Flouncy - look in your flour and yeast. If it’s moving you’ve got weevils. Personally I chuck everything open/affected/not in a weevil proof container. Then clean the hell out of anything it’s been in - dishwasher your containers. Clean any holes they may have gotten in

GrouchyKiwi · 31/08/2019 17:09

Ugh. I had an infestation of weevils a couple of years ago. I think they came in some organic spelt flour I got from a farmer's market. I biffed a lot of stuff and then set up my pantry in lovely containers.

I have a spreadsheet, and can now put some things on it. Hooray! DH has been out and bought a 5kg bag of rice, some tinned toms, baked beans, loo rolls and pain relief.

you prob won't need BB dates if you practice stock rotation

Perhaps - but knowing me the tins will get 'disorganised' somehow! I have labelled all my tins/packets/jars with very visible expiry dates pats new label maker and so it's far easier for me to see exactly how old stuff is. Mind you there's a fair amount of stuff that doesn't expire until 2021 or 2022 so likely I'll have eaten all of it before then!

weevils shudder - that tale of woe inspired me to buy a few sets of thick plastic containers, I must say everything's far better organised now and just looks far nicer, too!

So apparently we are getting 'the leaflet' next week to tell us to 'prepare' for Brexit. Anyone else seen this thread re stockpiling? I am probably very late to the party but maybe some of you have not:

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/08/2019 17:54

I read that earlier. Or ten pages at least. There’s a limit to how much you can take on one thread.

CrunchyCarrot · 31/08/2019 18:00

FFS. T-shirts and mugs? They're wasting £100 million on that?? Anyway, what is the advice, just 'Get ready to leave?? What does that even mean?' Cue panic buying.

^ That should come with a warning... large picture of Michael Gove may be upsetting. Grin

Thanks @Orangecake123 Smile I do feel better today. I've resisted the chocolate and bought more. I now have a tub of heroes and a packet of galaxy buttons in addition to the quality street, after 8s, minstrels and Maltesers. I don't get them out until around the 20th December usually and am very strict about it Grin

I have lists in my notebook: food, freezer, household, toiletries.

OP posts:
CrunchyCarrot · 31/08/2019 18:10

They are printing it on flushable paper, aren't they??

They better be, and not that shiny stuff!!! Angry

The link to the article I put, that's where the ginormous pic of Gove is.

CrunchyCarrot · 31/08/2019 18:14

This reminds me of the 'Protect and Survive' leaflets given out just in case there was a nuclear war in the 70s, wasn't it? Perhaps it'll be a rehash of those. Instead of filling your bath with water, fill it with canned food!

So can we talk about protein a bit? Here’s my stash plan for protein based a little bit on practice heading into March and a little on camping knowledge and things I’ve gleaned from here. I’d like to add to this so interested in thoughts and others’ plans.

Fair to say I will have a fresh shop and therefore fresh meat before b-day and will get as much chicken, mince, beef etc in the freezer as I can. These are my fall backs.

Frozen meatballs - meatball pasta, meatball subs, meatballs and couscous or mash
Frozen sausages
Corn beef - hash, pie
Mattesons smoked sausage - I was skeptical but tested this thoroughly pre March - Carolina red rice, sausage pasta, smoked sausage and cabbage
Chorizo (fresh), more sausage and rice type things, chorizo hash, cooked in red wine or tomato sauce, booster for any bean dish
Peanut butter - mostly on toast
Eggs - limited lifespan but omlette, fried, boiled, with chips, scrambled, coddled, poached (good with chorizo)
Beans and lentils - I have some recipes lots of which are curry type or stew/casserole type so interested in more thoughts here

I’m also going to buy some tinned jackfruit for a bit of meaty texture if things drag on

Also M&S tinned curry is acceptable but not massive amounts of meat in a tin - I am debating whether to bother or not

Nice @Wolfcub . When I was really in a financial tight spot, I add dried soya mince to my food for protein. I know there are ethical and health ishoos with that but there ethical and health ishoos with Brexit.

SistemaAddict · 31/08/2019 19:11

I've bought soya mince from our local health shop and tried it in pasta dishes. We all like it and it's quick, easy and shelf stable. I need to buy some more.

As far as stock rotating goes, I've moved all the best before the end of this year into the cupboard and anything else is in the boxes and under the stairs. I'll do another stock take once I start using stuff.

I don’t have a freezer, so I’m not going to be able to do the topping up the freezer thing. For protein my list is fairly similar to yours.

Curries and stews with beans and lentils will feature. Probably a veg chilli with lentils as well.
Have a couple of tins of chicken curry and an Irish stew from somewhere.
Corned beef - hash, pie, whatever else is in Tin Can Cook
Tins of chicken in white sauce, stewed beef, minced beef - not going to get too many of these but they’ll do for a few meals.
Various kinds of tinned fish/seafood - tuna, salmon, mackerel, anchovies, crab. Mostly think I’ll be doing pasta with these but probably also some fish cakes.

CrunchyCarrot · 31/08/2019 21:09

You just know that someone will open the tins first!

does anyone keep a list/spreadsheet with their stash contents?

I have semi-detailed paper lists with expiry dates. I'm NOT a spreadsheet person, but love a nice list, and want to keep on top of the dates, and also wanted to be able to see what I need and what I have without having to root around in the shelves and mess up the order again.

Another weekly shop done, with small additions into the stash. It was very busy in our shops, but no sign of people buying any typical stockpily things (whatever that would be) or any shortages. I've just made an online order for some more OTC meds, including lots of Germoloids. Blush Brexit stress is not good for my constitution... [blush[ (I should get that dehydrator and get on those fruit!)
