Johnson likes publicity.

Any attention is good attention. Whilst you are talking about how crazy his idea is, the less you come up with your own.

And there it is. The lack of plan to stop no deal. Just a bunch of idiots who argue over who is more right about politics without offering up a practical solution.

Unable to see their own flaws.

And leading us ever closer to the cliff edge and operation Yellowhammer.

@prettybird, sorry, not your poll. The other one which BCF said would give a 40 seat majority.

That Liz Truss photo

My first thought

(RIP to the much missed Kirsty Sad)

Is it today that Boris meet Angela Merkel? That will be interesting. I can't imagine her being tolerant of his empty bluster or rhetoric. She strikes me as a no nonsense sort of person.

She's down to earth, but very polite
I hope (forlornly) that BJ doesn't embarrass us too much in Berlin

She had a high opinion of the UK and invested a lot of effort in the relationship .... then she had to deal with Cameron leaving the EPP group

Since then, it's all been going down the toilet

In theory, Boris won't need a translator ?

Although when he did his "Dreams of Rome" documentary (which I can highly recommend) I noticed he swerved German, but was happy to speak in Italian and French. It was actually a refreshing breath of fresh air that they subtitled him, rather than overdubbing.

One of my lesser hobbies is catching translation gaffes in TV, where it's painfully obvious that someone has Google translated something and totally missed a more subtle meaning. Although it's not just news ... "Montalbano" has had a few all-too-literal translations that lost the nuance.

My friend is a politician here where I live. He tells me that Angela Merkel's position has always been to try and be as accommodating as possible to the UK to keep them as close as possible. Whereas Macron is more 'lets just be done with them'. It'll be interesting to see if that changes once they're exposed to the Boris virus.

ZazieTheCat · 21/08/2019 14:33

BCF Funnily enough I know someone in Scotland who wanted to fit out shipping containers to rapidly house the homeless.

He was really distressed about the amount rough sleepers he saw in Edinburgh. So he thought he’d buy some shipping containers, stick them on a yard he has, fit them out inside like caravans and that’d be better than sleeping rough or in a hostel- own front door/safe space kind of thing.

He phoned up to get some advice about it and was basically asked a lot of questions about how he’d comply with a lot of regulations on everything from building standards to adequate supervision and support from vulnerable. He quickly really that in practice it’d be impossible to do.

He’s a good guy, so he realised it was one of those things- he’d good intentions but no idea how to really make it work.

The biggest U.K. petition ever has just closed. It started gaining pace again recently and picked up a lot of signers from more Brexitty places. The map is interesting. Many in Ken Clarke’s constituency voted to Revoke: makes you wonder if a respected MP can influence the way their constituents think.

However, it’s all a bit late. And Jon Worth’s flow diagram has Revoking down as very low or zero possibility.

So we found a leaflet from my Labour prospective parliamentary candidate on my doorstep this a.m. She's momentum (and Little OJ) backed.

I ripped the leaflet in two in much the same way that I used only reserve for Tory leaflets.

Angry

Well if no-deal is going to happen, then it's 100% and any and all other alternatives are simply zero.

So everything is going as planned.

@tobee Why? Labour has promised a second vote with a remain option. If that's not good enough for you, what is it that you actually want?

DGRossetti · 21/08/2019 14:42

Incidentally, not quite sure why anybody with two brain cells to spare thinks the government isn't quite happy to trade peoples lives for their ambitions. It's what they do. They have deluded themselves into the same frame of mind Eisenhower and Montgomery must have been in planning D-Day, knowing thousands of men would die. But they still went ahead.

The narrative has (once again) shifted from "surely Brexit can't be worth all this" to "now we're* sacrificing this, Brexit has to happen".

(*= when I say "we", I do mean "you plebs" of course ....)

C'est magnifique. Mais ce n'est pas guerre ....

HesterThrale · 21/08/2019 14:49

DGR Well if no-deal is going to happen, then it's 100% and any and all other alternatives are simply zero.

Personally, I’m not sure it’s a dead cert. The flow chart has No Deal at 16% and a GE at 59%.

Which of course I’d prefer to believe (once people have realised the true nature of BJ and his government.)

Nobody can really be sure what will happen.

Fair point.

borntobequiet · 21/08/2019 14:52

The Conservatives thought the 2017 election would be a walkover because they were - what was it - 20 points ahead in the polls?
But it wasn't such a good idea after all.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2019 14:59

Why? Labour has promised a second vote with a remain option. If that's not good enough for you, what is it that you actually want

Not much use once we've crashed out with no deal, though.

QueenOfThorns · 21/08/2019 15:00

If we’re talking about the flow chart, there’s an interesting 38% chance of us asking for an extension without a good reason for one. Presumably that therefore needs adding to the no-deal %, as it seems unlikely that we’d get one...

BigChocFrenzy · 21/08/2019 15:04

Thanks, Flouncy but I was wondering about rate after No Deal, especially 6 months in

  • obv we can't know until it has happened
BigChocFrenzy · 21/08/2019 15:10

" No Deal at 16% "

Upthread I put No Deal at 95% and red agreed that's realistic

imo, too many Remain wonks are unjustifiably blasé about stopping No Deal, which is one factor making it so likely

They are fantasising, not planning

DGRossetti · 21/08/2019 15:13

If we’re talking about the flow chart, there’s an interesting 38% chance of us asking for an extension without a good reason for one.

Based on what, pray tell ?

If nothing else, it's clear the Boris policy is one of scorched earth. The only way there could be any chance of an extension is without Boris as PM.
