Westminstenders: 30 days to save us all!

It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

(Pity we already sold a kidney -each- to be in catchment here in London, where it’s basically WAR)

prettybird · 27/08/2019 18:46

In fact, Reporting Scotland is just doing an item on how almost all 16 year olds (91%) stay on at school and 65% of 17 year olds Smile

woman19 · 27/08/2019 18:52

Anyway. He's clearly on an election footing. Can't really fault him and Cummings so far, and this and HS2 are all very popular ukip policies.
Tories will win by a landslide.

DGRossetti · 27/08/2019 19:02

He's clearly on an election footing

I wonder how far along the Labour Manifesto is ?

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 19:02

Yep.
Then they will do whatever they their US paymasters want

Hester54 · 27/08/2019 19:02

flouncyfanny Are you still banging that drum, 25% couldn’t be bothered to vote one way or the other, so let’s say it again, obviously you can’t seem to get it, out of the people that voted the majority voted to leave the EU, what part of that factual statement don’t you understand?

borntobequiet · 27/08/2019 19:06

Those images are exactly what is needed to see off Brexit. I’m not joking.

borntobequiet · 27/08/2019 19:08

I meant dontlick’s images.

Keir wins the hotness prize in those pictures.

woman19 · 27/08/2019 19:20

Keir wins Hero hair. Grin

Grinchly · 27/08/2019 19:24

I too think Johnson will win by a landslide.

Cant bear those furled - Nazi style - union flags behind the PM's podium at every opportunity.Hmm

They were even there, nestling close to the US ones, on the shot illustrating Crace's excellent article in today's Graun on the G7. Can anyone link?

Normally the EU flag is shown fluttering in the breeze, not furled military style.

It's not just the policies and statements and actions we need to watch.

It's the symbolism too.

prettybird · 27/08/2019 19:29

I have to admit to having developed a crush on soft spot for Dominic Grieve Confused

tobee · 27/08/2019 19:30

Grinchly why do you think Johnson will win by a landslide?

Lisette1940 · 27/08/2019 19:37

Because Johnson is pulling out all the pre election spending bollocks and many will be fooled.
Because he has one of the cleverest social media manipulators ever in the game in the lead
Because people will fall for it again, like they did in 2016
Because to quote DGR , half the population have a below average intellect and are not swayed by logical argument but emotion. This is magnified exponentially by social media. Many won't even connect cause with effect. They don't understand how representative democracy works, so don't know what they are about to lose. This is not a snobby swipe- it's reality and a fault of the education system over decades
Because this lot know this, and will milk for all it's worth

Grinchly · 27/08/2019 19:44

Sorry that was for tobee

As a nation we cannot be this thick

Not thick, just scared. Like 1932 etc.

They are also being deliberately scared by those with control of the media in its various forms, and public servants who should know better.

Inciteful pile on against those who met at Church House bodes badly.

@NadineDorries
These dangerous six are biggest threat to democracy our country has faced for many years. They will do anything in their power to overturn a democratic vote.

Grinchly · 27/08/2019 19:53

Aww prettybird me too.

Dominic Grieve is by far and away the most decent gov minister I've ever met in over 20 years of meeting gov ministers - he is absolutely lovely. A true gentleman who wears his intelligence lightly but also incredibly knowledgeable over a vast range of subjects if you happen to light upon something in conversation.

I fear for him, given what's going on currently.

woman19 · 27/08/2019 19:53

What I would watch out for in Scotland, very very closely over the coming months is sectarian troubles, perhaps being helped along by those who don't have Scotland's best interests at heart.

Grinchly · 27/08/2019 19:54

Hang on woman who are these public servants who should know better Hmm?

woman19 · 27/08/2019 19:56

@lewis_goodall
I went to two major political events today. Both sides were accusing the other of orchestrating coups. Both sides meant it.

We are in extremely dangerous territory.

Isn't an MP a public servant, Grinchly?
