Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

Apparently not @Jars123

BlackeyedGruesome · 04/08/2019 00:51

Perhaps one could attach artificial horns to the foreheads of the lambs and we could have a whole lot of little woolly unicorns wandering across the land as mini mowing machines.

Jars123 · 04/08/2019 01:37

Apparently not

I wish that were true - I spent the first 4 months of this year up to my eyeballs moving a business out of the UK because they would not be able to operate outside of the EU. Pharmaceutical company - currently deciding if the UK market is worth maintaining outside of the EU Anyone need any medicines? Oh dear - that's a pity.

Parker231 · 06/08/2019 16:32

Doesn’t look encouraging-

The UK's food supply would face "unprecedented" levels of disruption in the aftermath of a no-deal Brexit, food policy academic Tim Lang warned on Monday, adding that the UK would face an acute shortage of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Socksontheradiator · 06/08/2019 17:21

I read that too. I also accidentally (well couldn't help myself!) read an article in my boss's daily mail yesterday. The did a run down of 28 points about what no deal would be like. Everything is sorted apparently. Certainly at first glance. On closer inspection it's easy to see fairly vague wording which makes it look as though everything has been arranged.
It's no wonder the country is so divided.

This is not new news - Prof. Lang has been warning of this for at least the last 3 years, but of course, he's an expert so has been ignored by the government.

Meanwhile - Domino's Pizza has spent £7 million stockpiling toppings and tomato sauce to prepare for a no-deal Brexit

Parker231 · 06/08/2019 17:35

I’ve now started realising how little of the food we eat every day comes from or is solely produced in the UK.

🤔 So are Domino's traitorous scaremongering hysterical remoaners or totally sensible reasonable patriots? 🤔

BlackeyedGruesome · 06/08/2019 17:51

Pizza is Italian... therefore Forrin, therefore automatically traitors....to some anyway. Everyone else thinks sensible.

Interesting vox pops on PM just now... Proving elements will switch to good old British carrots if the forrin tomatoes are turning to mush in the customs queue.

I will swap to tins or frozen... They say.

Yep, you and everyone else.

noodlenosefraggle · 06/08/2019 18:56

Can you imagine-no food in the shops, so we'll just order Domino's Grin

CrunchyCarrot · 06/08/2019 20:18

Domino's are clearly causing mass panic and fear with such an unnecessary strategy. Hmm

SistemaAddict · 06/08/2019 20:34

Dabber poised for the obesity crisis comment from someone Grin

SalrycLuxx · 07/08/2019 07:51

The supply of Domino’s will be uninterrupted. Yes!!!

But a bit of a shortage will of course be excellent news as it may counteract the obesity crisis...Wink

I’m sure it’s all going to be fine and the government totally have this under control. Or not.

Even better - Zizzi have switched to Welsh mozzarella!

Although your link also says;

"One industry member said that a year ago:"Food was part of the conversation in terms of what to prioritise in a no-deal Brexit"."

"That has changed with the government now privately acknowledging there may be an impact on price and choice rather than overall availability."

AutumnCrow · 07/08/2019 10:27

Price does equal availability to the millions of children and poorer pensioners living in poverty in the UK - or do they not matter?

The government is inherently untrustworthy on Brexit anyway, I've observed.

Havanananana · 07/08/2019 10:29

This is another way of saying that food will be rationed, but instead of using ration books, it will be rationed by price.

probstimeforanewname · 07/08/2019 10:30

the UK would face an acute shortage of fresh fruit and vegetables

hence why I have focused my stash on tinned fruit. The problem is, it tastes quite good and I keep eating my stash...

TitsalinaBumSquash · 07/08/2019 10:34

Apart from aforementioned shortages - some people are already struggling to feed their families every week (empty food banks anyone) its sensible to try and squirrel away an extra tin of beans or similar in preparation for food prices going sky high.

Clavinova · 07/08/2019 10:34

It probably means there will only be 5 varieties of olives to choose from - instead of 7.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/08/2019 10:40

Let's hope so.

Havanananana · 07/08/2019 10:42

It probably means there will only be 5 varieties of olives to choose from - instead of 7

That might be an issue for you.

For others on fixed incomes or reliant on welfare payments, if they can barely manage to feed themselves and their families at current prices, they'll be in real trouble if prices rise by even a small amount. 14 million people live in relative poverty in the UK - supposedly the fifth largest economy in the world. What a disgrace.

Clavinova · 07/08/2019 10:44

According to this BBC report (March 2019) - the proposed temporary tariff regime reduces tariffs to zero for many products, including eggs, cereals, fruit and vegetables.

e.g.^"The plans would see the current tariff rate on oranges cut from 16% to 0%, the rate for onions down from 9.6% to 0% and the tariff on imported televisions down from 14% to 0%."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47551266

Wholesalers/retailers may not pass on any price rises in any case.

Clavinova · 07/08/2019 10:46

I hate olives.

AutumnCrow · 07/08/2019 10:47

I thought we didn't need to import anything, Clavikins? Make your mind up, love.
