Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

Clav likes to come on all the brexit threads and copy and paste ad infinitum. I've never read anything convincing from her yet but bless, she never gives up.

Yes, and you’ve helpfully found me a quote suggesting that a sustained cost increase will be passed on to consumers. As the rest of us already thought. I think the term is “own goal”?

"ripple through" is hardly a sudden price hike.

I think stockpiling tuna, toilet rolls and sweets (op) is unnecessary because retailers are stockpiling for you - which may also be unnecessary. If you think there will be a serious shortage of food and people looking to 'steal your stash' - then you are a bit bonkers.

Socksontheradiator · 07/08/2019 16:12

This is not the stealing your stash thread. My concern is that, if you are wrong and there are shortages, anybody who you may have persuaded out of stockpiling will be adding to frenzied panic buying later.

TheElementsSong · 07/08/2019 16:18

"ripple through" is hardly a sudden price hike.

Goalpost shifting alert. Now it's only "sudden" events that are scaremongering fake news, just like now it's only "certain" items that may be stockpiled.

jasjas1973 · 07/08/2019 16:29

FFS Does anyone really think Govt's, importers and retailers are spending all this time and money for no fucking reason?

Storage is finite, esp leading up to xmas, alternative suppliers and any FTA will be a long time coming.

CrunchyCarrot · 07/08/2019 16:36

Retailers already stockpile to warehouse capacity in preparation for Xmas so to stockpile further for Brexit will be beyond their capacity, unless they get extra warehouse space.

TheElementsSong · 07/08/2019 16:40

to stockpile further for Brexit will be beyond their capacity, unless they get extra warehouse space

It's that goalpost shifting again.

From "stockpiling is baaaaaaaad scaremongering/hysteria/panic, there is no chance of shortages or price rises", to "why, obviously stockpiling is sensible/desirable/patriotic, as long as it's certain people/companies stockpiling certain things."

bellinisurge · 07/08/2019 17:24

@Clavinova , don't know about you but I don't trust people to do the buffer of food building for me. They tend to bump the prices up if things get scarce (or there is a perception that it is scarce or it is very sunny or it is a bit cold or whatever market force is in play). It's called capitalism . Where the only person to rely on in an uncertain market is yourself.
But you have taken the pledge not to build a buffer of food in your cupboards. Weirdly, no other Brexiteer on here seems willing to do so. Wonder why that is Hmm

TheBigBallOfOil · 07/08/2019 17:43

Anyone listening to Justin king on R4 now?
Who do I regard as credible ... him or Clavinova ... ooh that’s a toughie

TheElementsSong · 07/08/2019 17:48

They tend to bump the prices up

Ah, but apparently that's not going to happen because Reasons.

howwudufeel · 07/08/2019 17:49

I am listening to R4.

SistemaAddict · 07/08/2019 18:00

I love my stash although less so now there's no treats in it. It's brings me equal amounts of comfort and anxiety. It's a strange thing.

AutumnCrow · 07/08/2019 18:40

Is Clavvy the same poster as claig? Asking for a friend.

MigorRortis · 07/08/2019 18:42

Just registered to let @bellinisurge & others know that I’m a Brexiteer & have ‘taken the pledge’ to not stockpile✌️🇬🇧

bellinisurge · 07/08/2019 18:49

Oo, we have a second pledge. Thanks @MigorRortis . At least you have the guts to say it.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/08/2019 18:52

is there a proper pledge? thats brilliant.

mind you, before march, i remember there was a brexiteer who was aghast at anyone buying in extra tins despite having 'an outhouse' - as you do - with approx yrs worth of supplies. Grin

MigorRortis · 07/08/2019 18:55

No worries😃 @bellinisurge
Found you all through an article in the Daily Mail✌️🇬🇧

MigorRortis · 07/08/2019 19:01

I can assure you @Helmetbymidnight that I don’t have an outhouse. I’m common by Mumsnet standards & only have a blow up hot tub in the back garden✌️🇬🇧

SistemaAddict · 07/08/2019 19:09

Wasn't there a lawyer who had an outhouse fully loaded?

Helmetbymidnight · 07/08/2019 19:10

excellent Grin and presumably the hot tub and all the cleaning chemicals are made in the uk.

party round yours then!

MigorRortis · 07/08/2019 19:19

I’m sure we’ll be fine on cleaning chemicals with all the pennies I save on olives in the sparkling English wine✌️🇬🇧

MigorRortis · 07/08/2019 19:22

Party round mine 31/10/19 11pm🎉
You’re more than welcome✌️🇬🇧

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 07/08/2019 20:04

Isn't that how retailers such as Amazon/Aldi/Lidl do so well - with tight profit margins? Works for some.

Amazon does well by imposing punishing terms on its suppliers. It doesn’t have the same sort of overheads as a high street food retailer. Jeff Bezos didn’t become the richest person in modern history by not worrying about his profit margin.

jasjas1973 · 07/08/2019 20:14

Is Clavvy the same poster as claig? Asking for a friend

I wondered that too, just another "so called" brexitier who cannot back up their statements.. do these people live under a bridge?

Socksontheradiator · 07/08/2019 20:23

Brilliant @MigorRortis, another pledge!

But what do your pledge-free cupboards look like? I only ask in the interests of transparency, as I have a friend who thinks 'all this stockpiling nonsense is education's and she 'won't do it'.

She has a double sided fridge freezer in her kitchen (the American sort) and a large chest freezer in the garage. Both are always full. But she's not stockpiling.

Another friend is in a studio flat. She is stockpiling because she is 'very worried '. 12 loo rolls under the bed and a plastic container like you might keep kid's toys in, in the lounge area (no room in tiny kitchen) It contains a few cans and a bit of long life milk and orange juice.
