Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

Was it going to be conciliatory or combative. I think we have our answer. This is Vote Leave coming to finish the journey. Johnson knows he must deliver if he wants to survive. Campaign time. #BorisJohnsonPM

@joannacuppa (oh clever name I just got it as I typed!) Thanks for telling me I was worried he got banned like TiP.

ImNotYourGranny · 24/07/2019 16:28

The country is well and truly fucked.

prettybird · 24/07/2019 16:29

Any extra spending on the NHS, education and policing will help Scotland via the Barnett Formula (grasping at straws of silver lining Hmm) unless they are funded by NI increases (reserved to WM) and got through with tax cuts - so a double whammy for Scots (whose higher rate tax payers already pay more - most of whom don't mind) Sad

Hazardtired · 24/07/2019 16:30

red good description two different languages at this point. Leavers were won over by the leave campaign more of the same style is likely to go down well with them so not suprised about the split reaction...remainers weren't talked round the first time and at this point we're more informed so even less likely to go for whatever hot mess Johnson is.

Songsofexperience · 24/07/2019 16:31

Now I think the attention- and pressure- of remainers should shift to Labour and finally getting a proper opposition leader. That's as crucial as it gets.
Corbyn is manna from heaven for this government. When is that going to sink in??

prettybird · 24/07/2019 16:34

Was May trying to spike BJ's guns when she suggested to Corbyn that Labour should also change its leadership? Grin

MsAdventures · 24/07/2019 16:34

I’ve spent last weekend in Germany. It was lovely apart from being asked to “explain Brexit” by everyone I encountered...

These are this week’s title pages of Der Spiegel and Stern:

(Apologies if this has been posted before - I dip in and out of the Westminstenders threads as I vacillate between morbid fascination and wanting to stick my head very firmly in the sand)

I noticed the dyson fan in the Queens room and her handbag does look so odd on her arm ! Is she scared of muggers?
( I know it's her thing)
13 PMs she's seen come and go.

Hasenstein · 24/07/2019 16:40

MsAdventures

I spent the last week in Germany, too, and also read the article in Stern about their UK correspondent and family leaving, despite having planned to stay here for ever. One of the saddest things I've ever read.

pamperramper · 24/07/2019 16:41

I like the way the Stern newspaper has Boris as the opposite of Churchill.

Coppersulphate · 24/07/2019 16:46

That was an excellent opening speech. I believe he has the backing of most of the country who want him to,deliver on Brexit.
I also think the plans for the police, education and the NHS will go down very well.
If he calls a GE the Tories will will a landslide.
I hope he does it while Corbyn is still leader of the hard left bonkers party

TokyoSushi · 24/07/2019 16:48

Penny Mordaunt out if cabinet, says she's heading to the back benches.

TokyoSushi · 24/07/2019 16:49

I wonder if this is going to be even bumper than we thought, if that were even possible.. 🔥

SwedishEdith · 24/07/2019 16:52

The bots are back.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/07/2019 16:53

@Coppersulphate, I think you're as deluded as some of the politicians who are running the country.

jasjas1973 · 24/07/2019 16:53

I also think the plans for the police, education and the NHS will go down very well

Where does the money come for all these commitments? have they been costed? he also wanted to cut upper rate tax too didn't he or has he forgotten that one?

When you say "most of the country want brexit" on what figures are you basing that statement on?

SistemaAddict · 24/07/2019 16:56

Bloody school run made me miss all the action 😩

prettybird · 24/07/2019 16:56

I believe he has the backing of most of the country who want him to,deliver on Brexit.

So that's a minority then Hmm

NoWordForFluffy · 24/07/2019 16:59

So that's a minority then.

We're back to cracking leaver maths!

dreichhighlands · 24/07/2019 17:01

I agree with copper that the conservatives will do much better in a GE if Corbyn is still leading the Labour Party.
I also agree that significantly increasingly spending on public services will be a popular move.
But the money for this has to come from somewhere and going into Brexit we will have less than ever.
It is also a massive piece of misdirection as it is Brexit that needs sorting and the rest is still organising deckchairs on the Titantic.
Both Corbyn and Johnson are guilty of this.
Brexit still has to be dealt with.

All you moaning Minnie’s or negative Nigel’s, how is this country every going to move forward, why not get behind our new government, It’s all well and good trying to Stop Brexit , But you are all a weight holding it back, It’s no good morning and saying it’s going to be shit, If It ends up shit we will all be in together, it will not make it any better moaning. Get behind Boris, A General Election will make no difference now, will will still be in the same situation.
I agree it’s best to leave with a deal, but we cannot keep kicking the can down the road.
