Westminstenders: 30 days to save us all!

It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

wheresmymojo it is being widely reported now, on Sky News and in The Guardian.

wheresmymojo · 28/08/2019 09:37

The request is going to the Queen today but conflicting reports as to whether it starts from today or mid September...

DGRossetti · 28/08/2019 09:37

Last picture of Trump. Johnson and Farage

Lumisade · 28/08/2019 09:38

Prorogation. I feel sick. Fuck.

wheresmymojo · 28/08/2019 09:38

Consensus seems to be mid-September so still sitting until 11th or 12th

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 09:39

I’ve just sat down to the news

Horrendous...just disgusting

I mentioned the ‘plan’ to ds1 recently and he said thats what happened in nazi Germany....i did yell at Godwins at him!

But in all seriousness, can anyone a lot more politically astute than me confirm whether other governments both here and other countries have done this. Or point me in the direction of what websites i can look at

bellinisurge · 28/08/2019 09:40

Support prorogation and you are a twat.

SistemaAddict · 28/08/2019 09:45

I feel the urge to wrap myself in my duvet, drink tea and binge watch Murder, She Wrote. I actually want to cry.

wheresmymojo · 28/08/2019 09:47

Seems there's a reasonable case for it(?) - this is the longest Parliament has ever been in session and Parliament is always prorogued before a Queens Speech.

Obv there is another motive here but, on the face of it, not unconstitutional?

Looking forward to seeing some considered opinion on this from experts.

Grieve has said he'll back VONC.

DGRossetti · 28/08/2019 09:47

But in all seriousness, can anyone a lot more politically astute than me confirm whether other governments both here and other countries have done this

It's been discussed here a few times. If anyone is shocked, or surprised at this stage, they've not been paying attention.

Sorry if that's not helpful, but we wouldn't be here if the 80% of people who find politics "boring" pulled their heads out of the sand.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 09:47

Oop sorry

Should clarify that i know it happens at elections etc

But in this more specific instance i think it does seem like a move to stop something from happening, or indeed make something happen

wheresmymojo · 28/08/2019 09:48

The thing that is out of the ordinary is the length of time that Parliament is being prorogued for a QS apparently.

DGRossetti · 28/08/2019 09:48

Meanwhile, Priti is probably having to have some "me time" before she appears in public after reading this:

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/08/27/harvard_freshman_visa_social_media/

An already controversial policy of searching people’s mobile phones and laptops at the US border has returned to the spotlight after a 17-year-old student claimed his visa was revoked in response to social media posts written by other people that appeared on his feeds.

(contd)

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 09:50

Ive lurked a lot DG, ive also posted on a few threads

Ive read around the subject and followed links

Unfortunately for me my memory isnt good and i don’t remember everything i read

I was referring more specifically to other countries but ive found a bit more information about that which answers my own question

I am neither shocked or surprised as i knew this was a plan for a long time, nor do i have my head in the sand

Thank you for replying though

wheresmymojo · 28/08/2019 09:50

Hence why Javid's spending review was brought forward to next week...as original date was during the period they are expecting Parliament not to be sitting

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 09:51

My family and friends would be in hysterics if they read your comment implying that i found politics boring

Grin

I’ll carry on lurking...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2019 09:55

I don't actually know what to say.

Apileofballyhoo · 28/08/2019 09:56

Rufus I also mainly read here, rather than commenting, I know what you mean.

QuentinWinters · 28/08/2019 09:57

I was a bit Shock at dgrs comment too. There was a link about when parliaments have prorogued before that I read somewhere, will see if I can find it, but not an illustrious list. Tbh I think your son makes a good point about Hitler rufus

Government to ask Queen to suspend Parliament

Democracy in the UK is dead. Proroguing parliament in the middle of a war is normal. To imoe your view and ways of deling with a rpoblem when you know the majoity oppose it? Its ths the hallmark of a totalitarian country.
Does the Queen have enough power to oppose it in the name of protecting democracy and the cuntry as a whole?

I feel sick.

ImNotYourGranny · 28/08/2019 09:58

I'm genuinely horrified just now, reading breaking news updates with my chin on my knees. My brain can't process that Britain is on the cusp of suspending democracy and becoming a dictatorship. I knew it was predicted and I knew it wasn't 'project fear' but now it's coming into reality it's terrifying. I think Britain and it's people are now in a very dangerous place.

Myriade · 28/08/2019 10:00

Sorry I realised tis had already been posted....

Violetparis · 28/08/2019 10:00

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer keep asking questions on here if you want to, I do because I don't know everything and want to learn. My questions are usually answered without a sneering response.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 10:00

Thank you apile and quentin

Ive seen one or two posters give short thrift to questions that they feel come from a place of ignorance......bit of a surprise when it happens to you though Grin

Especially when virtually all you do is watch the news, read and rant with family Grin

(Thats an exaggeration....i watch netflix too Grin)
