Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 16:15

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Somebody else to blame when this all goes tits up, which I suspect it will.

Which is why JS is being naive by being so swift off the block.... Far better to say you’ll consider it, and lets others (moderate Tories or Labour independents) be the ones who say that couldn’t countenance Corbyn.

MrPan · 15/08/2019 08:10

Remainers are at acute risk of 'not having a plan', a mockery that that we/they have battered brexiters for years. Quite why they all think they have to wait until next Parl session to sort it out is absurd.
None of the party leaders will be acceptable to a HoC majority, that's just an enduring fact. So it would have to be a figure who supports an exit of some flavour, rather than remain and revoke.

Hoooo · 15/08/2019 08:11

Shame so many of the stupid bastards voted leave then, eh?

Ffs.

Cornwall, grimsby and now farmers all want "special status" or another referendum because "project fear" turns out to be actual fact.

Makes me so fucking angry.

Never mind all those on life saving meds, all the scientists and academics and companies that have left the uk....all they care about is themselves.

Venal fuckers.

bellinisurge · 15/08/2019 08:11

That PM twat using the phrase "collaborators" might be enough to tip me to support (or at least not immediately reject) Corbyn the other twat's suggestion.
In the same way as I would rather be kneecapped than shot in the head. Apologies for the colourful metaphor.

Link to the best calling out of Brexit lies I have heard to date on the BBC (Farming Today link I mentioned upthread)
Do listen!

If they can get some support from Conservatives, as well as the SNP, Plaid and the Green and the LibDens should be in there too even with Corbyn in charge, on order to head off No Deal, imagine how much support the proposal would get if someone less toxic he weren't in charge! Shock

A temporary Government of National Unity - because that is what is being talked about in order to avoid a national crisis - is not about who is the Leader of whatever Party but who can best get the country (or rather, countries Wink) through the immediate crisis Confused He should get over himself Angry

While I'm on a rant Chukka Umuna should get a lesson in arithmetic, after claiming that the the LibDens were the largest pro-Remain party in the UK Confused.

AutumnCrow · 15/08/2019 08:18

Another problem with Jo Swinson is that she doesn't reply to people if she doesn't feel like it, including people who put her where she is now. So emails, letters, texts, tweets, even from former colleagues, all go unanswered. She doesn't even ask her office to reply on her behalf.

She ignores people trying to communicate with her. Not a good look. Not a helpful trait right now.

AnkleWarmersAndPixieBoots · 15/08/2019 08:20

Lots of farmers in my County supported 'Leave', the utter twats!

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 08:20

The problem is, if it genuinely comes down to working with Corbyn or no deal, then it's irresponsible to not work with him.

However, all the parties have to do is agree to talks and hopefully come up with something more palatable. By refusing to be pragmatic and even talking, the LDs are part of the problem, not the solution.

I've just emailed Jo Swinson to urge that they're actually pragmatic in trying to resolve the issue.

CrunchyCarrot · 15/08/2019 08:28

Anna Soubry @anna_soubry
^1/4 I am disappointed Jeremy Corbyn did not include me in his letter especially as there are five MP members of our party.

Is that five before or after Sarah Wollaston defected to the LibDems? Hmm

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 08:35

By being so quick to dismiss Corbyn's plan and saying they wouldn't support a vote of no confidence in Boris the Lib Dems will be accused of propping up the Tories again.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 08:51

If Anna Soubry's analysis is correct and it well may be then the Lib Dems instant dismissal of Corbyn's plan means he has outplayed them. They should have said they would look at his proposal, instead they have made themselves look intransigent and unreasonable.

Basilpots · 15/08/2019 08:57

Rupert Lowe he’s one of our lot in the Midlands. (MEP/Farmer interviewed in borns link.)

He is an arable farmer in the Cotswolds who is looking to turn his land into a multi million pound equestrian centre for racehorses. He is the one tasked with drawing up the farming/agriculture manifesto for BXP.

In the interest of balance I follow both him and my Green MEP on Twitter the difference in the work ethic for their constituents is breathtaking.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 15/08/2019 09:01

JS is like a teacher who has just been promoted to the position of Deputy Head in a very small primary school. Sadly she had the chance of more influence than that and it looks like she's blown it.

"Lib Dems can shut up and fuck off. If they want to stop no deal then they do whatever it takes and works with whoever offers"

Yep, pretzels summed it up for me.

Corbyn has now - finally ! - shown a realistic way to avoid No Deal
His unequivocal promise of a PV makes it an acceptable offer, imo, even with him as PM

He has also avoided sharing the future blame for No Deal
Any other party that is too ideological / up themselves to grab this last chance will share the blame with the Tories, once the country gets poorer

It would be safer however to pass the PV legislation before a GE

  • a future Tory govt might possibly let a PV happen if it has already been organised for a set date, whereas if they gain a majority after a GE they would not feel the need to call one themselves

Corbyn also needs to reach out to all MPs though, including ChangeUK, whom he clearly detests
He needs to grow up, if he wants MPs to trust him enough to let him be PM

If any party is genuinely worried about Corbyn as PM - not just posturing - should state that they will only offer confidence & support for sorting out Brexit,
but will not offer support on any other policies he might want to carry out

Looking at the actions a PM can take without Parliament:
... declaring war on another country - no, even his worst enemies can't really fear that

Swinson is an arrogant fool if she claims that Corbyn is worse than No Deal, or if she thinks LDems can leverage a different PM 🤦🏻‍♀️

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 15/08/2019 09:07

That PM twat using the phrase "collaborators" might be enough to tip me to support (or at least not immediately reject) Corbyn the other twat's suggestion

Collaborators really got to me too bellin I swear for these people we are actually at war with the EU.
Still wish Corbyn would fuck off though.

bellinisurge · 15/08/2019 09:11

Swinson should show some statespersonness and not rule it out in public (whatever she thinks in private or how it plays out in reality).
But let's be honest, it just plays into Johnson's hands by bringing Tory waiverers back into the fold. It is a very brave Tory (and there are some) who would say "A Corbyn premiership is better than No Deal - that's how bad No Deal is".

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 09:12

Swinson openly demanding a different PM makes it more likely Corbyn will feel humiliated and dig in his heels
Difficult for him to step aside now

If she'd instead said she was considering the offer, then there might have been a better chance,
say of convincing Corbyn that he should let someone else - an elder statesman MP who is retiring - suffer the wrath of the Lexiters

bellinisurge · 15/08/2019 09:13

thank you @borntobequiet , I listened to the Farming Today link.
About fucking time. I listen to FT a bit and there is still the whiff of fake balance on there giving airtime to nonsense in the alleged interests of balance.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 09:14

"Brave" Tories will be those retiring, or knowing they'll be deselected anyway

Corbyn is a bogeyman for many,
but they need to ask themselves what dangerous things he can actually do, that doesn't require the assent of Parliament

Peregrina · 15/08/2019 09:32

Another one here for Oakenbeach's plan.
All 'No Deal' people should come together now. Hold a conference somewhere in the next couple of weeks to thrash out what they can agree on.

TokyoSushi · 15/08/2019 09:36

Quite a lot of back pedalling from Sarah Wollaston on BBC breakfast this morning. Clearly thought Swindon was wrong to dismiss the plan do quickly and tried to argue that she had been taken out of context and was very willing to work cross party (just not with Corbyn) 🙄

TokyoSushi · 15/08/2019 09:37

*Swinson, obvs

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2019 09:41

Is that five before or after Sarah Wollaston defected to the LibDems?

Wollaston had already left Soubry's Independant Group(Change UK) in June to sit as an independant, independant. (Not to be confused with the Group that also split from the Tiggers called The Independants)

So no, not one of the 5.

The Independant Group/Change UK are currently:
Anna Soubry (Con), Chris Leslie (Lab), Anne Coffey (Lab), Mike Gapes (Lab) and Joan Ryan (Lab) (All resigned their party)

The Independants are:
Luciana Berger (Lab), Gavin Shuker (Lab), Angela Smith (Lab), and Heidi Allen (Con) who were all former Tiggers who quit their original party along with John Woodcock (Lab) suspended then resigned

Former Tiggers who are now LDs are:
Chukka Umunna (Lab) and Sarah Wollaston (Con) who both resigned former parties

Other Independents are:
Frank Field - Birkenhead Social Justice Party
Jared O'Mara - Independant (Labour) resigned
Kelvin Hopkins - Independant (Labour) suspended
Charlie Elphicke - Independant (Conservative) suspended
Ivan Lewis - Independant (Labour) resigned
Stephen LLoyd -Independant (LD) resigned
Ian Austin - Independant (Labour) resigned
Chris Williamson - Independant (Labour) suspended
Nick Boles - Independant (Conservative) resigned

What do you mean you can't keep track???

(Yes I did look all this up!)
