I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

so we should all lower our veg eating expectations?
Of course not - but we might eat what we buy.

@Clavinova , any veg I don't eat goes into my compost bin. And you?

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 15:59

So can't wait for the leaflet @flouncyfanny . It'll help trap spiders or shovel the odd slug out .

noodlenosefraggle · 01/08/2019 15:59

We could all go keto and stuff our faces with British lamb and pork which will be cheap as chips. We can solve the obesity crisis apparently that way too. I'm sure the award winning farmers won't go out of business that way, despite losing their subsidies/largest market.

Mmm lamb chops and chips every day. Bring on no deal Grin If only those bloody kids of mine hadn't gone vegetarian

Clavinova · 01/08/2019 16:16

if there's not enough spuds
Spuds are good - might have to make your own chips though;

"Despite the relatively lower production volumes, the UK is self-sufficient in seed potatoes and therefore exports are important in order to avoid a large surplus. The UK is a net importer of total processed potato products."

noodlenosefraggle · 01/08/2019 16:29

Potatoes and lamb! Hopefully sausages too. I always see loads of pigs in fields where I live. It will be olden ye olden days! I have some vitamin c tablets no one eats in my house to stave off the scurvy!

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 16:30

@Clavinova apart from being the only Brexiteer brave enough to make the pledge , what are you trying to achieve here?

Galleyfm · 01/08/2019 16:42

Does anyone know please when we can expect the government advice to drop?

AutumnCrow · 01/08/2019 16:52

I think the Government's glossy 'shit yourselves' leaflets will drop in late August, in the dead zone of political time and in the mire of the end of the summer hols.

As for walking to the farm shop, one of those government reports did point out that people would still be able to buy good quality, locally produced food - if they had access to it/could afford it. I could always drive to Waitrose instead.

Well nobody thinks we are going to starve. We think there will be disruption, potential difficulties in getting hold of the things we want/need, issues with fresh produce, limited choice and significantly increased prices resulting in hardship for many. Of course if you are one of the relative few in the position of having a lot of money and who doesn't care about others then you can of course pay the significantly increased prices for the limited available produce at your local farm shop or waitrose whilst not giving a shit about those who can't afford to do the same and are already struggling Hmm.

Really astonishes me when people are seemingly pleased to portray themselves as complete knobs. I could afford to pay ten times what I currently pay for food but I'm not so selfish that I'm only thinking about myself.

Then talk of leaflets reminds me of the protect and survive leaflets.

And if anyone dares say ‘and look that was fine’ I’ll give them a link to the story of how it wasn’t.
It’s like the people who say ‘I never wore a seatbelt when I was a kid and I’m fine’. Well that’s because all the kids who died aren’t here to tell us.

Why do I have a stash? Basically, it boils done to a few things.

  1. I grew up in a house where there was always a well-stocked pantry. It is my 'normal', not having a store would be perculiar.
  1. Personal experience - I was living near Warrington when the Ellesmere Port protests kicked off in 2000 (I think it was 2000). The shelves of the supermarkets stripped bare of essentials like milk and bread, people getting angry, and I remember the manager of one of the supermarkets telling the local radio that a woman had spent nearly £4,000 in one shop. Now that's panic buying, not putting an extra bag of rice, a can of something and a bar of chocolate in your weekly shop. I lived in a very small village in Oxfordshire that was, at least once a year, cut off by flood water or snow. The longest we were cut off for was 7 days. It was regarded as odd not having enough supplies to last. If you stock for 7 days, you might as well stock for 14.
  1. Insurance - we have insurance for everything and food insurance has the bonus of premiums you can eat. I don't want my house to burn down but I have insurance just in case it does. My car is insured, but I don't want it to be stolen. I have food insurance against shortages, distruptions and bad weather, and I definitely don't want there to be shortages because of Brexit. But if there is, I won't be part of the problem.

Applying Pascal's Wager to problems helps.

I live near ish to the town that has just been evacuated because the dam is bust. While the reservoir near us has route away from our house that water would naturally take, dh has suddenly got a little bit more interested in my emergency bag.
I even have gear to move the cat if I have too.
Just sayin ' , it does no harm to have a bit of a plan for the unexpected. And then if it doesn't happen, meh, no harm done.

Cackleweb · 01/08/2019 17:50

Billinisurge

Get the bug out bag next to the door. Get the cat basket out of storage. Sacrifice the husband for the cat.

Good luck and I really hope that dam holds.
