3 tins of black beans for that price is brilliant. what supermarket did you go to? I use loads of black beans and they cost 85p a tin

AnnaMariaDreams · 01/09/2019 17:11

I did a big prep shop today in Asda and Sainsbury’s, DH did one yesterday at Aldi.
Sainsbury’s had the bear fruit roll up things on offer. I normally refuse to buy as just sugar but as they are 100% fruit I bought a few boxes for DS for the stash. They also had dried strawberries/ raspberries on offer with no added sugar that will be good on cereal.
I also got coffee pods and Patak paste pots, I like those rather than opening a whole jar of paste.
In Asda I stocked up on cereal 2 for £4 and got lots of tinned veg/ beans and some chapati flour. We normally buy but reckon we can learn to make them.
I need to move onto longlife but fresh foods soon - tortillas, part baked baguettes, cheese (freezer already stocked), chorizo.

A couple of questions- I could devote a windowsill to growing spinach or rocket but no idea where to start - is there an idiot’s guide anywhere?

Anyone use an instant pot to do easiyo yoghurts - again I need an idiot’s guide please.

Perpetual spinach survives even my tender ministrations Grin. Strongly recommend it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2019 17:24

I'm glad I'm not relying on my potato harvest. From 9 plants I have enough for two sunday dinners. bum

NoWordForFluffy · 01/09/2019 17:46

Do you grow in the ground or bags? Our 'Christmas' spuds are currently growing. I hope they'll do OK (our first crop wasn't too bad; though we're not big potato eaters really).

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/09/2019 17:51

Oh heck. Haven't dug potatoes up yet.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/09/2019 17:53

I have some chitted spuds that I thought I may as well stick in the ground. That or the compost heap.

Do Asda have Cheerios on two for £4?

AnnaMariaDreams · 01/09/2019 18:00

It was weetabix choc chip minis I got but they had a few on offer.
For perpetual spinach
Do I need any special compost/ fertiliser?
What seeds are best?
Thanks

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 18:02

You don't need special compost. As for seeds, whatever you can get from the supermarket or wherever. It is real cut and come again stuff.

Have listened to the warnings on the Facebook preppers group and defrosted my freezer this week rather than wait till kids are back in school.

Had an order delivered today from Iceland to fill it back up, I had to stock up on Greggs Sausage Rolls for DS as it’s the only brand he’ll eat. They are my go to food when he’s refusing to eat so can’t risk being short.

Also ordered some part baked baguettes as DS loves them so they are a good back up if I can’t get the bread he likes (he’ll only eat one brand!) My plan was to buy some now and rotate, but they actually have BBE date of the end of November.

Iceland also have an offer on to get £5 off your next order if you spend £60.

EveLevine · 01/09/2019 18:18

@BlackeyedGruesome ASDA do have Cheerios on 2 for £4, but they have the smaller 375g boxes reduced to £1, which works out better value - if you buy 4 of those you’ll get 1,500g instead of 1,200g from the 2 for £4 offer.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/09/2019 18:26

@EveLevine, you're my kind of shopper! That's the kind of thing I work out (as well as per kg prices for true price comparison with different pack sizes!).

NoWordForFluffy · 01/09/2019 18:30

I just cashed in my TopCashback cash back and now have £51.30 to spend in Tesco on the way to me. I'll go this week as soon as the voucher appears in my in box. I've got a £1.50 voucher too, so will stock up on my bread flour, yeast etc. Plus get stuff like goose fat for the Christmas planning.

thecalmorchid · 01/09/2019 19:12

@HunkyDory69 your recipe for paneer is how I make it. Just wanted to add the whey that comes off make the most beautiful scones.

Two cups SR flour
Two tablespoons marg
Salt
Sugar
Whey to form into a soft dough

Form, cut and cook in hot oven (200) for 14-15 mins. Should sound hollow when the bottoms are tapped.

Really yummy and cheap.

I'm only just watching the highlights! 🙈🙈

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/09/2019 20:09

Thanks for the info on Cheerios.

I am just using the last few percent of dying battery life before tackling the shopping and finding D's something for tea. I got him back early and have nothing planned.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2019 20:31

I grew mine in big pots, I think they were too out of the way and didn't get watered enough.

I've had quite the wobble today.

SistemaAddict · 01/09/2019 21:10

I'll be buying Cheerios tomorrow then! I once went to a study day on nutrition and the head dietician for the Trust said Cheerios were one of the better cereals to eat due to the whole grains. She recommended malt loaf too for snacks but not with butter. Obviously porridge was the number one breakfast choice but Cheerios were the child friendly option over things like Rice Krispies, cornflakes, coco pops etc. I love Frosties myself. Without milk. Cereal is something we go through a lot of so it's a definite for the stash. Dd can devour a box of Krave in 2 days 😩 it's supposed to be 12 servings! I've got one box in the stash and 2 bags of porridge oats.

My ocado shop just arrived. It’s taken me 20 mins to put the food away. I haven’t started on cleaning stuff. I felt a bit sheepish taking delivery and my stash has now extended into another cupboard.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/09/2019 21:29

@Bercows, it's letting them start to grow shoots before planting them.

fluffy in a past life (before ASD ruled my life) I was an Accountant specialising in cash flow management so was always analysing stuff like this - old habits die hard 😂.

I have delivery passes for Tesco, Ocado and ASDA - not as expensive as it sounds only costs me £20 per year - so before I buy anything I check where it’s cheapest.

Starting to think about Christmas, I’m freezing stuff for Christmas dinner but do we think there’s a need to buy things like advent calendars and selection boxes too?

I’ve bought stuff for DCs stockings, and in October I’ll buy some generic presents like crafting sets and playdoh just in case, but do we really need to be worrying about Christmas? Part of me wants to buy everything by 31st Oct, but there’s this nagging doubt that I’m being paranoid!
