Westminstenders: 30 days to save us all!

It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

At school we did choral poetry and one of the poems we recited was The Lotus-eaters

Ah, I was referring to the W. Somerset Maugham (crazy name, crazy guy Grin) short story. It was in a book of short stories (rather surprisingly Grin) with Doris Lessing and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I do find myself idly wondering how many of the people I took Eng. Lit. with could even remember doing those authors, let alone the plots of their stories ... since that was the last time I read them.

Anyway, for fans of Maugham, or short stories, it's well worth a read. There's probably a summary somewhere, but I'd urge folk to treat themselves.

Peregrina · 27/08/2019 16:46

It just seems so clear that once the result came in they should have actually taken stock, looked into what it actually meant and found out what they actually had a mandate for ... because it probably wasn't 'leave' to begin with.

Absolutely, and a better PM than Cameron, May or Johnson would have said so - and after some research said "this is what we can achieve." Which would probably have been an EEA type arrangement, and most people would have said, OK, that will do, it's a good enough compromise. Those who want Sovereignty and to not have to deal with the ECJ on principle, would have been happy, the NI/RoI border situation could remain undisturbed, probably the same with Spain/Gibraltar. The racists and xenophobes wouldn't be happy, but we are constantly told by Leavers that it wasn't about immigration! Light bulbs, vacuum cleaners, bendy bananas - all things which come via international laws or agreements initially.

Welby can fuck off

DGRossetti · 27/08/2019 16:46

And why it was considered suitable for teenagers to recite (very druggy), I don't know.

My senses drowsy became, as though of Hemlock I had drunk.

They were all at it Grin. And arguably the bits of Keats "St. Agnes Eve" that they tried to keep from us (my DM was not amused we had an "abridged" version ...) is pretty rape-y from memory. Although it does have an old lady dying in the freezing cold, so was a good preparation for the coming winter ?

I can't be overjoyed at the spectacle of the bloody Church being dragged into this. Archaic remnants of the bloody (literally) Roman Empire's equivalent of right-wing appeasement/ control of the populist poor which large civilizations invariably seem to have to create.

I'd rather it was the bloody Queen. And JustAnotherPoster was right about needing her being a sorry state of affairs.

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 16:52

65 days...

prettybird · 27/08/2019 16:54

DGR - there are also all the areas for which the EU has unilaterally put in contingency arrangements for time limited periods, like Open Skies, freight transport arrangements (amongst others).

That means that the "cliff edge" date might not be 23:00 on 31 October - but the cliff edge has only been moved further away. It's still there Sad

DGRossetti · 27/08/2019 16:55

I'd pay more attention to the CofE if they opened all churches to the homeless, and people turning up for their Sunday soft-soap-soul-massage were to told to fuck off out and do something for the poor like Jesus said.

I await cries of "it's not that simple" from a crowd of steaming hypocrites who tell me to follow a book which makes it crystal clear that it is that simple.

I've just remembered who one of the UKs biggest landowners is, I wonder why ?

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 16:55

Justin Welby can just FUCK OFF

He knows that the average age of the Anglican Communion is 72 and that most voted leave (including the Dutch WW2 survivor in my own church...)

His pandering to these fucknuggets - whilst knowing the risks to the poor and vulnerable - leaves a very sour taste in my mouth.

"Suffer the little Children" indeed...

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

DarkAtEndOfUK · 27/08/2019 16:55

Why out of interest should a cancelled speech set the Guardian off on election speculation? Is it just wishful thinking? I can't see how a General Election at this point would benefit either main party based on the last elections showing. It'll just give us another hung parliament with the Lib Dems suppressing the urge to swear again as kingmakers.

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 16:56

...and yes, I realise I'm probably gping to hell 😊

DGR - there are also all the areas for which the EU has unilaterally put in contingency arrangements for time limited periods, like Open Skies, freight transport arrangements (amongst others).

Which makes the t+10-9s event even more complex ... somethings will work, but may still rely on others that aren't.

DarkAtEndOfUK · 27/08/2019 16:57

Blackadder said that hell has all the best people and hobbies Hoooo. As this thread shows: you'll have us as company Smile.

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 17:03

Apologies...it was John Agard.

Sorry John!

Coffee In Heaven
You’ll be greeted
by a nice cup of coffee
when you get to heaven
and strains of angelic harmony.
But wouldn’t you be devastated
if they only serve decaffeinated
while from the percolators of hell
your soul was assaulted
by Satan’s fresh espresso smell?
— John Agard

Hoooo · 27/08/2019 17:04

So Labour only allowed the cameras at the cross-party meeting to show the Labour team entering Hmm

So much for a cross-party approach Angry

DGRossetti · 27/08/2019 17:07

I prefer AC/DC:

Hell ain't a bad place to be

DGRossetti · 27/08/2019 17:08

So much for a cross-party approach

No so much cross-party as cross parties Grin

woman19 · 27/08/2019 17:13

prettybird the Mirror journalist said the picture was taken before the meeting started, so just labour then. Lots of pictures of the Church House Meeting of all the parties together.

Ooh Hooo John Agard, just as good.

Flag

What’s that fluttering in a breeze?
Its just a piece of cloth
that brings a nation to its knees.

What’s that unfurling from a pole?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that makes the guts of men grow bold.

What’s that rising over a tent?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that dares the coward to relent.

What’s that flying across a field?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that will outlive the blood you bleed.

How can I possess such a cloth?
Just ask for a flag my friend.
Then blind your conscience to the end.
