Fourth, our willingness to “keep calm and carry on” will be much less than was the case in 1939 or 1914. We are not at war. We are divided among ourselves. Our government is representative of an extreme, not of a broad national coalition. Half the country expects Brexit to be painless or quickly beneficial. The other half sees it as a self-inflicted wound. Neither of these constituencies seems likely to put up with much pain for the good of the cause.

Revealing that’s absolutely not what I am saying or what I have said.

Mamamia456 · 21/08/2019 22:47

Fafoutis - What a rude thing to say about someone's grandmother.

FaFoutis · 21/08/2019 22:52

WTF was rude first. Don't blame me. (Do you read the Daily Express by any chance?)

JazzyJelly · 21/08/2019 23:16

My grandmother lived through the war. She voted remain because she wants to avoid another at all costs, and sees the EU as a useful tool in keeping peace.

Mamamia456 · 21/08/2019 23:42

Fafoutis - You come across as very immature.

FaFoutis · 21/08/2019 23:56

No, Mamamia, I do not come across as very immature.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/08/2019 00:37

Pesky bloody Poles, coming over here, flying our planes, defending our skys.

Thanks @TooTrueToBeGood it's lovely for me that people remember my grandfather's sacrifice. When people talk about Polish people it breaks my heart. People fought and died and they weren't all British.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 06:24

over 40,000 people died in the blitz- those were the days, eh!

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 06:30

correction 60000 killed, 85000 seriously injured.
juliet gardiners 'wartime in britain' is a brilliant thoroughly researched book on this.
if anyones says 'brexit will be fine, we lived through Ww2' you know you're dealing with an idiot.

Iggly · 22/08/2019 06:31

The Blitz spirit message was propaganda back then as it is now.

The people mostly impacted by WW2 were the poor and working classes. Propaganda was about keeping people from rioting, a message of “we’re all in this together”..... a bit like austerity and Brexit.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 06:38

interestingly, road fatalities incredsed by 100 percent compared to pre-war - 600 civilians a month- because of the blackout.

thats the spirit. Hmm

GingerPCatt · 22/08/2019 06:54

As (I think it was) Mark Steele said “No one voted for the blitz!”
And, no violence of course, I can’t forgive those who did vote for this.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 07:10

the idea that we'll pull together with the same people who are metaphorically bombing us is bizarre.

PostNotInHaste · 22/08/2019 07:16

To apply war time language when we’re not at war is extremely surreal. For the record if things get tough I will not keep calm and pull together, I am going to moan like fuck at ever possible occasion to anyone I know is pro No Deal.

To those who I know voted Remain or have changed their minds like my elderly neighbour then I will share my allotment produce and be helpful.

For the rest of my life I will never be able to forget that I read leaked documents from the Government suggesting a disruption to insulin supplies. In the U.K. in 2019.

Iggly · 22/08/2019 07:18

It’s quite telling IMO. And a logical extension of the way in which the Leave campaign was fought =

Set up the EU/Immigration as “the enemy” and stir up peoples emotions as a result. That’s why there’s a complete failure of logic or planning to the Leave response to brexit. It’s all based on fear.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2019 07:19

Johnson 's careful use of the word "collaborator" was just amping this up.
Fucking disgraceful. That wasn't a slip of the tongue.

PostNotInHaste · 22/08/2019 07:21

Yes agree with you both, it’s absolutely chilling Sad

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 07:21

brexiteers havent got anything else now.

its fascinating to see how they've gone from how fantastic the new deals will be and woo hoo freedom to it wont be armageddon and we got through WW2.

the thing is they're in such denial they dont even get they've gone from 'sunlit uplands' to 'not many peoole will die'

Mamamia456 · 22/08/2019 07:24

Fafoutis - That's the sort of thing a child would say "He/she started it, don't blame me it's not my fault."

Why are you asking me if I read the Daily Express?

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 07:33

Where is it being said that not many people will die? And how are people expected to die because of Brexit?

JingsMahBucket · 22/08/2019 07:40

@BrexitBingoGenerator thank you! I’ll see if it’s downloadable.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 07:43

you haven't heard of likely medical shortages? have you looked at operation yellowhammer? did you know that all medical groups - from radiographers, midwives, surgeons think brexit will be catastrophic for patients?

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 07:44

no deal will be catastrophic that is, brexit with a deal will just be a gradual decline of the nhs.

howwudufeel · 22/08/2019 07:50

Mass deaths Helmet?

Helmetbymidnight · 22/08/2019 07:52

what do you think nodeL brexit means?

if people cant get their meds then they will die- just as if there arent enough doctors and nurses then they will die- do you not get that?
