Brexit

Do you judge people on how they voted?

Rock4please · 01/08/2019 07:55

Just that really. I used to have an open mind on meeting somebody new but, if I discover that they voted leave, I am not interested in furthering the relationship. Similarly, with Americans, I don’t want to associate with anyone who supports Trump.

Am I being unfair and narrow minded or do you judge new people in a similar way?

I find this all just amazing when so many of you think it's fine to discriminate against people in this way.
Nobody is giving jobs to Remainers instead of leavers. We can be friends with whoever we want. I'll just choose people who aren't dumb or racist enough.

You might have asked O.P. if people would stay friends with others of a different faith! Try Muslim for instance - now do you all see how ridiculous this is?
I wouldn't be friends with a Muslim fundamentalist. If they actively supported aspects of Islam that I considered to damage me or our society, then we couldn't be friends, no.

Peregrina · 02/08/2019 07:33

I find Christian Fundamentalists very hard work too, even though I am a practicing Christian myself.

bellinisurge · 02/08/2019 07:37

I don't see how steering clear of some gobshite whose views make me cringe means I am discriminating against them. I am depriving them of the undoubted magnificence of my friendship but I don't think they have a protected characteristic as a consequence.
FWIW, I have Leave voting family and colleagues and we rub along nicely by not talking about it.

TheElementsSong · 02/08/2019 07:37

Friendship, like sex, is not mandated by equal opportunity legislation. Namely, it's not discrimination.

Nevertheless, I do hope your opprobrium does extend to Leavers posting on this thread who have said that they've cut out Remainers or "lefties"?

Rock4please · 02/08/2019 08:38

I have friends from different faiths and how they practise their religion is their personal choice. Why would it make me view them in a negative way? But I don't like extremists of any group, and would not want to have a friendship with anyone who felt entitled to try to foist their views on me or others.

Brexit is not at all the same thing - although it seems to have cultish aspects. In its most extreme elements ie 'no deal', it is a group of racist fascists who are not only content but determined to wreck our country's economy and future. And all the ones I have met are racist although they inevitably commence their pro Brexit stance by saying 'I'm not racist but.....'

No, I don't want to mix with those people any more than I have to.

It’s all very childish isn’t it.

‘I’m not your friend anymore’ < sticks tongue out >

I suppose some people will take this extremely narrow minded view ( clearly, as this thread demonstrates ) but most of what’s posted online is just wind & piss so I doubt many of us will encounter this strange phenomenon.

Thankfully.

Quellium · 02/08/2019 08:58

No, you probably won't directly encounter it Tom, you'll just be quietly phased out. Or, just find that some don't pursue friendships with you. Either way, it probably won't be noticeable.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 02/08/2019 09:02

It's not childish, this is going to fuck many people over, predominantly the already poorest and most vulnerable, for years to come. I have close family and friends who will be and have already been negatively affected. So excuse me for feeling frustrated and yes, angry, with a large number of people who have caused this.

Quellium · 02/08/2019 09:22

Also, if you think you'll be thanked in a No Deal situation by your Remainer relatives and friends, you might want to give your head a wobble and brace yourself.

Looneytune253 · 02/08/2019 09:39

I voted leave and, if I do say so myself, I am a genuinely nice person and a great friend. I think it would be narrow minded to not speak to someone solely because of the way they voted. I voted leave for my own reasons and I still don't get the hysteria surrounding it. People love to paint the most negative picture of how things may turn out. Yes I know we're travelling into the unknown but it doesn't mean it will automatically be horrendous. It might just turn out ok. It's got to be better than the way we were heading to be fair!! But then I always have a positive head on and always see the positive side of life. I know that's not a common trait, quite rare in fact but I won't be dragged into hysteria of loads of stuff that probably won't happen.

daisypond · 02/08/2019 09:50

Yes, I do. It’s not the same as voting Conservative/Labour at all.

MrPan · 02/08/2019 09:52

How do you know it probably won't happen? Esp when the very people who said "it won't happen" are spending billions of £s of our money in an attempt to try to make it not happen.
And what IS happening is the tanking of the £, which will increase proces for us all, but the better of people will be able to deal wit hit.

Poorer people will be poorer and desparate. You voted for this. It's insane.

Quellium · 02/08/2019 09:55

"It can't get worse!". Of course it can. It already is.

Doubletrouble99 · 02/08/2019 09:59

The point I was trying to make is that few of the leave voters are racist extremists and few if any Tories care nothing for the poor yet so many posters on here have labelled us all as such. So my analogy of suggesting you would think twice if we were talking about Muslims still stands. None of us would want to be friends with fundamentalists of any persuasion but leavers and Tories have been tared with the same brush by so many on here.

BeardedMum · 02/08/2019 10:14

Hysteria? Is the Bank of England hysterical then?

KennDodd · 02/08/2019 10:28

@Rock4please
I'm sure you are a nice person Smile.
Look around you though, look at the people you're standing with, Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage, EDL, BNP, Britain First all huge supporters of Leave. What do you think it is that Brexit offers that appeals to them so much? This is what your vote is enabling. Most of my family voted Leave, they support the veiws of those listed above, they don't think they're racist, they just think they're right. Also on a personal level, I very nearly lost my job as a direct result of your vote, some of my colleagues did lose their jobs, do you think they have no right to be upset with you about this? You were told before the vote there would be job losses. The IRA is now also on the rise in NI and one young woman has already been murdered, now the timing might be completely coincidental but we were told that Brexit could reignite the troubles. Your vote has real consequences for real people .

LatteLove · 02/08/2019 10:30

I find this all just amazing when so many of you think it's fine to discriminate against people in this way.

People are allowed to choose who they want to be friends/associates with 🙄

jasjas1973 · 02/08/2019 10:31

Dominic Cummings thinks that Tory MPs don't care for either the poor or the NHS.

Given the support that Farage and BXP has got recently, its clear that Cummings is correct, also remember the successful Breaking point poster Farage used?
imho racism (dressed us as "concerns over immigration") is a big driver for brexit, not the only one and not all leavers are racist but its a majority and the polling shows this.

Just because you don't think this way, doesn't mean that many tories or leave voters share your opinions

Rock4please · 02/08/2019 10:43

@KennDodd - I have no idea why your post is aimed at me. I started this thread and I am totally anti-Brexit. I think you must have got me mixed up with another poster. I am pleased you think I am a nice person though! Grin

OP posts:
MargoLovebutter · 02/08/2019 10:47

In answer to the original question, yes, I do. In the same way that it would if they said they were anti-abortion or against freedom of speech etc. We all judge people by how they live their lives and their opinions - so it would be really odd not to judge someone for their views on Brexit. It doesn't mean that I can't be friends with Leavers or have a conversation with them, but it does mean I secretly think they are barking bonkers! Grin

KennDodd · 02/08/2019 10:58

Rock4please sorry, it was meant for @Looneytune253

QueenOfIce · 02/08/2019 11:14

Yabu, it's not a reflection of their core values it's a reflection of you and the kind of person you are.

The UK country is already polarised, the last thing it needs is more division. Perhaps the people you meet who voted leave did so for reasons other than the hysterical tripe shoved down our necks on here, perhaps they wished they'd voted remain. It really isn't anyone's place to judge another regardless.

Bumper1969 · 02/08/2019 12:01

I'm astounded at the amount of vile bigotry on this thread. Calling all leave voters thick and racist. Have people really not heard of dialogue, democracy, discussion, others view points, polarisation, do you really think shutting down discussion like that is useful, intelligent or productive?

And I voted remain.

TheElementsSong · 02/08/2019 12:10

I do hope your opprobrium does extend to Leavers posting on this thread who have said that they've cut out Remainers or "lefties"?

Janista · 02/08/2019 12:12

Pure hysteria from remainers.
