I have been reading with interest all the threads on this board. Am I the only who cannot believe the tone, content and the sheer catastrophe thinking about this issue? Reading threads about stockpiling and falling out with family and friends over this strikes me as strange. Historically, there a many, many more events that have had a humanitarian impact on the world ... Brexit is not one of these! There may, or may not, be an economic impact of Brexit, but will people die? Get killed? Be oppressed? There needs to be some perspective here.

Re the subject of urgent medical supplies, the govt is setting up a new service to deliver urgent medicines and medical supplies.

www.gov.uk/government/news/new-service-to-deliver-urgent-medicines-and-medical-products-into-uk?utm_source=dfde55ea-8de0-4f41-955b-d3becae59dfd&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=govuk-notifications&utm_content=immediate

The contract notice has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union and potential bidders have until 21 August to submit proposals. The successful provider(s) are expected to be announced in September.

I really hope that will help all of us dependent on medicines.

Macca84 · 17/08/2019 11:20

Starting a thread like this, yet have no idea about NI? I agree with PP that your ignorance shown here is fucking disgraceful.

namechange34 · 17/08/2019 11:21

All pharma companies have been instructed (for the second time) to stockpile 6 weeks of goods within the uk. Govt have largely pushed the problem back onto private firms - and are reliant on trusting them.

Macca84 · 17/08/2019 11:23

@CrunchyCarrot hopefully! Though if tenders are due on 21/08, they'll have to work a bloody miracle to get this awarded and standstill period completed prior to 31st Oct. If any of the unsuccessful bidders challenge the contract award decision, then it can be delayed by months.

At the same time tax revenues have declined considerably (see city of london) and will continue to do so.

Not according to this;

26 April 2019 HMRC’s multi-billion tax ‘bonanza’ sets new record
Personal tax revenue hits over £620bn–up £29bn in a year

www.independent.co.uk/money/spend-save/taxman-income-tax-capital-gains-stamp-duty-landlords-sugar-tax-hmrc-a8886996.html

And this;
July 2019 Britain’s contribution to the EU has shot up by £2.6 billion in the past 12 months, new Treasury figures show, as the UK’s growing economy was used to prop up Brussels’ budget.

"An “eye-popping” £15.5 billion was sent across the Channel in the year ending March 31, compared with £12.9 billion the year before - an increase of 20 per cent."

"The extra money would be enough to put 50,000 more police officers on the streets or fund 81,000 social care beds."

"Brexiteers said the increase was yet more evidence that Britain must leave the EU as soon as possible to stop taxpayers’ money “pouring into bottomless EU coffers”."

Diabetes UK 30 Jul 2019 What are the insulin companies doing?

"Novo Nordisk and Sanofi, two of the three main manufacturers of insulin, have said they will have at least 16 weeks of stocks in the UK so they will have time to resolve any problems that could occur at the border.They are also working on alternative routes into the country– either by ferry or in the air. Lilly have told us they have similar plans."

"We have recently written again to the three main insulin manufacturers–Lilly, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi – to ensure their contingencies are still in place."

"We can confirm now that these safeguards are still in place, and the manufacturers have gone beyond the recommendations made by the Government."

@Clavinova has to fit us into her busy schedule of shopping at Waitrose or local farm shops. Obviously she also has to go to the outfitters for her children's private school uniform. Just your average poster, apparently.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/08/2019 11:46

Yes, Macca84, it's by far not a done deal yet, and with an eye-wateringly short time left to go.

bellinisurge · 17/08/2019 11:52

Does anyone in your family have diabetes? Based on current performance, would you be happy with "don't worry, we have 16 weeks to sort it out and it'll be fiiiiiine"?

Does that invalidate her opinions? In that case I will continue to ignore the opinions of prominent remainers like Dominic Grieve, Ken Clarke, Heseltine and Gina Miller. I'm pretty sure private education features in their lives.

Veryveryverylate · 17/08/2019 11:58

I'm a type 1 diabetic, there is a chance my medicen might not get in for a while. Can you show me hard evidence that insulin will be delivered/ available as it is now? Do I have your permission to be worried about where I would get insulin from? You can't stock pile them for long as they expire, they need to be kept in a fridge. How long would the queue to get into Britain be and can lorries or planes be? Will medicen that require refrigeration be fast tracked so they don't get held in improper storage areas. If I run low on insulin I know I will need to stop eating to ration my insulin. Other people need large amount of insulin to function, I worry more about them as their life will more likely be in danger of dka. And dka can be fatal. So yes, I do worry about possible starvation (to avoid high sugar that eating causes without insulin) and death (caused by very high sugar for a prolonged time). Or doing the alternative which is buy drugs from doggy places as they would be the only feasible alternative.

Parker231 · 17/08/2019 12:00

What has Waitrose and private education have to do with Brexit concerns? I use both but have worries about post Brexit.

Oranginna · 17/08/2019 12:00

@Clavinova
How do you stay so polite and good-humoured when goaded by personal attacks and name-calling? It's very impressive!

bellinisurge · 17/08/2019 12:02

@Oranginna it doesn't invalidate her opinion but I think it's important to know that she is just another comfortably off person who is telling people less financially comfortable than she is that it will be fiiiiiine. Trusting people who think they know better and want you to take all the risks is what got us into this mess.

Oranginna · 17/08/2019 12:15

Really? Looks to me like she has a different view of Brexit to you, so you think that gives you carte blanche to be nasty and personal in your attacks. There's a lot of that on these boards.

Clavinova · 17/08/2019 12:17

bellinisurge

Oh yes, you think that middle class people in the South East of England are "moneyed and priviledged" and shouldn't have a say in Brexit if they voted 'leave'.

Do you regard two secondary school teachers working in outer London "moneyed and privileged" if they both earn £40,000 pa and send their dcs to private schools? I know several 'teacher' families in this situation paying full fees. Are teachers "moneyed and privileged"? Nurses and police officers? Taxi drivers? Several families with those occupations in dcs' private school.

You didn't bat an eyelid when the remain poster said she had taken a test drive in a £70,000 electric car a few days ago - how about the remain poster who said she was married to a London hospital doctor/consultant? It's ok to be middle class as long as you voted remain?

Clavinova · 17/08/2019 12:18

SistemaAddict · 17/08/2019 12:19

Some of us suspect Clav is a droid. It would explain the ability to copy and paste to fit her argument and the lack of critical analysis. We are quite fond of her as she helps the remainer arguments and this benefits fence sitting lurkers to prepare for no deal.
