Fourth, our willingness to “keep calm and carry on” will be much less than was the case in 1939 or 1914. We are not at war. We are divided among ourselves. Our government is representative of an extreme, not of a broad national coalition. Half the country expects Brexit to be painless or quickly beneficial. The other half sees it as a self-inflicted wound. Neither of these constituencies seems likely to put up with much pain for the good of the cause.

"Keep Calm and Carry On" was never used during the war.

Oh yes it was, but it had limited circulation. A rare copy was discovered in 2000 and started a trend.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Calm_and_Carry_On

It was also a very good encapsulation of the mood of the Humphrey Jennings documentaries that showed real people going about their lives.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 07:54

I am trying to look at the facts Helmet rather than the headlines. I am hoping that the stockpiles and dedicated shipping channel are going to be effective.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 08:08

so which is it? facts or hope?

so unlike bma and all medical groups you think there will be no problem with medical supplies or staffing in the event of a no-deal brexit.

is that now the argument in favour of brexit then: 'i hope stockpiling will be effective'

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:09

Definitely facts not hope.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 08:09

they should have put that on the side of the bus:

'i hope stockpiling will be effective'

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:10

I have never been in favour of Brexit but things have moved on and we now have to live with the reality that it’s happening.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 08:11

from 'lets give £350 mil to the nhs' to 'we hope stockpiling will be effective'
my god, it must be so painful to have fallen for all that. Grin

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:12

I voted remain Helmet but make your ridiculous assumptions if it makes you feel better.

Iggly · 22/08/2019 08:13

The only ones who can stockpile are those who can afford to.

What about all of the food bank users (for example) who just don’t have the cash to buy extras?

The lack of empathy is striking from the Leave camp.

Fucks sake.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:14

I was referring to stockpiling by the Government actually.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 08:15

it was a general point entirely in keeping with my argument that brexiteers have 'changed their tune'.

Iggly · 22/08/2019 08:15

Fair enough and sorry, but again - prices will rise even with stock piling.

Although why would the government stockpile goods for businesses? It’s up to the likes of the supermarket to stockpile - the government does not supply private business.

GingerPCatt · 22/08/2019 08:17

Does it help if it’s on a bus?

The Spirit of the Blitz
Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 08:18

you can chose to think boris and his right wing cronies are going to protect us in the event of no deal but thats not a fact supported by medical experts, trade specialists - and even the govts own report.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:18

The rise in prices really worries me. I think the only thing we can all do now is try to keep our heads, stop the aggressive language and keep holding the Government to account to make sure we can minimise all the negative consequences of Brexit.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:20

A lot of people on this thread are just the opposite end of the spectrum of the people who voted leave and talk about winning wars and the Blitz Spirit.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 08:22

from other mn thread:

*Drug shortages are almost inevitable

  • Equipment shortages are almost inevitable (single use equipment such as cannulas, surgical sets, oxygen masks)
  • There are already very high vacancy rates in many trusts with a 40% reduction in EU staff applications.
  • Cost will escalate hugely resulting in less money to spend.
  • Food shortages may well impact on catering suppliers
  • There is likely to be significant staffing shortages is supplier workforce’s; the people working behind the scenes are the group of EU nationals less likely to have applied for settled status - the delivery drivers, the taxi drivers, the contract cleaners, laundry staff, porters.
Increased staff sickness is likely to follow due to validation of racism and increased abuse towards non white British staff. The staff survey results post Brexit are already showing an impact, sadly*

Thing is How if your hopes don’t come to fruition and there is an interruption to insulin supplies as Operation Yellowhammer started could be a possibility, then what happens to my DH?

I have never been in favour of Brexit but things have moved on and we now have to live with the reality that it’s happening.”

No we don’t. Parliament could be recalled tomorrow and revoke Article 50. BoZo’s refusal to do so is pure dogma.

Think about what you’re saying people. Blitz spirit? I hope stockpiling will be effective? Keep calm and carry on.

Oh FFS. We are not at war. We were a successful, first world country just 3 1/2 years ago. “We” actually voted for this. Unbelievable.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:29

My DP is disabled too. I keep a regular eye on the NHS directives designed to mitigate the foreseen problems. I am just trying to keep positive and sensible.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:30

I have never said anything so stupid and trite as the things I am being accused of saying. Read my posts before you misquote Me.

CherryPavlova · 22/08/2019 08:32

I think the fatalistic keep calm, carry on, not worry, we can’t do anything approach is madness.
We can do something. We can pressurise government to rescind A50. We can pressurise government for a vote on a no deal exit.
We certainly could all pull together against a common enemy but unfortunately whilst the war had Hitler to rally against with a united hatred, Brexit has torn people apart.

“I am trying to look at the facts Helmet rather than the headlines. I am hoping that the stockpiles and dedicated shipping channel are going to be effective.”

You can have as many shipping channels as you like, won’t stop fresh food rotting as it sits in customs queues for 3 days.

PostNotInHaste · 22/08/2019 08:35

So far since the referendum I have been called a citizen of nowhere, a traitor, seem abuse thrown at my fellow nationals of my dual nationality, had huge amounts of stress over situation with DD’s partner and now saw in a national newspaper that there is even a tiny possibility of a disruption in supply of insulin which my DH needs to survive. Is it any wonder that I have turned into the opposite end of the scale? And I wake up daily thankful my Mum and DH’s parents has the good sense to pop their clogs before all this as goodness only knows what would be happening as my Mum was an EU citizen living here since the 60’s and my PIL had buggered off to Spain.

Much though it saddens me I can see we need to leave now but in a sensible way. To be at the point where we are invoking war rhetoric is utter, complete insanity. It is totally unbelievable and beyond disgraceful.

The Government have shown themselves to be beyond incompetent time and time again. We are pitied and at the same time the laughing stock of the world. Matt Hancock said last year he can’t guarantee there will be no deaths. Though I understand you have good intentions, hoping at this moment just doesn’t cut it on any level.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 08:35

The dedicated shipping channel I was talking about refers to the shipping line for medicine, not fresh food Ohflippineck.
