Brexit

Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

SistemaAddict · 23/07/2019 18:47

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

With a newborn I’d be considering adding colief, infacol and gripe water to that list, in case of colic.

AutumnCrow · 29/07/2019 18:34

Btw I think a lot of things will be available - but possibly will be very expensive.

'Stealth' price rises are already happening and have been for a while.

PhantomErik · 29/07/2019 19:21

I'm making a list of basics & will buy them every month so with August's pay I'll buy another 6kg rice & 10 boxes of curry sauce powder & a 16kg sack of dog food.

September pay day I'll stock up on cat food & frozen products like Quorn/soya sausages etc.

I've got a fair few tins of veg left so will add 1-2 each time I shop.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 20:33

Infacol...could not remember what it was called.

Breast cream... Hand cream too.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/07/2019 20:38

Nipple shields, breast pads and maternity pads. I preferred night pads as they were less like wearing a house brick against a bruised, infected, cut undercarriage.

Arnica for bruising and the cool gel pads for your undercarriage, plus the special u shaped cushions to sit on a a feeding pillow various pillows for late pregnancy.

Iambuffy · 29/07/2019 20:40

I'm buying nice soaps, perfume, books...

I don't think there will be money for treats in the new Albion...

All is well. No questions! Hail the blonde leader!

Rhubarbisevil · 30/07/2019 06:49

Placemarking to remind myself to buy a camping stove next time I’m in town.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 09:16

@Iambuffy , treats including nice smelling stuff are a good idea

Cloudtree · 30/07/2019 09:32

Mine is depleted in certain areas and needs restocking. The prices rises are everywhere. I remember the prices on items we use frequently and lots of things have gone up by circa 20%.

Our biggest issue is that we now have a new family member (puppy) who is raw fed. Fine at the moment but its using up lots of my freezer space and so I might need to switch him to mixed feeding (since dry food would be much easier to store).

My kitchen garden has been dreadful this year since Ive been so busy and haven't been able to get out there. Had a bumper crop of strawberries but after the first four or five collections the wasps got to them, the birds ate most of the blackcurrants before I got to them, the courgettes have done very little which is bizarre since we had a glut last year, tomatoes are very late and my leeks have all bolted. Shallots and potatoes were good though.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/07/2019 09:41

My leeks are bolting too, Cloudtree. I'm filling the bloody freezer with them!

Also Brexit bingo:

  • that we are actually causing panic by carefully stocking up a bit
  • that gradual prep = crazed panic buying
Cloudtree · 30/07/2019 12:44

My new stash find is falafel mix. The Al'Fez Moroccan Spiced one is delicious

MotherWol · 30/07/2019 13:51

Mine's seriously depleted - some went to the food bank, some got used. Planning to start restocking this weekend; I think it could be a mistake to wait until later in the summer, as if the government does start a campaign to warn people about No Deal there may well be panic buying.

@Bellasblankexpression re: buddha bowls, tahini keeps well, and bottled lemon juice, so you can make shelf-stable meals tastier with a nice dressing.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 13:56

God bless @TheElementsSong !

Another one for your bingo haul

Why do people here have a stash for Brexit? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eureferendumm2016/3651759-Why-do-people-here-have-a-stash-for-Brexit

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 14:20

According that thread, we need to add low IQ to the bingo list

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 14:37

Even my normally sensible DH said yesterday that we'll 'just' get meat from local farm shop.
I did a eye roll and an ever-so-patient explanation for him.
I heard toughen up at work this morning.
Brexit bingo is playing out well in my RL this week.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 30/07/2019 19:53

Good evening everybody. I apologise if this has been asked or discussed before, could anyone advise regarding tinned meat and chicken? I can buy cases of corned beef at Costco and my partner pronounced the Princes or the like, stewed steak in gravy, good. I will try him with a fray bentos pie also. But I was wondering about tinned chunky chicken in sauce, chicken curry etc. Has anyone found some they enjoyed? Marks and Spencer perhaps?

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 30/07/2019 20:24

Marks and spencer tinned
Chicken curry is fine. We take it camping

Cloudtree · 30/07/2019 20:27

chicken in white sauce is generally fine. A tin of that, a tin of peas, a tin of carrots and a pack of pastry mix and you have yourself a far better pie than fray bentos (with a far better chance of some meat in it)

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 20:27

Jack Monroe suggests getting a chicken in sauce type thing in a tin and washing the sauce off (save for later) and there's your chicken.

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 20:35

Bugger MN just ate my post. We haven't tried tinned chicken yet but I do have the book bellini mentioned and due to that, I tried rinsing tinned beef stew as I hate the sauce, and added to my slow cooker for a tasty casserole with loads of veg, herbs and stock, and a slug of red wine. Tender and tasty. Jack Monroe's taught this reluctant cook that its perfectly possible to doctor tinned food and render it very edible :)

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 20:37

Tin Can Cook, sorry. Excellent book.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 30/07/2019 21:07

Excellent advice, thank you all. I have been to Sainsbury’s and purchased a tin of chicken in white sauce and a small tin of Sainsbury’s ham. Carbonara or chicken and ham pie. Also a small in of tongue, not everyone’s favourite but I like packet tongue so will give it a go. The curry sounds good, and the casserole advice.
I will try Marks tomorow.
