They could cancel Brexit tomorrow and I'd still run like this. I'm prepared.

Thank you Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/09/2019 23:11

Good job MIN :)

I bought a Christmas pudding today, dated to 2021. I wondered if I should buy next years as well.

Snugglepumpkin · 13/09/2019 23:58

@MINItrawler
Well done :-)

It can be life changing if your income is not high to have a bit of food security.

Wolfcub · 14/09/2019 07:22

Well done Min

AllNewDay · 14/09/2019 07:52

@BercowsFlyingFlamingo: We use clear "click" storage boxes with a lid. If you can get your hands on one of those, they are great as you can see what is left when someone raids it without telling you. They were in the medium price range at Asda but I occasionally see them pop up on Marketplace and the like. Fairly sturdy, too.
We have a big one for bandages, plasters, dressings, alcohol wipes,...., a medium-sized one for OTC drugs and a small one with prescription meds. Keeping them seperate because I am paranoid about accidentally taking an antibiotic if all I want is a paracetamol.

Also holding on to some left-over prescription meds I'd usually would have returned, as we have some friends who could use these particular ones to tide over any shortage in supplies post Brexit. Most of them are expired now but the US army did a couple of studies on this and found that most medication in tablet form keeps upwards of 90% efficacy for 10 to 15 years, and we are well within that range. Certainly better than nothing :)

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 14/09/2019 09:06

@AllNewDay I've got some of these from M&S. they were a gift a few years back and I didn't have use for them then but now I have. Dd has got the two smaller ones so I'll get them back off her today.

Hell is ever closer - part 2
getupgonow · 14/09/2019 09:17

We do the same with medication/first aid. The click lock boxes are good (I think there's some on offer at Aldi at the moment).

It certainly won't hurt to have more storage boxes and have everything where you can find it.

AllNewDay · 14/09/2019 09:20

@BercowsFlyingFlamingo Oh, these look great, you going to have some very stylish first-aid kits!

Good things the usual collection of cosmetic bags on Christmas can be put to a good use Wink

Socksontheradiator · 14/09/2019 09:39

@MINItrawler well done you! I feel the same Flowers

Lex234 · 14/09/2019 09:40
