Westminstenders: 30 days to save us all!

It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

Sky News had just broadcast footage of the Labour team coming in and specifically said that that was all that they were allowed to film Hmm. Still photos might have been different - and I haven't seen the BBC coverage yet.

That is interesting to know, tx - be great if Type 1 Diabetes was curable, I agree.
Yes, better not to get too steamed up about it - gets you nowhere.
It's just the randomness of it, the lies (my PIP assessor said I'd refused to try the physical assessment he set me - he did no such thing, didn't even ask me) and the fact you cannot ask for a mandatory reconsideration without potentially losing all your benefits (my local CAB says never ask for a Reconsideration as they always 'downgrade' by policy in their opinion). I was surprised when I read Cameron claimed DLA as I would assume he didn't 'need' it. His child had every right to it but it's awfully sad that DC himself didn't learn a little more compassion for other disabled kids and their parents too, whilst his family went through their own very painful loss.

Hazard you are far too nice to be a Hallmark card :)

Isn't the Church House meeting a different (and later) meeting to the morning's cross-party talks? Confused

woman19 · 27/08/2019 17:21

Does seem odd, prettybird I agree. Great that they met though and it's annoyed one or two, seems like.

Ooh look, they are inciting violence again.

Must be Tuesday.

@davidallengreen
Oh, we now have Reichsfeindes

@Conservatives
These 6 politicians are plotting to cancel the votes of 17.4 million people.

Surely it is, if you believe hard enough ?

woman19 · 27/08/2019 17:31

This is great from the tories: well argued, constitutionally accurate and thoughtful commentary on parliamentary democracy.

Not dictatorial at all.

cherin · 27/08/2019 17:31

Well, I have hope, because scientists are working at all sorts of things to trick pancreas to produce insulin again. It’s science, though, not beliefs ;-)
(And a lot of money- which not all drugs companies want to invest, particularly not in the USA where they can sell the same insulin invented decades ago for 1500£/vial....vultures)

One of DBs areas of research in the US. His role is using computing power you can't even imagine to try and speed the process up.

DGR

My senses drowsy became, as though of Hemlock I had drunk.

Shurely: "My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains
My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk..."

I did Keats for A-level and still remember chunks of it 50 years later.

You're right about The Eve of St. Agnes - always thought it was a bit dodgy. Although no-one mentioned such things in those days; if it was classical, it was fine. Like a lot of Greek mythology.

woman19 looks to me like an easy way of collecting names and addresses for targeting in a GE.

cherin · 27/08/2019 17:41

(Fact check- it is apparently NOT the same insulin synthesised in 1922 and sold as a patent for 1$. Every time the patent is re-registered they state it has been tweaked to work better, keep longer or stay longer in pens etc. In my mind it’s is still the same fundamental compound, but I don’t know how much research and money has gone in those tweaks. I just wish they would get faster to a permanent cure!)

DGR can he fix the Natwest website

If it ran on a Cray ...

I've mentioned a few times, but when you live by a "not a penny over" sort of culture, you have to accept things simply failing. Unfortunately it's become so ingrained in English business culture that it's impossible to see it. Just remember when someone is bragging about how they are x% efficient, then you only have 100-x% protection against a clusterfuck. Now in some cases that's fine. There are compensating controls, and you don't need to have redundancy at the point of failure. But generally you do, and if you don't .... well.

Just remember all UK banks have been in a race to offload as much "cost" as possible these past years to ensure they look like they are "growing" and able to return those dividends they need to.

I used to start every DR/BCP meeting at my last employer (and insurer) trying to remind them that in reality they were an IT outfit that happened to do insurance on the side. No one listened of course, but at least it got minuted, and referred to when the inevitable outage happened and directors got cross.

woman19 · 27/08/2019 17:51

It does Apileofballyhoo. Marvellous work.

So pleased they're bringin back GBH against little children. That'll learn them.

there will be concern in some quarters over a package of disciplinary measures that include a renewed emphasis on exclusions and allowing teachers to use “reasonable force” to improve behaviour

allowing teachers to use “reasonable force” to improve behaviour

Here we are, right at the top of the slippery slope.

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 18:09

I'd be delighted to join you on the fiery elevator to hell :)

ListeningQuietly · 27/08/2019 18:23

The education reforms are still designed to leave those responsible for finding school places without the right to provide them

Same as housing policy allows councils to borrow to purchase commercial property but not domestic property, even though they have the responsibility to provide housing.

Such broken thinking SadAngry

prettybird · 27/08/2019 18:30

Only just noticed what Welby was saying today (referred to down thread). He can fuck. right. off. Angry

Just as well a) I'm not religious Wink and b) the Church of England is not the Established church for the UK Wink

He does not speak for me. Nor Scotland. Nor most people. Whatever he might like to think Hmm

Dontlickthetrolley · 27/08/2019 18:37

And I thought these were the official Church House meeting photos - loving Larry Grin

prettybird · 27/08/2019 18:41

Fortunately (says I selfishly Blush), the education reforms don't apply to Scotland Grin. We still have fixed catchments (technically two: non-denominational and RC denominational) and no "Academy" schools. The English politicians (and some parents) would hate it though as there is only limited choice via placing requests, which will only be accepted if there is space at the requested school. But at least the angst before primary and secondary school is minimised (and none at the 6th form equivalent level as our secondaries go all the way through).

cherin · 27/08/2019 18:43

And you don’t charge 9.25grands a year at uni...This Scotland sounds more and more appealing....I’ve got an office in Edinburgh and one near Aberdeen, I should get to know them better ;-)
